    ok. this is what I read on MLB Dot Com The Mariners' walk-off victory over the Orioles on Tuesday night capped an unprecedented slate in Major League Baseball. For the first time in the league's history, all 15 home teams won on the same day. Prior to Tuesday, the closest the home teams have come was 12 wins more than a century ago, on May 23, 1914, according to Elias Sports Bureau So, still pretty impressive.

    My preseason pick for AL MVP, Josh Donaldson, is tearing it up this year. As great as Trout has been (and always is) I still think Donaldson wins it.

    Yes, but can someone build up timing and hand strength in the majors, or can that just happen in AAA? :-) I hope this was taken in jest by those reading it. This reason has been batted back and forth and now it's just fun. No insults intended.

    yeah, my post had more to do with the idea that our current team would be hurt by downgrading from Hunter to Buxton. I'm not 100% that would even be true if we take into account defense and even if there was a slight dropoff in overall value, I doubt it makes any difference in the win-loss column. I've said before I have much less problem with the idea they doing this for his health, though I think if that's the case another different course of action should be implemented. I also don't think it's any safer for him to play in AAA than it is in the majors., though I get you point.

    It certainly doesn't confirm they shouldn't be taken seriously. Especially when one realizes these are comparative stats and people being compared change year to year. And when we realize performance changes year to year all the time, no one stays the same. And when we also realize these stats don't compare him to himself. I have no doubt the second part of your post is true. At least nowadays. Though hopefully for him his agent cares about it. Because over his career, it's been a positive for him and when going to the table with teams, the more positives the better in contract negotiations. And as much as some want to dismiss it at hocom, I imagine most teams don't think it's hocom. At least not the parts that go into it, even if they have things they think are better. Most people want as much good info as possible.

    What's funny is that Hunter's offense this year has been worse than last year, practically across the board. Yet he had a negative WAR last year because of horrible defense. This year, even with the worse offense, he's got a 1.2 WAR due to his defense being not quite as horrible as it was last year (but still bad). In other words, the defensive metrics he hates is what is making him look better than last year as an overall player.

    I wonder if the outstanding defense Buxton would provide would make up for the lesser offense he would produce this year. Let's see, fantastic defensive player in CF (Buxton), a very good defensive CF(Hicks) moves to RF replacing Hunter. Defense goes from Rosario, Hicks, Hunter to Rosario, Buxton, Hicks. If OPS is truly the stat to value, how many points dropoff would he have to drop to make the defensive upgrade meaningless? Assuming, winning games this year should even be the primary reason for any moves at this point.

    Torii seems like the kind of guy who would want a farewell tour with all the bells and whistles. Mmmm, all that attention. That hasn't happened this year, so I imagine he doesn't plan to retire after this season.

    I imagine most all teams will expand their rosters in September. How much playing time some of these guys who get called up for a looksie will see will be dependent on how close they are for a playoff spot and/or whether or not they are better than the options on the roster before September 1 (but the team didn't want to call them up for whatever reason, usually service year reasons). I hate the expanded roster rule myself. They always talk about how the games are more important in September (not true, all games are equally important throughout the year) and yet September is when they decided to let teams field inferior clubs as teams are jockeying for a playoff run.

    I would like to just point out that September play is different now than in the past. It started changing when they adding playoff spots and now that they have another, more teams are keeping competitive teams playing deeper into the month. I agree with almost all of your post, but I think there are much fewer teams throwing in the towel in September.

    Yeah , that was a great narrative they predictably put out there. Torii getting a huge chunk of the credit for the winning. He taught them how to win.Now that the tailspin has happened, where did all that go? Or is he now on to chapter two? entitled: Teaching them how to lose. :-) I imagine Torii will go right into broadcasting. He'll fit right in with guys like Harold Reynolds. Re-telling his old baseball stories on the air (doing his favorite thing, talking about himself), continuing to spread 'old school wisdom' and basically just enjoying the fact there is a mic hooked up to him and he can talk to millions.

    I don't use McGee because he had no power to speak of. An average of 6 HR for every 162 games played. I think Buxton will have much more power. But it's another interesting comparison.

    So, are we guessing right around 1 Sept is the out of the blue, no reason at all, pure coincidence of a time-frame where he will magically be healthy enough and have curve balls conquered to make the jump back to the majors?

    Except that Seth said at the start of this thread, in the OP, one of the main reasons Buxton got optioned is because he has no place to play due to Hicks, Rosario AND Hunter and the team should get acclaim for having an OF that has no room for Buxton. So Hunter is one of the obstacles..

    Those two look like they are on the same hand, not one on one hand and one on the other.

    Hunter has a no trade close. Where else is he going to be loved as much as he will be here, by fans and media?

    So, the reason we have to play Hunter is to try and win games this year, And the very poor defense and .303 OBP is going to help us significantly more than very good defensive OF with probably less offense. As if that difference is significant enough to make the difference in overall win totals. Ryan gave up on the team, he threw in the towel this year when he did what he did at the deadline. Now we want to say decisions should be made on this season now? How does THAT work? Ryan just told his team and the fans what he thought of the teams chances. Pelfrey should be gone with May or Berrios taking his spot. Buxton should be up and hunter relegated to bench. It should be about next year, period. This is probably about not benching a fan favorite in the face of season that is likely to end in major disappointment once again.

    I have a hard time applauding the team for having a 40 year old poor defensive RF with a .303 OBP. That's a guy who has zero business blocking anyone. If the argument is about not being able to find a place to play Buxton, it's easy. You sit the 40 year old poor defender who can't get on base and has no future with the team.

    I've been comparing him to Eric Davis since the first few times I saw him play. Through the roof talent on both sides of the ball, always getting hurt.

    Ryan already gave up on his team at the deadline, now he's holding back valuable experience for Buxton and May (and Berrios too,probably) which is vital for rebuilding. Keep delaying the adjustment period in a year like this?

    Really? On a rebuilding team we should be making sure we give our 40 year old playing time over the #1 prospect in the game? That's hilarious. Why on earth would we do that, especially on a sinking ship of a season and on a team that is supposed to be building for the future? And we think a guy with an OBP barely over .300 is a top of the order guy. Cracking me up. I can sort of buy the 'not rushing him back from injury' excuse, though. That's been tossed around on a few threads.
