  1. I've got to agree with Nick that the article is kind of a strawman argument. OK, Mr. Mackey when can we get carried away and call Scott Diamond the Twins' ace? Suppose he finishes the season 14-7 with an ERA of 2.90. Clearly the best pitcher on the Twins in 2012. Now suppose next year he goes 18-9 with an ERA of 3.12. Then would it be OK to call him the Twins' ace? Or is the argument that he should not be called an "ace"?
  2. [h=2]Hernandez perfect against Rays[/h] The Mariners' Felix Hernandez pitched the season's third perfect game, a 1-0 win. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!! Two for two! Perfect games to boot!
  3. Might as well plug Florimon into the SS role and play Carroll at 2B. If Florimon can't crack a .320 OBA then I would put Carroll at SS and play Casilla at 2B. I am somewhat intrigued by Mastroianni playing 2B.
  4. I think they die a slow death. I completely abandoned KFAN, aka the Vikings and Wolves shills, when KSTP 1500 went to sports talk. I wonder if KTWN would try to hire away some of 1500's personalities? Anybody know the status of Reusse, Soucheray, Pellisero, Zulgad, etc. contracts? I suppose there is a no-compete clause that would cause a time out for these guys before they could switch over to KTWN. For that matter how long is KSTP's contract with ESPN? Riverbrain, I just don't see a music format on KTWN for 20 hours and then the Twins game for 4 hours on game days. I think they have to go to sports talk.
  5. Another vote for non-tendered here. I was at the game last night and Casilla had a couple of lousy at bats and one good one. With runners on 2nd and 3rd he swung at the first pitch and grounded to the right of Prince Fielder. Although Fielder isn't the quickest on his feet, Casilla nonchalantly jogged down to first base. Second at bat he struck out swinging, catcher dropped the ball but Casilla wasn't paying attention. Last at bat he seemed to be concentrating more and he rocketed a line drive off the right field wall. Kind of a microcosm of his career with the Twins--he seems to be tuned in to playing hard about 1/3 of the time.
  6. I went to the game last night. It was Joe Mauer sideburns night, so plenty of people were donning the fake sideburns (some as mustaches, some as Groucho Marx style eyebrows.) The Twins got whipped by the Rays. After the game they had some big time slow pitch softball players put on an home run hitting exhibition. We were sitting in the 2nd row of the 2nd deck of the Home Run Porch in left field--prime seats for catching home run balls. After the game there was some fireworks. I took some video and uploaded it to YouTube Unfortunately, the battery in my phone was really depleted so I didn't get some of the really good shots of home runs coming at us. From our vantage point the ball starts out as a pinprick and grows larger and larger as it approaches us. I did get some good video clips of guys making bare handed catches and catches with baseball gloves. Too bad Hrbek muffed his play. TC Bear made his catch. It's pretty cool to see that ball come all the way from home plate and end up a few feet away from you. During the fireworks the phone battery was on life support and during the grand finale the audio track was shut down (boo!).
  7. Didn't Gardenhire do that when he brought in Perdomo? And then removed Mauer and Willingham from the lineup? And then after Mastroianni beat out an infield hit in the 8th, and despite Pena not holding him, no steal was called for?
  8. OK, there was slim pickings. I got 2 seats via Stub Hub in sec. 229 for $4 over face value. I suppose since this game is a premium night I might have actually paid less than "face value".
  9. I'll check it out. I also looked at scorebig.com, a similar ticket service but with no fees, but they don't (or can't) sell tickets the day of the event. Yes, tonight figures to be a high demand game. The Twins website didn't have many good seats for sale. Stub Hub prices are over face value right now. Home Plate box seats, regular price $69, are $84, $95 and $106. Speculators...
  10. Mechanics are terrible. Leg kick isn't high enough, he twists his leg and hips too much, and he blows through his balance point. His finish is violent and he turns his back to the hitter.
