  1. Sorry, didn't see JB Iowa's post on the main forum (please delete).
  2. [h=1]From Twinsbaseball.com Twins recall infielder Jorge Polanco[/h][h=2]Option Yohan Pino to Triple-A Rochester[/h] Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled infielder Jorge Polanco. In 72 games with Single-A Ft. Myers, the 20-year-old hit .289 (83-for-287) with 12 doubles, five home runs and 35 RBI. Polanco, who was just named Florida State League Player of the Week, made 68 starts at shortstop and one at second base for the Miracle. He will wear number 11 and is expected to join the Twins today in Anaheim. To make room for Polanco on the 25-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Yohan Pino to Triple-A Rochester. Pino made two starts for the Twins posting a 6.30 ERA (10.0 IP, 7 ER).
  3. I think there is an element of smart business practice in this as well, because if he gets hurt (again) he continues to accrue service time. I don't know if this (service time) specifically happened to Cuddyer, but didn't he break his foot on a rehab assignment?
  4. ...so what you're saying is that Seth is to blame for the Twins not starting Burdi in Fort Myers:roll:! Way to go, Seth
  5. Now that even Seth is saying that BA is over-rated, I was wondering if you could discuss where you would draw the line... Obviously, in the extreme of two players with an identical OBP of .360, the player who hits .360 with no walks is more valuable than the one who hits .240, but has a 12% walk rate (I know because of the AB/PA difference it would be higher than 12%, but the math escapes me at the moment). However, what if we compare a .300 hitter with that same .240 hitter who had the .360 OBP. In your opinions, at what OBP would the .300 hitter become more valuable? I understand the value of a walk in not creating an out, but I think the value of a hit is actually under appreciated nowadays. Walks never score a runner from second (and very frequently third), or move a runner from first to third. And if 30% of a #3 hitter's ABs occur with runners on base, a lot of opportunities for taking an extra base are missed by drawing a walk.
  6. Plouffe was also part of the 'Fun Bunch', but has now seemingly gotten very serious about his career. And there does not seem to be any animosity from the Twins, so I would imagine they will also be supportive of Hicks as he comes to terms with the fact that talent alone will not be enough for him to succeed at the highest level. I still think an outfield of Buxton, Hicks and Rosario would rival anything the Twins have ever put out (defensively, at least).
  7. After Turner got off to a slooooow start, I think everyone assumed he would fulfill the 'terrible' offensive role that was predicted for him (by all but Seth). However, since May 1 he has really turned it around. Not bad for debuting at high-A! He is not old for the league, so how well would he need to hit to make it into the top-15 or so? http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=turner000stu
  8. I imagine the Twins had 'assumed' either Eades or Slegers would have been fast movers except, to date, they have been anything but.
  9. It also seems to me that it would be easier to learn how to bat right handed (as a RH hitter) against AA 'prospects' than AAA junkballers.
  10. When was the last time that a pitcher cruised into the 9th with a 2 hit shutout?
  11. At one point I was getting really optimistic about playing meaningful games in September because the second half schedule looked so favorable, but with all the parity this year who knows what will happen Of the 66 total games after the All-Star break, 43 are against Central Division foes Chicago-11 Cleveland-12 Detroit-10 Kansas City-10 For inter league games, we get San Diego and Arizona at home for 2 and 3 games, respectively. Tampa bay-3 Oakland-4 Houston 3 Baltimore-4 LA Angels-4
  12. Correia with Pinto as catcher has an ERA of 5.91 over 21.1 innings (4 starts). Correia with Suzuki as catcher has an ERA of 4.11 over 57 innings (10 starts), which includes his 2 inning, 7 run clunker in April. I know this is SSS and not even xFIP, but I think the overall point is that Correia can (does) fall under the large bell curve that is an average MLB pitcher. In my mind, average is not a dirty word… but in no sense do I want to sign him to an extension!
