  1. I dont consider looking at ERA and wins/losses at critically thinking about his performance.
  2. You know who has been pretty consistently throwing 200 or more innings a season (if only barely). Chris Archer. Who apparently is below average, according to some ;-)
  3. Ok, I wont lump Archer's WAR over the last 3 or 4 years, cause consistency apparently doesnt matter. How about over the last two seasons? 5th in the AL in fWAR. How about just last year? Archers fWAR ranked 5th in the AL. Sounds below average to me...
  4. nope, not in defense only, overall best CFs which includes all aspects of perfromance. These are being shown on MLB network (and I think there is a running article on the MLB site that gives the Shredders rankings). Its a series they do every year called top 10 now (or maybe top 10 right now) they do it for every position including relief and starting pitching. His reason for marking down Trout was defense and he brought up DRS...but then he had Blackmon #1. Guess he didnt look at HIS DRS ;-) Everyone else on the show had Trout as the no doubt #1 overall CF.
  5. yeah, I rephrased a couple posts after that one. Archer is the better pitcher and is younger but it does depend on who we would have to give up to decide which would actually be the better deal.
  6. yeah, I think he will be an upper end of the rotation type. Im not sure there is another starting pitching prospect in our minor league system that I have higher expectations of.
  7. so, they shouldnt have gone after him at all. Based on what you are saying about Darvish now, we shouldnt have gone after him at all. Look, I am on record saying it was fantasy to believe the Twins would sign Darvish, but offering and letting people know it was the largest offer we ever made is a meaningless if they know its nowhere near enough to sign the guy. A few years ago, Willingham was our biggest FA signing ever. We dont have a history of large FA contracts. Our bar is low. And yes, many teams havent made big splashes in FA. Many havent needed to. Many arent in position talent wise to where it makes sense to do so (i.e. no hope to contend). Teams like Milwaukee and the Twins both need to and are possible contender. Milwaukee has done some good stuff this offseason. They are going for it.
  8. yeah, and for me, at the end if the contract,I like to see if a player came close or not to being worth his overall contract before saying wow that was a bad contract. And of course injuries have to be taken into account. Based on market values, I imagine Darvish will perfrom very close to his contract when it's all said and done.
  9. Brock, in fairness, contracts usually underpay a player at the beginning of FA contract and overpay later. Often contracts that are deemed horrible in hindsight only focus on the end of the contract and fail to recognize how much value the player gave at the beginning of the contract. And thats before we talk about how much value a team gets from playes before free agency. The best way for teams to sign guys would be higher salaries during the beginning of the FA contract and lower at the end. And it almost never works that way. In fact, it is often opposite, which makes some FA contracts look even worse at the end.
  10. The 'average fan' may not be thinking about future salaries of some of our younger players but plenty of people around here have. They probably also realize that all teams have players that get raises in arbitration and still manage to sign quality FAs here and there. All teams have to deal with that. Let's hope all those guys' play are worthy of big arbitration numbers. We should be so lucky. Now was the time. If ever there was a time to make a big splash to address your yearly GLARING need, it was now, right? Weak division, young players who could take the next step, they made the playoffs last year. This is the kind of situation that has been talked about over and over as THE time to do this. And we continue to dive for scraps. In regards to the last paragraph, it makes it seem like you're now saying that signing Darvish wouldn't have been a good idea and that it's turned out to be a good thing after all. Why exactly? That lesser talent that likely won't move the needle will be even cheaper? You were all for signing the almost 32 year old, were you not? And now that the Twins couldn't get it done, it wasn't a good idea to sign him after all? Turns out that it's actually better for us that we didn't get him?
  11. People going after Santana knew he wasn't going to play for the Twins and he was due a huge contract that had to be done before the trade was even done and way before 4 seasons of control. Twins had zero leverage. I wouldn't bat an eye losing Kepler Gordon and Romero for Archer.
  12. Over the last four seasons, and while pitching against usually extremely tough offenses in the AL East, Archer ranks 5th for starters in the AL in fWAR. Over the last THREE seasons, he ranks 3RD in the AL in fWAR. 3RD. He has blemishes but you have to look hard. I guess the term Ace is reserved for like 3 pitchers.
  13. I think some people's idea of Ace might be a biiiit too high.
  14. I'll be there for Kepler bobblehead night
  15. someone like Cain would never go there...
  16. Archer was better in 2017 than 2016. He also tied for 9th in fWAR amongst all qualifying MLB starters (5th in AL). He is consistently very good in a division where the offenses are normally top notch. Not exactly sure why so many seem to think he isnt really all that great. We trying to make ourselves feel better when we dont get him and be ready to scream overpay if someone else does?
  17. Archer has pitched over 200 innings in the last three years and just under 200 IP 4 seasons ago. 2013 fWAR: 3.2 2014 fWAR: 5.2 2016 fWAR: 3.2 2017 fWAR: 4.6 And he's done that facing the toughest offenses in baseball consistently. We have anybody close to that?
  18. yeah, that's why I rephrased a couple posts after I wrote that.
  19. you'd balk at getting a bonafide ace if it meant losing Kepler? I'm a Kepler fan, but that's an easy yes.
