  1. Actually.... -- Just turned on the game myself and am wondering what happened to the "Looks like TR was right about Correia and you all were wrong!" threads.
  2. Especially when the Astros are going to return the favor by giving us some freebies.
  3. Great at-bat by Morneau, but I'm going to have to mute the TV when he comes up because this "turned a corner" narrative is old. For some reason I have the image in my head of Morneau playing peek-a-boo with Dickbert.
  4. Just want to compliment Clete on not showing off like Buxton by making sure that he was kept to a double. Allowed Bernier to serve a purpose and bunt him over to third, allowing Dozier's double to drive him in.
  5. Anyone else just thinking that this is Gibson trying to outsmart the innings limit?
  6. I agree, but then everyone should be emulating thise teams, The problem with comparing the Twins to the As and Rays is that both teams are far more innovative and less entrenched than the Twins are in old philosophies. Both are on the cutting edge of player evaluation while the Twins movement in that direction has been glacial in its speed. In order for the Twins to even begin moving in that direction, you'd be talking about a complete organizational overall, which would need to include the complete dismantling of the good old boys club they have going. I'd love to see it, but it's not going to happen.

    Arcia

Well, they do quantify results on the field nicely. Also, based on what I've seen, Arcia can hit and Hicks, at this point, could legitimately be pinch hit for by several national league pitchers.
  8. I think this is right on. At the point we're at, the Twins have played it passive in every aspect. While there may be legit excuses for each individual instance, the pattern should be disturbing. The notable exception was trading away both CF. Of course, that led to the reckless promotion of Hicks, which I think is tough to argue as the right imove at this point. Still I liked the trades, but think they should have gone another direction in CF. I also think it's worth pointing out that being passive in one respect can lead to being passive in another. Avoiding signing anything but bottom of the barrel FA meant that there wasn't going to much as far as trade options went this season unless someone played above potential.
  9. I've loved seeing Morneau play as a Twin, but now he's one of the worst hitting first basemen on one of the worst hitting teams in the league. What team is he actually a legitimate upgrade for?
  10. So, you probably don't want to trade Perkins then. Hey, I don't either, but I doubt even the Twins don't value a pitcher who is going to throw 60-70 IP as highly as a pitcher who will throw around 200IP or a one of the most valuable positions in the field. I'd assume that the best type of starting pitcher you could get for Perk is a #4, especially if he is young and under team control. And we have plenty of those.
  11. Mauer had played more games for the Twins than anyone else until this leave. After the leave, he'll still have played the second most. Lets give the guy a break, eh? Despite the way a local personality has branded him I really don't think he's into milking it. The Twins publicly said they'd give any player the same treatment. So, if they don't now, they'd look pretty bad.
  12. No one will. Not televised.
  13. Baseball (and most sports) don't treat them like adults either until they're late twenties vets. Parmelee and Dozier are still called "kids."
  14. I hope we're all getting more from the article than just more details on why Sano was benched. Those details were included but it certainly was not the point of the article, IMO. The organization has benched it's three best Latin American players recently and includes just one coach from that part of the world in its entire organization.
  15. They've definitely forgotten to call Infield Fly on some very high pop flies to the warning track and in the bleachers. Hicks let them drop to try for the double play. EDIT: Doh, someone got the jokes in first..
  16. It's disappointing some of us are getting to the point of being rude about this discussion. Maybe rather than get to that point, step away.
  17. I think the last comment is true of both sides and that at this point, we're not changing each others' opinions. I wouldn't say the Twins didn't try and address their pitching depth at all, I'd just argue that it wasn't done in any meaningful way, and I'll leave it at that. The upside is that we still have half a season to see what that brings and we could end up being wrong if KC turns his recent troubles around and Pelfrey really has found his stride.
  18. I think this is exactly what's going on. Some of us would have liked to have seen more in the offseason, even if it failed, because there was clearly more out there that could have helped the Twins. While others think that there's really nothing more he could have done.
  19. Thanks for the condescension, but I was debating the following point from you, implying some of us were making disingenuous arguments. You argued that people (with my perspective) had somehow changed our opinions and we were all wild about Ryan's offseason. My point was that in fact, many of us that are arguing TR did a poor job in pursuing FA had that perspective in the first place and are now using evidence to support that. I think the specific examples are an extension of that. As for looking at the rotation in hindsight, you're right to some extent that those specific things you mention couldn't have been predicted. However, those of us that were critical of the offseason (and much of the national media, too) were correct on the whole about the rotation, that the Twins rotation would be one of the worst in baseball. The argument has been brought up here (and in your post) that Ryan shouldn't have gone any harder because there weren't FA pitchers that could improve the Twins rotation. So, the argument has been made that TRs lack of aggressiveness was the correct strategy. That last part of the argument is based on absolute hindsight (and in my opinion, false). There were a lot more pitchers than the just the three you mention that would have improved the Twins rotation. You're right that the Twins may not have been lucky enough, or done a good enough job evaluating things in the first place, to land one of them, but it's clear that the original strategy failed.
  20. I think you'll find less hypocrisy than you think. Most of us frustrated with the results were saying not enough done, though I'll admit I thought it would be better than it is. Ironically, I think, it's more likely you're seeing some people who took the stance that the rotation would be better are now saying, "Well, what could he have done?" using hindsight to justify their original position. For example.... You use hindsight here, but there are other problems with the argument. For example, there are more than a dozen pitchers in the list that would have improved the Twins rotation, not just three. Some of us point out that fact repeatedly but it seems to get ignored. Also, if you're only going to go for low cost starters, you better be better at it than everyone else, but people are using it as an excuse as if it's not his fault that TR limited himself and then wasn't able to improve the rotation. Finally, what's silly is people saying we can't be critical of a GM who said starting pitching is the Twins #1 need and that we want to be competitive in September, but we're out of it in July and have the worst rotation in baseball. Seriously?
  21. Ok. I went back and looked at it. It has a big reliance on prospects who, at best, just moved to AA this year, which -especially after Hicks- seems like it should be cautious about. I hope you're right about it because there's holes to fill to get it back to even 2012 levels, IMO, much less competitive levels. My point is, even I hope you're right about the approach to FA changing, but if not, I still don't see how these major question marks alter the accountability landscape.
  22. Good to know, but what makes next season different from this one, except that it's another season worth? I'm mean if you were OK with this offseason why would more movement be necessary for next? I don't see the discussion being that much different and it's likely the FA pitching market won't be as robust, or at least any better and with the new revenue actually available FA prices may increase again. The Twins will have significantly fewer trade chips this offseason as well. If your argument is that the Twins will be better, overall, there are reasons that's in doubt. The lineup could have as many losses as gains next season with players leaving and/or continuing to age and the only hitter I reasonably expect to add significantly to the lineup next season would be Arcia. I'm not trying to be argumentative her but I am curious what the difference is in accountability between seasons.
  23. If anyone knew Gibson wouldn't be starting the year in the majors, it was Ryan. That was something he should have been aware of, so he could have made a plan for this. The argument was often made that additional signings would block Gibson. Of course, we have at least two spots that could open even after he has been called up. Most of us, thought that Diamond would be considerably worse this season, though arguably not as bad as he was. His early numbers were too good to be true but his end of the season numbers should have been a warning. Worley is certainly a disappointment, and those of us who can only view numbers certainly hoped for better, but I would hope Ryan would have been able to make a better decision with more information than that. Of course, maybe he's been hurt all season. No matter how we cut it, results or prediction, there wasn't a ton of hope for this starting staff, so IMO, those backing TR here don't have that much to stand on unless, of course, not a single GM in the league improved his rotation through FA this season?
