  1. I guess I didn't state my point very well... I just meant that SOMEONE thought he would make the major leagues. And that is why Jim Rantz has a legend, and you and I just push keys around. While I love the quantitativeness that is baseball, the mental side of it is still my favorite. You know… 90% of the game IS half mental (or is that half-mental)!
  2. I am not sure anyone ever said Puck would not make the majors, although I doubt anyone predicted his actual career trajectory! I understand that he was selected in a now-deduct draft, but the fact remains that the first time he was eligible for the draft as a collegiate he was selected third overall. Somebody obviously thought he would make the majors!
  3. While I understand that this is Vargas' sixth year in the minors, he has still only accumulated ~1200 ABs (which I think is a more important indicator than chronological age). In contrast, Miguel Sano, who I think we all agree was moved up aggressively, has already racked up ~1400 ABs in 4 minor league seasons.
  4. I agree… would a truly arrogant person admit that he has actually felt homesick at times this season? I am also amazed how well this young man grasps that his goal is not 'to be the best MWL pitcher', but to prepare himself for MLB.
  5. A bit off topic, but... One of the comments that completely blew my mind was that sometimes Hicks shows up at the park and doesn't know who is pitching that day! I would imagine that several people have suggested he take his craft a little more seriously. At the point he didn't take the hint, throwing him under the bus was all that was left. Where is the kangaroo court when you need it?
  6. How much under slot do you think the Cubs (or the Twins) could go in signing Hoffman?
  7. I have really been paying attention this year to Walker's at bats, and for someone who is an RBI-guy, he can't drive a guy in from 3rd with less than 2 outs to save his soul. It seems like he is striking out nearly every time. I sure wish we had heat-maps for MiLB contact!
  8. His statement is absolutely correct… was health of Buxton's healing hand NOT worse after the slide? Then how injured was it… not as bad as the initial injury. Aggravated is a adjective quantifying the current state of health, not the original injury.
  9. I can't believe you didn't lead with the Gardy-ism that Hurlbut 'pitched his tail off'.
  10. I know I am the 'excuses' guy, but when reviewing Meyers' start, keep in mind that he was pitching with an 8 run lead in the 3rd and a 10 run lead in the 4th. Who knows… maybe he ONLY threw his changeup!
  11. As someone who also only has sight in his left eye, I thought it was hilarious! I am glad I didn't have a mouthful of coffee, or I would have had a computer meltdown for sure!
  12. I agree… somewhat! Strikeouts would be great, but isn't his performance about what you expect if they are trying to limit the use of his best pitch (the wipeout slider)? I think after his last (great) start, he said he only threw a 'couple' of sliders.
  13. I agree with your pitch/inning philosophy, but would add that a 30 pitch inning in the 6th is also much worse than a 30-pitch first inning (which we Twins fans see way too often). So what happens if your pitcher has 90 pitches (or even 80) and you send him out for the sixth and he throws 30 pitches? It seems logical that efficiency would be inversely proportional to pitch number, so could you really be surprised? Or do you just have someone warming up in the bullpen from the start and ignore the mental effect it has on the pitcher?
  14. The MiLB article I read emphasized that Appel is not injured, but also notes that his FB velocity is down considerably this spring. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140426&content_id=73415214&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_l110&sid=l110

  16. Hey Seth... Please take this ribbing with the good-natured intention with which is was meant! So what exactly was Daniel Ortiz's line that first month in Beloit after he was your 'prospect to watch' in 2011? I remember his OPS was >1.000! And then he broke your heart (and the rest of us with you)!
  17. So you think the ideas of a 'slow bat' or 'long swing' are bunk? How do you think the average fastball speed at AAA compares to the majors (I wonder if that is known)? Not only that, but many MLB starters with below average fastballs are veterans who have lost velocity over time. Maybe instead I need to ask you to clarify what 'bear fruit' means... e.g. the player will end up with a positive WAR value for his career? Also, I think most of the players who are considered AAAA players are also poor (or limited) defensively, so that plays into the 'chances' they are given. I think Plouffe got extra time to figure it out because he 'could' play third base. Now, we might all think he is a butcher at third... but how bad do you think Chris Parmalee would look at third?
  18. At the risk of sounding snarky, correlations will not disprove the idea of AAAA players... the whole point is that they are the outliers!
  19. While the BA list is a ranking and not a 'predicted pick' list, #5 is Jeff Hoffman, RHP from ECU. Without giving too much the order goes: LHP, RHP, LHP, C, RHP
  20. Under construction BORROWED FROM A.M., who hosted Minier's page last year. German Amaurys Minier http://twinsdaily.com/webkit-fake-ur...E4DD/imagejpeg A 6'2", 200 pound, switch-hitting shortstop, Minier signed by was signed by the Twins in July of 2012 for a cool $1.4 million, the fourth largest international signing in 2012. He's 17 years old, and likely will shift over to third at some point. He's viewed as having plus power potential, but maybe not as strong plate discipline. Here is a video of him: Oh, and Seth says he prefers to go by the name German, as opposed to Amaurys. 6/22: Short-season start (finally!) update, Minier has reported to the GCL Twins. Last night he doubled and hit a 3-run homer in his professional debut. He batted cleanup, and started at 3B...so the shift may be sooner rather than later. Interestingly, his debut came in the same game as the other high-profile 2012 international signing, Aussie Lewis Thorpe, who started and gave up 2 runs in four innings while striking out four with no walks. As for questions about where he ranks in the Twins' system, I'd guess he fits into the 15-25 range. Gleeman had him at #22, and it is hard to compare his signing bonus to other high profile international signees, given recent changes (caps) to the signing bonuses. Safe to put him in the 15-25 range, with real upside potential for moving up. Regardless, great debut for the kid, we have been waiting!
  21. I guess I shouldn't have taken the time to look up how to spell his name! How about Amaurys Minier?
  22. I'll take Engelb Vielma so I can learn more about the next 'Wiz'.
  23. Sorry, but do you mean 9:00am or pm, which would be during your podcast.
  24. Hey Seth, why do you think Sulbaran (overrated, IMHO) will be repeating Low A ball... just organizational depth?
  25. What is your over/under for Doubles and HR for Little (or Bigger) Papi in the (relatively) more hitter-friendly EL this year... Do you think he gets promoted to AAA and/or the majors?