  13. Old school or not, it's awfully hard to take a pitcher out who is cruising through a 2-hit shutout. You just might get the Jack Morris stare (even if the outcome is not in question).
  14. He could still get a promotion after rosters expand in September.
  15. A bit of a side discussion but, as one who used chewing tobacco for 15 years, I couldn't help but notice the prominent bulge in the bottom left lip of our own Byron Buxton in the Strib article. Let's hope he takes note of Mr. Gwynn's plea for players to stop using chewing tobacco, and starts a new chapter in his life today.
  16. ScottyB I could not disagree more wholeheartedly. I think the whole story from the Twins side is 'effort', and nobody ever questioned Torii Hunter's effort (the man ran through an outfield wall, after all). I don't think I have seen any complaints from team leaders about Hicks' poor on field results.
  17. If your kid is sitting around the house like a couch potato, and you tell him (or her) to go outside and play and they promptly 'hustle' out into the street chasing a ball, are you going to complain (or at least try to get him to learn his lesson)?
  18. cmathewson I know people love Hicks' diving catch last week, but here is how I see it: The Twins are in a terrible spot in center field. The Twins are leading by 8 runs (EIGHT BLEEPING RUNS!) with two outs in the ninth. Your best (only) centerfielder chooses to make a diving, WebGem catch. Your best (only) centerfielder sits out the next three games with a sore throwing shoulder. You might call that a hustle play, but I think it was as boneheaded as not coming to the park knowing who the opposing starting pitcher was. I don't need everyone to be as cerebral as Cal Ripken or Greg Maddox, but have a little awareness! While a little off-topic, I really enjoyed the recent Mientkewitz interview and how he felt he was actually better off for having had TK as a manager, even though he was 'walking on eggshells', because it helped him develop a thicker skin and be more prepared for the ups and downs of life in MLB (perhaps too paraphrased, but that is how I read between the lines).
  19. That is why everyone can make their own list! Just as a note, do you think people would have been excited if Dozier had an OBP of .312 in A+ ball? In fact, was anyone excited about Dozier when he was in A+? The numbers offer projections of whom is 'most likely' to succeed, and are not meant to say thatt someone will not succeed. Can you really fault someone for going with the safe picks? However, you (and ABWII) will feel a great sense of pride when he becomes an established big leaguer, knowing that you always held the faith.
  20. Because he has been so streaky in the past, I think we need to see him go into, and come out of, a slump before we know if he has turned the corner.
  21. Don't look now, but Vielma has hit .340 over his last ~90PA. While 90 PA doesn't guarantee anything, perhaps it can knock the 'unequivocal' can't hit down a notch or two. Maybe the Twins knew something when they convinced KLaw that he was a real prospect. That being said, I also think his hit tool (if it continues to develop) will be more like Ben Revere than Stephen Drew.
  22. Do you think it will be Slegers on (Tuesday) then to complete the 6-man rotation?
  23. Any chance the TD community could cobble together a quick profile for Newcomb?
  24. Hey Seth, I know you have talked about it in the past, but how about switching this to include 'non-pitching' contributions other than just hitting. That way we can single out a couple of defensive experts who also contributed with the bat in May. I am not sure anyone has reported on this yet, but after very slow offensive starts to the year, but both Engelb Vielma and Stuart Turner put up promising numbers in the month of May. Specifically, Vielma's triple slash went from .187/.247/.227 for an OPS of .447 in April to .347/.390/.444 and an .835 OPS. He also stole 3 bases without being caught and only committed 5 errors (only 7 total on the year). Stuart Turner started off the year (April) with a slash of .182/.239/.212 for an OPS of .452, but followed that up with a very respectable .273/.322/.455 (.777) in May. He has yet to make an error and is throwing out ~50% of runners.
  25. Wow, that is really bad news regarding Jorge's fastball. He may not have a specific injury, but something must be contributing to his decreased velocity. How was his extension?
