  1. I just about start spitting out bile too every time I have to hear a speech from his supporters. Those who listen to...er, who knows who...and then tries to say that if you disagree with them you're a dumb sheep following the suave Democratic propaganda. By the way, I just love the way he'll jump to the argument of "You're using that as a last resort" when he can't think of anything better to say. It's so hypocritical in a charmingly agreeable way.
  2. Sure...it'd've been nice to not have to think about the Bill Smith years. I'll concede to that. And if we'd gotten someone better, maybe we wouldn't have all these entertaining Terry Ryan threads on TD to this day. But still, I can't bring myself to hate TR the way some (or most) people do. Sure, he's frustrating at times...many times...all the time...but believe me, every GM would and will have their bad moments and ongoing idiosyncrasies. Sometimes we feel like we need a new face, and sometimes that's a good thing. But frequently we simply find ourselves looking for a new face for the sake of this new face rather than for the actual changes that will (yet won't) happen. I wouldn't exactly call myself a Ryan apologist. It's just that my question is this: would a new GM improve things? And, if not, why bother? Please, please don't answer with a cliché "Why NOT?!?" I already know that's a reason. But to me, it's not good enough to justify firing Ryan.
  3. Left to right: Park, Santana, Sano, Vargas (backup) DH: Benson Am I doing this right?
  4. While Dave has a point, and I definitely would appreciate having an owner who really cared for the team, I don't think the difference it would make is significant. Suppose JP did go through GMs at a much faster rate. Would it be that much different than TR going through mediocre RPs? I doubt one GM would take off from another GM's work right away, and if they did, likely the previous GM set them up pretty good and didn't need to be fired after all. No doubt if this was the case, TD would be full of threads titled "Another mediocre GM," "Jim Pohlad's foolish gamble," "Pohlad reacts again," and, finally, "Ownership and the value of a winning culture."
  5. You're right, it's a moot discussion. And just because "everyone else" would do something doesn't make it right or the only way. I'm curious...would you be satisfied if we had five, ten GM's instead of one (and of course Bill Smith's short tenure, making it two) over the years, but the exact same record? Or worse? ...and all because obviously Jim Pohlad was trying to make the moves that apparently Terry Ryan is incapable of making.
  6. To Whom My Concern:
  7. Er...um...how about the Phillie Phanatic? His value should be down since they've got a new GM who probably isn't too attached to him yet. In fact, we might even be able to get them to throw a prospect like, say, Matt Klentak into the deal.
  8. It's made official: http://i.imgur.com/VdXPvlw.png
  9. Paul Molitor advises Kennys Vargas to lose weight during spring training:
  10. I spared myself. Still, one would imagine that in a few weeks these same commenters will celebrate the story of a Middle Eastern family desperate for shelter while coming up with snarky solutions to our current "issue with Muslims."
  11. Would Big Pelf have gotten this good of a deal if he didn't have all our secrets to tell?
  12. Don't worry Dave. Twins Daily's offseason doesn't coincide with Vikings Journal or Wild Xtra's.
  13. No problem, Chi. My mom makes the most amazing snickerdoodles, too. But if I have to name my favorite Christmas cookie, it's Russian tea cakes! My gramma makes the absolute best...but Gramma does everything best from including in-laws and grandkids and giving the best presents to being the coziest of all cozy sizes and wearing the best perfume. Haha...there's a reason we kids always loved her more than Grandma. Even her name was better. Of course, gingersnaps are also a favorite. My mom used to make those every year for skating parties and our neighbor would fill his pockets to sustain him through his wanderings. Unfortunately his pockets were never deep enough, so he always came back for refills. Can peanut butter cookies be counted as Christmas cookies? They always make me think of winter...in fact, peanut butter is in high demand right now but we need to use up that blasted almond butter first. I wouldn't want to try almond butter cookies. It's a most unsatisfying substitute. I used to love baking, but after I started making supper every day for my very large family, I always felt too burned out to bake much. Now that supper no longer scares me, I should give it another shot. Pull out those old recipe cards and see what we still have... Unfortunately, most cookies call for sugar, and right now we only have maple syrup and honey.
