  1. Having him play some extended first base also seems like a good way to limit the strain on his elbow, which kept him out of action earlier in the year.
  2. Thanks for the link, it's always great to see the video! It sure looks like Sano has earned his teammates forgiveness for his previous lapse in judgement! In case others haven't found this out, you can see all the Twins affiliates MiLB video clips at: Video Search | MiLB.com Multimedia | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball
  3. It's funny you would say that, bp, as I thought the same thing when I watched the video Seth posted. I think for me what makes the two similar is that it looks like someone grafted a pitcher's torso onto Miguel Sano's hips!
  4. It will be interesting to see if, should Sano and Rosario be performing well at AA, they are promoted to Rochester for the playoffs. We could finally have some happy Red Wings fans!
  5. Seriously, you are really that worried about Sano using up all of his options? I realize you can find scenarios where using an option in 2014 would be deleterious, but Sano could also get glaucoma tomorrow and go blind... or be hit by a bus (or a pitch in the head)!
  6. I don't quite get the discussion of Sano and options... do we really think that we will be wringing our hands in April 2017 because Sano is out of options and he will have to make the team or be lost to waivers? That sounds very unlikely, but that is what it would take if his options were used in 2014, 2015 and 2016!
  7. One final thing is that Twins officials often talk about how driven Sano is to become a great 'player' and not just a HR hitter. For example, the Twins have asked him to sharpen his defensive skills and he has (apparently) gladly done the extra work to the point that no one doubts his ability to start his MLB career at the hot corner. The Twins have also asked him (and all prospects) to work on his English, and he has taken it upon himself to even do (some) interviews in English. I think it is fully possible that his 'struggles' at the plate in AA weighed heavily on him, and now that he is on a hot streak, he's just really, really excited! I also would not be surprised that, after watching the video, he did not realize the degree to which he stood up the pitcher and the other team. He may even be able to see the line he crossed, which I think is as much about his team still being behind after the HR as the grandstanding (I don't think we are even having this discussion if it was a walk-off HR, or one that gives his team a lead in the top of the 9th). There are a bunch of other Sano HR videos out there, and it's interesting to compare his teammates reaction as well. In the others, his teammates spill out of the dugout to congratulate him and give him high-fives. He will also acknowledge the bat boy and sometimes do a special handshake. His reception after this HR was very icy, much like the faux one Morneau got after breaking his long HR drought.
  8. Sano's BB and SO rates were 15% and 27%, respectively. How is that 'about identical' to Walker's rates of 6% and 23%? Plate discipline is the only thing lacking on Walker's resume, and Sano literally walked 2.5 times as often and still spent the whole year in low-A. I also think KLaw's comment about Walker 'not being a zero' comes through the prism of an overall top-100 list. I am sure that he would (will) put Walker in the Twins top-15.
  9. Yeah, it's really unfair that workout buddies have to defend themselves against the slings-and-arrows surrounding the other. It's not like just because Danny Valencia gets to hang with A-Roid that he will be involved in the Biogenesis scandal... oh wait, never mind. I mean it's not like just because Jason works out with his brother Jeremy Giambi that he is using the clear (or was it the cream?) .
  10. I know it is a bit of a straw-man, but one thing that could significantly affect your analysis is whether the pitchers mentioned threw in the Instructional League last year. I know there are not stats reported for these games, but it seems like a nice, low-leverage way of stretching out those relievers you planned to insert into the rotation next year. If you imagine it is like the AFL, pitchers could log another 20-25 innings.
  11. Sano on a 6 game hitting streak @ 9/21 with 2D, 4HR and 10RBI with 5W and only 6SO for a tidy triple slash of .423/.667/1.128. While it is truly a SSS, very few players ever have a week with an OPS of 1.800!
  12. It would have been nice if they would have added that the runs were given up in large part because the defense started him off with 3 straight errors! I thought he did a great job of limiting the damage.
  13. I liked your idea of a Restovich comp, so I went and looked up his minor league stats... Did you remember that he was a very highly regarded prospect? One of my favorite BA quotes was that Resto had '... light-tower power'! Look at these rankings: Prospect Ratings by Baseball America: Pre-1999: Rated #50 Prospect Pre-2000: Rated #26 Prospect Pre-2002: Rated #63 Prospect Pre-2003: Rated #37 Prospect As for comparison to Walker, it turns out not to be very good. Resto had very good walk rates in the low minors, and his SO rate didn't creep over 25% until AAA. In the end, Michael Restovich didn't become a big league regular, but I hope Adam Brett Walker can match his pedigree as a prospect.