  11. My second favorite baseball team, the Rays, are in town this weekend and I'm thinking about going to the game tonight. Tell me your stories of prices you've received from scalpers--where you found the scalpers, what price you paid relative to face value, and how close to game time you bought the tickets. I've seen them along 6th St. and Butler Square, hanging out by Hubert's, Glueks, The Alley, etc.
  12. When Dayton's became Marshall Fields I thought if they had bought the naming rights and the new Twins ballpark was named "Marshall Fields", it would have had a nice synergy. But Macy's bought Marshall Fields so it was not to be....
  13. From the StarTrib: Diamond, 24, reached his own milestone, becoming the first Twins pitcher to reach 10 victories in a season since 2010. But he was happier for his fellow countryman, Morneau, the fourth Canadian-born major leaguer to reach 200 homers. I wonder where Diamond stands in the pantheon of Canadian pitchers to reach 10 victories? How about Canadian players with last names starting with the letter 'D'? Does anyone else find the inevitable notation of so-and-so being Canadian to be superfluous and annoying? It seems that Canada gets more play in this area than Venezuela or the Dominican Republic. Why make a distinction as to nationalities when a milestone is reached? Who holds the record for doubles from Pago Pago?
  14. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd put the irritation level at about a 5. If it were the Ozzie Guillen White Sox I would put it at a 7. Last 80 times I looked the Twins are not going to make the playoffs so you've got to take what you can get from wherever it's offered.
  15. I hate that I was right when I predicted the type of players the Twins would get for Liriano. http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php?2150-Liriano-s-value&p=32407&viewfull=1#post32407
  16. "You are hereby circled." [unbelievable nobody had this one yet.] "Take that pitch and go the other way with it."
  17. Thanks for the info. I have Pujols and Trumbo on my fantasy team. I think you need to post his projected year end stats.
  18. I'm starting to come around to the idea of replacing Gardy as well. The players have become too comfortable with him. Gardy seems tired. You can only tell players to make the plays the proper way so many times and if they don't listen anymore you've lost the team. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in years past Gardy would discipline players that would miss a cutoff man, run the bases incorrectly, or miss signs. I don't think I've heard of anyone being fined or benched for anything this year. I don't think anyone has been in Gardy's doghouse this year. Let him finish out the year, and please, please hire someone outside the organization that already has MLB managerial experience (I don't have a name in mind.)
  19. F*ck!n' Mohammed! Do you have to curse?
  20. PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a $144 million, six-year contract that prevents the 2008 World Series MVP from becoming a free agent after the season. The deal includes a club vesting option for 2019 and a limited no-trade provision, the team announced Wednesday in a statement. A news conference is scheduled for noon before the game against Milwaukee.
  21. Looks like Loria is in another salary dump.
  22. Owens is OK, Grossman strikes out a lot. Neither of the pitchers appear to be power type pitchers. I'm not too thrilled with that trio, but if that was the only offer I'd take it.
  23. I think you've answered your own questions. The Twins should be cut some slack on this one because Plouffe has said that he's had this injury before and he usually recovers in a day or two. It's taking longer this time, so the Twins were caught in the middle. There really isn't anyone to call up. I wouldn't reward Valencia. I'd make sure Danny Boy is aware that he's the logical call-up but he's not coming up. BTW, it's not a sprained thumb, it's a bone bruise. Personally, I think Plouffe should grow some antlers, tape up the thumb and play.
  24. Let's wait and see if he gets 20 HR. Assume Span is traded. Who's going to play RF for the Twins next year? I think it would be nice to have Willingham and Hunter in the lineup.
  25. I don't think Torii could be had for $5M a year. You think .267/.328/.418 and 20 HRs and above average OF defense is only worth $5M a year? Who are some comps? Johnny Damon (.261/.326/.418) made $5.75M for the Rays in 2011. Coco Crisp (.264/.314/.369) is making $6M and will make $7M next year.
