    I have these same concerns. Don't believe in the climate excuse at all. The Twins have a long standing preconception of not paying top dollar, so perhaps agents steer their clients away from the organization? Does Falvey and Levine already have a reputation for offering below market value contracts?

    My biggest concern in this update is yet another big name free agent not considering Minnesota at all as a landing place. Why does Bumgarner have no interest playing in Minnesota? This is a pattern, not random occurrences.

    Congrats to Antoine Winfield Jr! Considering he’s graduating this year, I really don’t see why he would stick around any longer in college football. He could be a 1st/2nd round draft pick this year.

    Being “in” on a player does nothing for me. Maybe other fans think it’s neat to read reports that the Twins spoke to Zack Wheeler. I’m not that fan. A perfect way to eliminate this perception that the Twins never sign big time free agents is to actually sign one! Just one is a really, really good start. The regime is different, but the tactics remain the same for free agency. Will I also get a bunch of positive press for continuing to go to a car dealership and offer $10,000 below MSRP to the salesman?

    The season before signing with the Twins, Phil Hughes pitched to a 5.19 ERA in 145 innings. I'd scratch that example from the high end free agent report.

    Cute side story for the signing. Makes you wonder if they offered 5/$100, and he had another offer of 5/$120 from the Reds, would he have accepted? All I know is this morning Buster Olney published the Phillies are seen as TOP BIDDER for Zack Wheeler. But hey, what do I know?

    Like I said, just putting pieces of the puzzle together. I'll keep repeating this. Free agency is really simple! Offer the most total money, and the player will sign. Just ask the Cincinnati Reds. Also, hey, if it makes you feel better that the Twins finished 3rd in the Wheeler sweepstakes I'm not going to stop you! I'm so very tired of just being "in" on a player. I'd very much like to sign one to help win games.

    I would love to hear one example of a player who turned down more money from the Twins to sign elsewhere. Though I think I may be dead before that happens. Free agency is really simple. Offer the most total money. You win the services of that player! Crazy concept.

    Low bid was my exact term, not least money. And they are the low bid if they’re out of the running.

    Yep. And here’s the last piece of the puzzle.. If they are out of the running, they aren’t the team offering the most money!

    Okay. How many of those teams are coming off 101 wins and a 1st round playoff exit? And how many of those teams' leadership team made the bold proclamation they are targeting "impact pitching"?

    Putting pieces of the puzzle together. Doogie tweeted the Twins have offered Wheeler a contract, willing to go 5 years. Rosenthal and Ulney didn't have the Twins listed as a team in contention for Wheeler. Other Twins reporters on Twitter are saying the Twins are basically out of the running. What does that mean to you?

    Once again, the Twins are the low bid. Oh boy!

    Owners have already suppressed free agency costs. I guess the next logical step for them is suppressing arbitration costs so they can pocket MOAR money. Would the decision with Gausman change at all if he was projected to receive $8 million instead of $10 million? Or $6 million instead of $10 million? We'll never know, but I'm willing to guess the additional $2-3 million dollars wasn't the primary reason he was non-tendered.

    The trend this off-season appears to be teams not willing to pay for bounce back potential. Gausman is one of a dozen or so players now who were non-tendered because they are coming back from injury, need time to recover from an injury, or had a rough 2019. If other teams aren't willing to do it, why should the Twins?
