  1. Yeah, I didn't really get those comparisons either, especially Pittsburg. 3rd best record in baseball. For those who like ERA, 2nd best team ERA in baseball. Comparing the needs of the Pirates pitching staff and our pitching staff is like comparing a Rembrandt to a velvet painting of dogs playing poker. Pitt is in the playoffs, Twins struggling to get in. Their needs are nowhere near the same.
  2. I hope the Twins are smart enough to not judge SPs on a stat like ERA (especially after 16 games), but not sure they are.
  3. That's absolutely not why. And we have plenty of fodder on the 40 man to lose right now without blinking.
  4. 'He's near the amount of innings we wanted him to get to, so we don't want to take any chances with him."' Wasn't there a quote from Anthony saying there was no plan at all concerning innings for Berrios?
  5. He won't start the season in the rotation, no way.
  6. I have no doubt that's true.
  7. This is like when Ryan said the reason he traded Luis Castillo at the deadline was because he was going to be a FA at the end of the year and they weren't going to re-sign him, So he figured they should get something for him (forget, for a moment, he was doing well and we were in a playoff race). A couple days later he said that he would have traded Castillo even if he was under contract for the following season. I don't believe anything that man says.
  8. Our record this year is pretty surprising. Not sure how anyone can think we will have a better chance to make the playoff next year than this year. 'Build and hope for the future' is the Twins FO motto. That and 'Now isn't the time to make bold transactions, NEXT year will be.'
  9. So maybe we see Berrios in June, July next year. Something to look forward to.
  10. I wish I could say this surprises me, but it's exactly what I'd expect from TR.
  11. One poster asked: 'Has anyone associated with the organization come out and said they don't want to pitch Berrios out of the bullpen because of screwing up his future?' Mike responded to THAT by saying 'Someone quoted Antony as saying that, yes.' So they were talking bullpen use. Then you quoted what Mike wrote above and gave a quote and a link about innings not bullpen use.
  12. that article was posted almost a month ago, though. and doesn't seem to be in the context of whether or not to call him up. Nor does it address whether or not to pitch him out of the bullpen.
  13. It was a comparison that popped into his head very quickly in a chat. Mostly due to innings limits. Perhaps in an article he might have chosen something different, but when you are answering things very quickly in a chat that gets a ton of questions, his point was still clear. That hiding behind an innings cap as the reason to not promote is BS.
  14. not sure how he passed TRs eye test last year so it's possible he will this year
  15. That's certainly your opinion. Problem is that every time someone (a poster or an article) says something you don't agree with, you say the info doesn't say anything, or the logic isn't sound, or(in this case) that what is said destroys his credibility, or whatever else. As if everything said that you don't agree with is invalid or bunk and the source isn't credible. That's hardly the case. As far as who he is, Senior writer at Fangraphs, co-managing editor of the Hardball Times, writes for ESPN Insider, worked 7 years for a MLB ball club, and someone whose opinion is valued enough he is asked to do a chat by a major sports site. HIS credibility isn't in question.
  16. .230/.289/.398, 0.1 WAR. 700K on field value. Over 9M in intangible veteran leadership showing them how to win value.
  17. It's kind of what I expected since most of his games played have been in the 2nd half and we have a losing record in the 2nd half. And I'm not trying to diminish his accomplishments, I just don't think a position player playing only half a season's games (and half of those, at most, at an actual position) should even be considered for an MVP vote. He may get some though, nothing surprises me with these awards
  18. 14th ranked rotation ERA in the AL in the 2nd half. 26th ranked rotation ERA in MLB in 2nd half (over 5.00)
  19. 2nd half games are worth the exact same as the first half games and, therefore, have equal importance. No position player should get MVP votes for 1/2 a season and offense alos shouldn't be the only thing considered. IMO.
  20. I would hope the voters wouldn't give any position player who only played around half a season an MVP vote. BTW, what's our record with him in the lineup?
  21. that's assuming he would still have this ISO if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.
  22. MLB Tonight crew talking about Grienke being the frontrunner for the NL CY Young. Harold Reynolds get contradictory and says that yeah, he's got the great ERA but he never finishes games. That's his complaint. They try and explain it's a new age, and Reynolds keeps going on. The man does only have one CG this year, but he also leads the NL in innings pitched.
  23. Whenever Ryan calls up Kepler and Berrios THAT will be the right time. Just like it wasn't the right time for Buxton to be called up (cause, as we read here by so many, he wasn't ready) until Hicks got injured. THEN he was ready. Those precious few days were vital to his development.
  24. "Conventional wisdom among coaches and managers is that restricting innings for young starting pitchers, and slowly increasing the number of innings pitched over several years, gives pitchers' tissues sufficient time to adapt to the workload of a major league season," said Thomas Karakolis, lead investigator on the study. "But all our data shows that these strategies really make no difference in preventing injury." '"Injury is the result of workload exceeding the capacity of the body's tissues, so while counting innings is a tempting way to measure workload, it's actually a very flawed method," said Karakolis. "If coaches are looking for ways to prevent injury, simply limiting the number of innings is not the answer. They have to look at how hard a pitcher's body is working during each inning, each pitch." http://www.scienceda...50406121354.htm
