  1. I feel like we're at the point with the Twins of the 2012-13 Minnesota Wild. For the Twins, after 4 straight 90 loss seasons, finally sees the light at the end of the tunnel into contention. I do not agree with the "buy now" group when it comes to trade deadline deals. I would much rather have a 5 year window of being contenders over a 1 year let's win right now mentality. Yes, a lot can happen where our prospects get hurt, never develop, etc. But we've done a good job of filling the cupboards in the Minors with future options and fill ins on the MLB club. If anything I am more on the "selling" side at the trade deadline for this season, but not blockbuster type deals (a bullpen arm, Pinto, a bench player is what I'm thinking) After this season, we reassess what we have, what we need, and be more aggressive, whether through trades or free agency, in order to remain playoff contenders for not just the short term, but long term.
  2. I just took a quick glance at the 1998 draft results, as Ryan Mills was brought up in the article. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but there were a couple of interesting names taken after #6... Carlos Pena went #10 to the Rangers, our old friend Adam Everett went #12 to the Red Sox, Jeff Weaver #14 to the Tigers, and C.C. Sabathia #20 to the Indians just to name a couple.
  3. I would have never guessed in a million years that Mike F'in Pelfrey would have put together this kind of streak pitching for the Twins. Since he's been doing so well, does that mean he will remain on the team for the remainder of the season? Or do you think he will still be shopped around in July?
  4. Nice little cheap shot from TR that we didn't have a true ace during most of the playoff years. How quickly he forgot about Johan Santana.. I'm not overly pleased with TR's performance since his official return to GM. However I will keep quiet as long as we're competitive and contending like we are now. He's made clear expectations that he wants this team to be in the post season. And if that doesn't happen, he should be on the hot seat to lose his job.
  5. Seems like relief pitchers in general are so variable year in and year out. I'm glad we found Boyer on a good year. Not sure if he's a consistent sub 3 ERA guy year in and year out, but for the 2015 season he's a good asset to have in our bullpen.
  6. I stand corrected. 4 years. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/1172/cole-hamels
  7. Definitely if they want to have any of our prospects. If the big dogs come into play like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc. they won't even flinch at the $22.5 million price tag for Hamels.
  8. As much as I want to see Nolasco off of this team, that is way too steep of a price for Hamels. Having a guy like him and Mauer making a combined $46 million for the next 5 years won't work out well for the Twins when Buxton and the other young prospects are due for a pay day.
  9. I agree, we are a year too early on the Plouffe trade conversation. However, I am not on board with discussing long-term extension with him either. 2016 will be an interesting season to see where Sano winds up fitting into the lineup.
  10. Being a fly ball pitcher on a team (A's) with the biggest outfield & foul ball territory in baseball.
  11. There's no need to create a log jam for the future. Offer him arbitration this offseason, and I'll be excited to see Plouffe vs. Sano at 3rd base in Ft. Meyers next March.
  12. I'm very excited to see when the Twins will bring up Berrios. I don't think I'm any different than other Twins fans when I thought Meyer was the consensus #1 SP in the farm system. Berrios has continued to develop quickly, and from the sounds of it, might be the first true ace of the rotation we've had since Johan.
  13. We have 3 starters in the rotation that I am confident with - Gibson, May, and never thought I would say this.... Mike Pelfrey. The synopsis on Hughes is convincing that he can turn it around, but overall I think it's going to be a down year for him compared to last year. With Nolasco... The Twins should throw him a party if he makes it through 6 innings.
  14. Much like others have mentioned, I am not sold on Arcia as an OF option in the future. Ideally I'd like to see Rosario-Buxton-Hicks for the future. Arcia seems to be too much of a head case this early in his career. The bat potential is there, but the guy shows no desire to be a serviceable OF. He could be a DH option, but we also have Vargas, Hunter, and Escobar who can fill that role. I don't know if Arcia just grew a big ego from hitting 20+ bombs in his rookie year, but he is certainly not consistent enough at the plate to forgive his bone headed mistakes in the field.
  15. It has to be some bullpen arms that gets the call from TR right? Stauffer's not lighting the world on fire right now... Also, has Alex Meyer completely fallen off the map for a potential promotion this year? Nolasco's spot in the rotation should not be set in stone.
  16. Unlike Byron Buxton who I am all for an aggressive approach to get him to the majors ASAP, I am completely fine with this conservative approach with Hicks. Maybe I would feel differently if the Twins have not already given him extended time and opportunities with the team over the last 2 seasons. He may only be a AAAA type of player who never really gets it figured out at the MLB level. I'd let him be the star of AAA for the time being, and if he continues to play this for a few more months, I'd like to see him in August/September
  17. Like most commenters have mentioned I am really enjoying this current string of good baseball by the Twins. Are we contenders yet? Too early to tell. But some promising trends so far: we have a 12-11 record so far in the AL Central. I'm too lazy (and a few drinks too far) on looking up stats, but it seemed like we were getting crushed by teams in our own division the last couple of years. We've also been winning against bad teams so far, which I hope continues the rest of the way. I think 3rd place in the Central is certainly possible this year as the White Sox took over as the division's dumpster fire, and the Indians SP has regressed; specifically Kluber. If we are within 10 games from a WC or division crown in mid-July, who will be our Shannon Stewart circa 2003 that brings us over the hump and back into the playoffs?
  18. Okay thanks for that. So I would assume they would go with the same approach with Buxton whenever they bring him up. Sign him for a 4 year smaller deal, then a much larger contract when he's 28-29 years old.
  19. Did the Twins wait until Mauer was at arbitration #4 year until we paid him $23 million a year?
  20. You love the topic "year of control" don't you? I've read this in multiple forums by you. If you've read and learned from other forums, you would know that a "year of control" is not burned when the rosters expand in September. Now before you change the subject to "cost of control" I'm going to quote stringerbell's reply from your comment in another thread. "Year of cost control.Yes, if Buxton were recalled before the All-Star break, it is possible that he would be eligible to be a "Super 2" and making him arbitration eligible after less than three full seasons. This would make every contract he signs with the Twins more expensive." I doubt we will ever get to this problem with Buxton. Because if he comes up and is as-advertised, we are going to lock him up in a long-term deal just like Mauer. Bring up Buxton ASAP.
  21. I don't see any harm in having a cup of coffee in the big leagues.. On another note, why is it assumed that if he struggles in this 2 week stint, that his confidence/development as a player will crumble? In theory, you're seeing better pitching at the MLB level. We won't know if he'll sink or swim once he sees this level of pitching. If he does struggle and gets sent back down, wouldn't he see the ball better just from having that experience?
  22. When is the super 2 deadline? I want him up ASAP. He's already a huge upgrade over Schafer & Robinson
  23. Is there any mention of Rosario being in the lineup for game 2 of this series?
  24. Welcome to the big leagues Eddie Rosario! It may just be a 2 week trial, but give them a reason to keep you up here for good.
  25. To make a point on Santana, sure he could come help out in the 2nd half of this season. More realistically I would think he's going to be very inconsistent. He's going to have some rust after not pitching for half a year recovering from not injesting/injecting PED's, right? Or does that logic only apply to Buxton & Sano working off the rust mentioned in earlier threads?
