  1. Exactly. He had a FIP of 3.80, but an ERA of 4.47. Not surprisingly, Gibson was hurt pretty badly by the 'defense' we had out there. Too bad that wasn't addressed this offseason.
  2. yeah, I have them, at minimum, making the playoffs.
  3. Kiley never said they shouldn't try him as a starter. He, and many other scouts, just think eventually he'll be a closer. I don;t know why this evaluation upsets so many people. These guys get paid for their opinions because they're good at it, not because they are perfect at it.
  4. Seems the point he was making about Wimmers is that it's about time to see what he has. And my point is, it's about time to see what Meyer has. Past time on both, really. The fact that Meyer JUST turned 25 doesn't change that.
  5. yup, I was the one who asked the question in the chat :-) Additionally on page one of this thread, I pointed out his breakdown of Meyer where he said most scouts consider him a future closer and Kiley said #3/#4 starter or closer.
  6. I am way more excited to see Berrios suit up as a Twin than I am about Meyer. I Meyer the next Morrow, only taller?
  7. was he working all the pitches in his current repertoire during those years? Would he fall back on his better pitchers to avoid the walks, instead of continuing to work them?
  8. They may wonder whether or not it's a good idea to assume a guy, who is already 25, will improve his control enough. I don't know. As Kiley said, many scouts see him as a closer, there's likely a reason for that. I hope thy are wrong.
  9. Maybe it's the ability to control these pitches consistently they see as a problem. I don't know. I sometimes thing we 'want' our guys to be better than many scouts think they will be. Not that the scouts are infallible by any means ut I think sometimes fans quickly dismiss scouts thoughts if they knock a guy we are hoping will be very good.
  10. unfortunately, it seems a good chunk of scouts think otherwise. I hope you are right. In Nov 2014, Baseball America also had him behind Stewart and Berrios. That's where I'd put him too.
  11. Kiley McDaniel has him as our #6 prospect and says he sees him as a '#3/4 starter or closer. 'Most scouts think he ends up as a shutdown closer, but the Twins are trying to make him a starter and there’s still a chance Meyer gets there. If he can tone everything down to where it’s repeatable, the upside is probably a #3 starter but this seems destined for the bullpen at some point.' http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/evaluating-the-prospects-minnesota-twins/
  12. which stuff specifically? Edit. Oh, the info I asked for earlier. Thanks
  13. Not with RBI it doesn't. RBI opps are random events, completely out of the hands of the batter. You can have a season where you hit poorly with RISP and have a lot of RBI and another year where you hit well with RISP and have much less RBI, The year Howard won the MVP, one reason he won MVP was that he had more RBI than Pujols. Howard hit in the low .200s with RISP, Pujols hit almost .400 with RISP. Pujols did much better driving in the runs that were available to drive in, but Howard had more.
  14. anyone know Meyer's swinging strikeout rate as opposed to strikeouts where the guy looked at strike 3?
  15. Except that you specifically said, in your argument against WHIP, 'Anything that gives a silly little walk the same weight as a HR probably shouldn't be taken too seriously.' And 'anything' includes OBP and OPS. But now you say a stat that does that is okay because it also does something you like. Unfortunately, OPS isn't that great because it doesn't properly weigh OBP (too little value) and, therefore, wRC+ is better. Additionally, I never said WHIP WAS a great stat, It's just a quick rough stat. It's not great, but it's not worthless. I did say that all stats have their issues, so one can take shots at most any stat and say it's useless or silly, or whatever jabs they feel like using, depending on how they want it to fit their argument at the time. TRUTH is, the TWINS have real issues with their pitchers walking guys. They take pride in not doing that. THAT is indisputable. I NEVER said I agree with that obsessive philosophy, did I? Did I say if it were up to me, they shouldn't have him on the 25 man out of ST? No, I never said that. I wanted him up LAST year. But, he walks almost 4.5 guys per 9IP. Take that and the service time issue, and I doubt he makes the team out of ST because the TWINS will take that into account. and I liked the 'a wise poster' comment. I get it. I love little shots like that.
  16. Like OBP does and by extension OPS? Do those deserve to be taken at least somewhat seriously, or can they all be blown off too? yes, it's a imperfect stat for sure, like most any other stat (some more than others). the walks per 9 IP stands out in his case though, and in Meyer's case less than 10% of the hits he gave up were HR, so he is still giving up too many hit and walks per 9IP, especially the walks part (for a team that seriously hates pitchers to walk batters to the point of obsession). And that was the whole point. We were talking about why he likely wouldn't make the 25 man roster out of ST. I don't see the Twins looking at almost 4 1/2 walks per 9 IP and saying, yup he's ready. They'll at least keep him down long enough to get service time considerations and they can use the control issues as a reason.
  17. Oh, even better. Let's hope they get him.
  18. I think it would be good for him to do it more often if only to keep pitchers honest.
  19. See, I see it different. For most of his career Mauer has hit very well with RISP. Most pitchers know how good of a hitter Mauer is and I imagine most would rather face someone else than him in those situations. So they pick around the plate and hope he goes for their pitch instead of his. If he doesn't bite, the worst he can do is get on base. Beter that then give up the hit. Why go after a guy who hits like that? Instead of Mauer forcing the issue and swinging at pitcher's pitches, he does what he always does, look for his pitch. Make pitchers throw strikes. There is no guarantee that if he forced the issue or was more aggressive that we'd see better results by him swinging at pitches that are nibbling at the plate. I don't see it as passive, I see it as smart. Votto, when asked, has said pretty much the same thing. It's as if some would rather these guys swing at pitcher's pitches that could very well make unproductive outs then actually get another guy on base. Also, Mauer career slash line with RISP is better than his overall career slash line. Better BA (by 11 points), better OBP (55 points), better slugging % (20 points). So, for his career, he does better in those situations than not in those situations.
  20. yes his 2012 and 2013 season were very under-rated due to people looking at traditional counting stats and, in the case of 2013, the concussion that halted a very good season. I think he bounces back to be the kind of player he was in those two seasons.
  21. I feel bad for him, but I don't feel bad for the Tigers.
  22. I'm not sure that's fair, at least in regards to me. With this team so completely heck bent against walks, (seemingly a team point of pride even at the expense of BAA/OBPA/OPSA), I would just think that the Twins see that and think maybe he needs more time to get that under control. I remember Boof being a K guy too with a similar ERA in AAA and a similar WHIP. Of course the strike zone has expanded so maybe it's less of an issue now.
  23. Did he have a very good year in AAA? His Ks were impressive, but his walks were a big flashing red warning light and his WHIP wasn't great either. His ERA wasn't overly impressive either. Perhaps you can put those numbers into context, because it's certainly possible I'm missing something.
  24. his career wRC+ is right about 130 though. So 125 isn't too far from that and pretty darn good for a 1B. I'll go out on a limb and say we see a wRC+ of 135 or more from him this year while playing 135 or more games. (don't know what Molitor's game plan for subs will go).
