  1. If you add 5 more pitchers... don't you at least need to add a bullpen catcher? At this point in the season, why have Mauer and Doumit catching bullpens? And why not give a guy a call-up rather than go pull someone off the street (I imagine the AAA club does not have an 'official' BP catcher... correct?)? If nothing else, it gives your backups at AAA some familiarity with the staff in case of an emergency next year (and also for spring training).
  2. I wonder, with the increased payroll flexibility we all agree the Twins have at present, if they would be willing to trade for another team's bad contract. Specifically, I was wondering what people would think about trading with the Blue Jays for Mark Buehrle? The Blue Jays already have 15 players under contract for 2014 at >$110,000,000! Buehrle's contract is overpriced, at $18 million for 2014 and $19 for 2015; but he is having another Buehrle-esque year... 200 innings with an ERA in the mid-3's. He is currently 34 but he doesn't seem to be losing his stuff. His contract is such a severe over-pay that I can't imagine it would take a King's ransom to acquire him... maybe an 8-12, a 20-25 and a project (maybe less?).
  3. I pick them up every year... all the way back to the LaTroy Hawkins days! Buy them at the BA store online if you need the January fix, or wait until Feb. and buy it at Amazon and save $10! Picking up the newsstand issue with the AL Central top 10 prospects is also a must... unless we are the last division covered in January!
  4. I know it sounds crazy, but I think Buxton could have even had a better year! His only lull during the season corresponded to ~15-20 games after fouling a ball off his foot and losing his big toenail! That sounds really painful to a mere mortal like myself, but Buck still managed an OPS of ~.750 as the only 19 year old in high-A! I wonder if he has ever met AP?
  5. Ummm, Kepler's mom was born in San Antonio, so I am pretty sure that (despite being born in Berlin) he is an American citizen... isn't he?
  6. Does this sound familiar to anyone else... The Twins trade with a west-coast team for a hard throwing, 19-year old, left-handed starting pitcher in A-ball with a questionable shoulder. Trade History: The Pierzynski Deal
  7. Remember, lightfoot, that the sole purpose for a scout is to project how a prospect will do in the MAJOR LEAGUES. If the bat speed is not yet evident, he can't tell his superiors that he 'thinks' it will come because, unlike physical attributes, bat speed is not projectable. However, I am sure there are hitters in the majors with similar bat speeds... and even some with big time power. I would imagine that their path to the majors required them to develop plus to plus-plus pitch recognition and location skills. Once Walker starts demonstrating his mastery of these skills, scouts will then be able to offer some projection. High-A will definitely be an important litmus test next year.
  8. Not to make excuses, but... Buxton's CS yesterday came with 2 outs in the top of the 8th in a 1-1 tie ballgame. I am sure the opposing team was definitely focusing on him!
  9. Perhaps this is as good a place as any to have this discussion... as noted by jokin above, Buxton stole 3rd base twice last night. I am a little conflicted overall about steals of 3rd base. While stealing 3rd base is supposed to be easier than second, the overall risk is higher because getting a runner in from 2nd is much easier than from first. However, some players (e.g. Billy Hamilton and Ricky Henderson before that) are really able to ?padded? their SB numbers with steals of third. There is also a significant risk associated with stealing any base (e.g. jammed fingers) and my biggest concern for Buxton's development is health, so I had been watching Buxton's stats for a long while and this is the first time I can recall him stealing 3rd. Does this seem correct to others... can you recall anything from his time at CR SDBuhr?
  10. A September call-up might be a nice carrot to get him to forgo playing in the winter leagues, though.
  11. r.e. Meyer... If I am reading between the lines correctly (i.e. 3 K's looking), it looks like he was throwing the breaking ball today too!
  12. Thanks Mister B, knowing that Fangraphs has game-by-game results is going to make it easier to track down the stats I need (although that might not be a good thing)! Buxton's on-base streak is currently at 19 games... which is only his THIRD longest this season! His other streaks are 17, 22, and 27 games!
  13. I agree with you, Jeff, that Buxton always seems to be in the box score for something. Is there any (easy) way to find out how many games he has reached base safely in? He may have a 9 game hitting streak, but I think his on base streak may be over 20 games.
  14. Hey SD, what does a (presumably) tired-armed Melotakis look like out of the bullpen? Does he show increased velocity? -Thanks!
  15. Nice JO Berrios article in which Gary Lucas describes his outing and throwing plan for the rest of the season. Berrios helps Kernels blank Cougars | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball
  16. In yesterday's 'Twins minor league radio report', the Twins official said Meyer was back to hitting 98 mph in his GCL start, so that is promising! No mention of whether he was allowed to throw the knuckle-curve, though.
  17. I agree, facing 9 batters and striking out 5 (4 swinging) in your first start back from a two-month stint on the DL (likely meaning he was only allowed to throw fastballs) is pretty good, even considering the competition!
  18. Luke Bard and Zack Larson are now showing up on the E-ton web roster, can anyone confirm their promotion?
  19. I think this quote from the linked article says everything you need to know about how someone with 27 errors could be a great fielding prospect. If, as suggested, he learns how to 'finish' he becomes an excellent fielding MLB shortstop and if he doesn't he kicks around between AAA and the bigs for the next half-dozen years.
  20. SSS alert! One of the weirdest splits I have ever seen is Buxton's home/road games at high A... In 14 games at home (in a large ML spring training ballpark) he has a SLG of .661 and an OPS of 1.092! However, in 16 games on the road he has a SLG of only .299 and an OPS of .575! I don't know if this is part of the reason, but you could imagine that the training staff could make playing without a toenail a lot easier at home!
  21. Did he hit him on the backswing? If not, why wouldn't that be catcher's interference?
  22. While there are obvious flaws in his game, I think it is always important to remember that he would be doing this as a junior in high school if he were born in the US!
  23. And I even think you were referring to Jhonathan Goncalves (not Gonclaves)... no good deed ever goes unpunished ;~)!
  24. Why no love for J.D. Williams? He was on a tear at the beginning of the month in CR, and has already stolen 7 bases since his promotion to FM (w/ a .390 OBP).