  14. Walker has had another HOT week, even considering it started with a marathon 0-7 game! After that, he went 10-24 with 2D, 4HR and 9 RBI; which equates to .417/.417/1.000. As you can tell by the equal AVG and OBP, Walker was not true to his name and, indeed, that is the only thing missing in his resume. In 380 PA this year, Walker has only walked 23 times... well below the 10% rate most prospectors would like to see. For the year, he has hit 22 HR and driven in 88 runs (.286/.332/.560). He remains on the leader board in the following categories: HR (1st, by 7 HR) RBI (1st, by 17 over anyone not named Hicks) Runs (4th) Total Bases (1st) SLG (1st) OPS (2nd)
  15. Hey Seth, I know you have discussed Zach Larson before as a late round, way over slot guy, but do we have any type of scouting report on him? From the stats, it looks like he has good size (6'2", 185) and 5-tool potential.
  16. Yeah... all dem dere Norwegians in the Amana Colonies!
  17. June was a down month for Walker, and he managed an OPS of 'only' .722. However, he did steal 4 bases and got his SO rate back down below 25%. Now Walker is on another streak... Over his last 14 games (covering July), his triple-slash is .314/.362/.725. He has hit 2D and 6 HR in that time and has already driven in 19 runs. For the season, Walker is hitting .282/.332/.540, with 20D, 5T, and 18 HR. He has stolen 7 bases without being caught and scored 57 runs. He has driven in 79 runs and, with today's promotion of Hicks, you would imagine that he will be able to take a run at Sano's magic number from last year (100 even; side note, only 2 people reached this milestone in the MWL in the last 6 years, Sano and some 23 yr old nobody. David Winfree was the last Twin to do it in 2005). He is on the leader board in the following categories (NB, I have left off the Kernels who were promoted): HR (1st) RBI (1st) Runs (4th) Total Bases (2nd) SLG (1st) OPS (4th) Another notable placing (or lack thereof) is that Walker is 17th in the league in strikeouts , and well below 25% SO 'danger' rate (22.6%; 79 in 349 PA).
  18. Perhaps it isn't saying much, but the Scranton W/B group that Hendriks faced had more ML at bats than most of Gardy's Sunday-getaway lineups! This is a bit disingenuous because a certain HOF player was on a rehab assignment, but still harkens back to the earlier discussion about the purpose of AAA. Just for reference, the S/W/B roster includes such recognizable names as: Randy Ruiz, Dan Johnson, Brent Lillibridge, Fernando Martinez, Corey Patterson and Brennan Bosch!
  19. Doh, I meant the GCL Twins! Thanks Ozzie, it's good to see he is still throwing hard. I remember a few prospects never reached their HS velocities after being drafted (e.g. Tyler Robertson and Jay Rainville)... although that may be due to Twins-instructed alterations in mechanics.
  20. Any word on what his velocity was in his first start in Cedar Rapids?
  21. What a terrible time to let your ESPN Insider subscription lapse, but Keith Law has an article up on ESPN outlining the rising and falling Farm Systems, and the one blurb that is outside the pay wall is really all you need to see anyway! Farm systems rising and falling - ESPN Rising systems Minnesota Twins | Preseason rank: 2 The Twins have benefited from big jumps by several of their top prospects, balancing out the promotions of their No. 3, 4, and 5 prospects to the majors this year. I wouldn't imagine many systems in history could lose their 3, 4 and 5 prospects and actually move UP from a preseason rank of #2! Erik Karabell also has an interview with Miguel Sano. It's a little brutal, but I give Sano props for giving it his best in English.
  22. I would suggest that velocity for a starter and a reliever are quite different, as it is well documented that starters moving to a bullpen role frequently add 2-3 mph to their fastball. If you agree, another look at the starters on your chart indicates NO significant correlation. Sam Deduno - 3.32 - 90.2 Kevin Correia - 4.08 - 90.2 Scott Diamond - 5.40 - 88.2 Pedro Hernandez - 5.54 - 88.4 P.J. Walters - 6.03 - 89.7 Mike Pelfrey - 6.11 - 91.9 Vance Worley - 7.21 - 89.5 That being said, I certainly think it is better to be Gibson and throw 92-93 with movement than to be Correia and throw 90-91 with movement.
  23. Bruce Pugh and Madison Bohr each have 2 appearances in the 3 games the GCL Twins have played, any thoughts on when/where they will be promoted?
  24. The other nice thing about the 'Ignore list' is that it is really easy to click on (and read) posts by ignored posters in threads where there is a decreased chance of ranting... this is how I found out that jokin really has some insightful thoughts and is a very valuable community member! Just one more thing... does anyone know how to ignore posts replying to people on the 'Ignore list'? On a thread like this where someone replies to almost every post, I end up seeing most of the posts I hoped to ignore anyway! PS to Badsmurf: you had a really great run of posts ~6 months ago, so I admitted I was wrong and took you off my 'Ignore list'.
  25. I keep looking at the DSL box score, but don't recognize any names... does anyone else? We had (at least) Wander Guillen in '09, Sano and Polanco in '10, Felix Jorge in '11.
