    I think we should find out if Arcia, Vargas or Sano are actually able to perform at this level before we toss aside a 2.5-3.5 WAR player. And we have time to decide about Plouffe anyway.

    I think all of Sano's value will come from his bat. I think it won't matter where he plays his defense will likely not be a strong suit. I also don't think we see Sano at 3B for 15-20 years either. I don't know what the answer is, but I imagine some players will hit better than we expect and some will hit worse and this gets worked out naturally. If the Twins trade Plouffe and put Sano at 3B and his defense is horrible, that's yet another spot where we decided defense holds no value.

    If a 3B is between the 7th and 10th best 3B he's better than middle of the road. Plouffe was 10th in wRC+ last year, he was 4th in UZR, he was 10th in DRS. Fangraphs had him #4 defensively. So top 10 offensive 3B and top 4 defender who has hit his prime and settled into his new position. 9th in WAR at 3.5 WAR. As someone who has never been a big fan of Plouffe, he's a valuable player. A player many Twins fan under-estimate because it took him so long to reach his potential. Part of the reason it took so long, IMO, was the Twins inability to see he wasn't a shortstop much earlier in his career. IMO, if we had just gotten him last year and he had the year he had Twins fans would be drooling all over him.

    I'm starting to think Bill James is starting to lose it. His interviews have become very, um, hard to follow.

    I like Berrios better as well. And there are a few prospects people, like Fangraphs' Kiley McDaniel, who do as well.

    I like to have some kind of actual proof before I believe someone took PEDS. For example, Jeff Bagwell. No proof that I'm aware of. There's 4.

    Is it more or less ridiculous than George Foreman naming all his boys George? There's George Jr, George III, George IV, George V, and George VI.

    Joe Mauer seems to get pitched outside a lot more than anyone else. More than any batter that I can remember. Maybe that's just my perception. When he gets pitches that are actually good to pull, he does that. Problem is he's trying to pull pitches that aren't meant to be pulled. I imagine because people keep talking about how he has to be a power guy.

    I hope Joe avoids all discussions like this, and basically anything on the internet about him, and focuses on just getting back to being how he was before. I would prefer no one gets in his head. I want to let him get back to doing what he does well and stop expecting him to be someone he isn't.

    For me, the number one issue is defense and how we didn't address the issue in a positive way.

    love this guy! Good to see Berrios so highly ranked by Fangraphs as well.

    and a FIP of 4.69 which would rank him lower than Nolasco, Gibson, Correia, Hughes.

    Yeah, I agree. He was 19 and pitching in A ball. Almost 3 years younger than the average age of players there. If things keep going smoothly, we should see him mid-late 2017. That's pretty quick and something I'd like to see from such a high draft pick.

    As a staff, I don't think we've embraced this part of pitching in a long time. Santana would do it, but I think the team's strict throw strikes at all costs policy makes opposing batters too comfy at the plate. The opposing batters know that most of the time, even in pitcher's counts, they'll get a hitter's pitch.

    Not being argumentative, but what starts are you referring to when you call them Koufax kind of starts? Seems like an unusual type of reference for many reasons not the least of which is the fact he doesn't strike people out and didn't have one complete game. Of those 12 games you mentioned, something like half of them he didn't even go 7 innings. Koufax and Gibson have like two things in common. They both started in the major leagues and they both have 6 letters in their last name :-) Having said all that, I'm not opposed to him getting a spot at all. His FIP says he deserves better than what he got.

    IMO, there really should be a battle for the 3-5 spot. I know that's not realistic, but it'd be nice.

    exactly. contenders are always looking for better pitching down the stretch and the best offer Beane apparently got was Fuld from a non-contender.

    There's nothing wrong with my character, thank you very much. As far as Milone goes, Baseball is a business. Teams have options. They are within their rights to use all of those options and players need to accept that. What should Beane have done, not go out and get players clearly better so as not to upset Milone? They had better pitchers for the rotation than him so they optioned him down. Then he COMPLAINED and demanded/requested (depending on what stories you want to believe, I'm guessing you want to believe the requested side) a trade instead of accepting the business side and that he wasn't one of their best five starters. Beane had five SPs better than Milone and didn't think it would be good for Milone to go to the bullpen, so there is only one choice. Milone could have looked forward and seen that starting pitchers would be leaving town this offseason and he'd likely be back in the rotation this year, but instead he did what he did. Now he's dealing with the same situation on a team with nowhere near the same talent in the rotation as the As had in their rotation when he got demoted.

    Beane said he made those trades because he saw the weakness and that the team would be going downhill in the 2nd half and he brought in players to ensure he didn't get out of the playoff picture. I wonder how bad it would have been if he hadn't done what he did. Cespedes is a pretty overrated player. He doesn't get on base and regardless of that one beautiful throw we all know, he's a below average defender. He's not a difference maker, IMO.

    the guy was a complainer there who needed the As defense and huge foul territory to be 'effective'. They didn't need him and they got something for him.

    'Revised Zone Rating (RZR) measures, “the proportion of balls hit into a fielder’s zone that he successfully converted into an out. RZR measures a player’s range, taking three things into account: the amount of Balls In Zone (BIZ) a player receives, a player’s total Plays Made, and a player’s total amount of Out Of Zone Plays Made (OOZ). It is, essentially, a simplified version of UZR. So it measures the range as opposed to the stat that is called range factor. Range factor is calculated by dividing putouts and assists by the number of innings or games played at a given defense position. For me, it seems there's a difference between speed and quickness.