  14. What biggentleben said...and anyway, I don't think this is a good argument because it wouldn't take the ability to mark someone as mentally ill for the government to take control of our lives. And if you're only concerned about people being unfairly told that they couldn't own a gun because they were mentally ill, I don't know...anyone who wants a gun that badly just might be.
  15. You don't need to sound so patronizing. I was trying to keep it food related, and by the way, couldn't (and shouldn't) you do that more often than once a year?
  16. As today is National Roof over Your Head Day, I suggest that we also give thanks for the food on our tables without actually having to have the tables overflowing. Because, you know, to some it would look overflowing. Today it was roasted chicken breasts, rice, and glazed carrots. Of course it tasted wonderful since I made it...not to brag, but yeah, it was good. Too often I view eating as a necessary evil and blasted waste of time, but that's ungrateful and my outlook would be different if I didn't have platefuls of leftover food to put away every night. So tonight I'm grateful that I had not only one bite or two, but too many to count. And two other meals besides.
  17. As this is your blog I probably shouldn't be dictating the commenting policies, but if you don't want us to bring salary into the issue, would it be too much to ask the same of you?
  18. They have more ability than you or I. That can probably be taken as fact.
  19. I don't remember proposing that, but you're deliberately missing the point so I won't explain. It's quite refreshing to hear that you're the only person in this conversation who knows what he/she is talking about. And if sarcasm is immature, yuuup.
  20. Then capitalize it. I was referring to the general GOP attitude that we all need to be armed with AR-15s to protect ourselves from potential democratic takeover. That said, I've heard people say that our founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they knew how immoral our country is just a few centuries later. I suppose they'd get off their tummies and dance for joy quick enough when they heard the news that any crazy wacko is completely enabled (and one could even go so far as to add encouraged) to "protect" themselves and their people by opening fire outside of PP? Yeah...it makes sense to me. And hey, I think it'd only be illegal to try to moderate gun sales if they took away our right to keep and bear arms. Think of how difficult it can be to prove that you're worthy of being an American citizen, all to protect the people. Why can't it be just as difficult to prove that you're worthy of owning a gun, this to also protect the people?
  21. I'd care to remind you that the Constitution isn't the Bible. But since it is to some, it states that "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." I don't recall anyone, least of all myself, saying that guns should be completely eradicated. We're talking about safer gun laws. There's a difference. But if you really are worried about the government taking control of your life, I'll sit back and watch while you hash it out with the military. That's one fight I'm not willing to join in, gun laws or no gun laws. And by the way, sure, people may never have been given the right to own slaves in the Constitution, but you tell me how long it was before people were actually granted the right to NOT be slaves.
  22. CONSPIRACY!! The left is planning these shootings to get the vote! No, just kidding. But you have to be careful about saying things like that or you'll get responses like that, and a lot of people would be dead serious. Imagine if you were a politician...
  23. One could argue that reality just comes down to the masses sitting back, legs crossed, atheists waiting for an asteroid to destroy the world and religious groups waiting for a god to save the world. Which brings us nowhere. So, meanwhile, why not discuss solutions? And I'd like to point out that, for instance, the 13th amendment wasn't supposed to ever see the light of day either. If you didn't like slavery, you were just supposed to free your own and not worry about other people since it was none of your business and it wouldn't work anyway. And that's essentially the same attitude people like to take about gun control.
  24. He won't. His literal existence on this planet is a joke itself, yet he seems to take it all seriously. And yeah, he shouldn't get any favors. But CNN will pay it since he'll go up in popularity (sigh, America) if they don't. I hope the other candidates have some pretty snarky remarks about him at the debate. http://cbsnews2.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2015/10/22/16d2f87e-c9a1-4f8e-8ee4-9a69e55d020e/thumbnail/620x350/d877213cccc9a493a41ea190bbffda31/donald-trump-speech-620-getty-491877616.jpg Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?! I mean, he's a member of the superior sex, and I'm not s'posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?? //and by the way, as sarcasm is sometimes interpreted strangely on the internet, the comment about the superior sex is utterly and completely tongue in cheek.
  25. Exaggeration? I don't know... And don't jump to any conclusions about me, but I think that all the talk about us needing to establish safer gun laws without actually doing anything is only giving gun nuts motivation to set new sales records. It all started with good intentions, of course, but now it seems to be backfiring.
