  1. Thank god I haven't been raped or murdered, and the most surprising thing about it is we don't own guns. I suppose you feel sorry for some guy whose wife was seduced/raped/murdered because he didn't have a gun. Well, how about the guy who makes use of his gun to rape/murder his wife? It'd happen even if he didn't have a gun? Maybe. Dense argument? Well, it was meant to be. I'm defending a different stance with your argument. It doesn't work too well, does it? And about your "destroying the country" platitude. Just. Stop. Now. You know, if you're saved, you don't have to be afraid of death. But you still want a gun because it makes you feel invincible, immortal ... as if God's not enough. Right?
  2. Do you seriously believe the government needs a background check to take control of someone's life?
  3. As I am not suffering from knee problems (yet), mind. Definitely. I mean, not feeling sick, even when you are, is not something I think I want. MLB banned steroids for pretty much that reason. And twice as smart? I'm on board with ya. Anyway, I don't drink and I'm still young, so I haven't gained any weight now that I never exercise and still eat like a horse. When I'm 30 and regret the choice I made, I'll just have to look back over my accomplishments to remind myself that I made the correct decision.
  4. So because I'm the person who said it, it's not relevant? And you're not getting my point. I didn't justify banning guns because most if not all liberals don't want to; what I said was, liberals don't want to ban guns. I wish people would stop twisting it back to that. It gets old (you're not so bad, but there is a straw that breaks a camel's back; I'm sorry if I'm coming across as rude - I'm trying not to). If your "doesn't make it right" comment(s) meant something else, I apologize for my misunderstanding and would be more than happy to hear the explanation.
  5. In Sexual Politics, Kate Millett sums up marriage laws by saying (this is probably a paraphrase unless I suddenly amaze myself by discovering that I have a photographic memory), "Fortunately marriage and the people who make it are better than the law, but every danger remains inherent in such a law." I think you can apply the same to guns/gun laws as well. That would explain the shocking data. Does that mean we should just pass it by with a wave of the hand and say, "It works"? Of course not.
  6. On my way to a flute lesson this morning I turned on Classical MPR, and John Birge said he saw in The NY Times that scientists have detected gravitational waves. At first I thought he was going to say they found a nondescript monster wandering about the shores of Loch Ness, but it turned out to be more or less up your alley.
  7. I thought you got ten...?
  8. It's a lot easier to not have a car than it is to not have health. And I could say plenty about the "severely restrict," too, but I was talking about the "ban" part. It's my right, isn't it? I mean, isn't it kind of apples to hay bales, oranges to silos? Or, if you prefer a more or less conventional cliché, you're making a mountain out of a molehill. Or the Sahara Desert out of a grain of sand. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  9. Unless this mere acquaintance is the great Sherlock Holmes, I see no reason to ask for his opinion on the newcomers. And speaking of his opinion, I doubt I'd give a damn when it came to his ideas of trustworthiness until I knew I could trust him first. So neither. The man I trust the least is the one I'm with. Which reminds me ... why am I sitting in an empty bar with a man I hardly know at my age? How did I end up here??
  10. Let's not mandate car insurance, right? And it's the republicans who want the democrats to want to ban firearms. That's the closest I can come to figuring out what you're trying to say there.
  11. Maybe you'd like Italian fries. If you don't know what those are, it's basically just pizza without the sauce - you know, your style. Make a thin crust, sprinkle onion and garlic powder on it, and then cheese ... oh, and use less cheese than you would for pizza. No need to cover up any sauce or anything. And cut it like this: http://www.italianpieshoppe.com/images/photos-homepage/nov11-italianfries.jpg It looks like they folded the crust over the cheese and sprinkled the spices on top, but that's not the way I do it. The Italian sauce is really optional, and truth be told, it's better plain. And besides tasting much better than pizza, it's probably a healthier alternative as well. I don't know ... I just really like them.
  12. I find it confusing that so many people see freedom in not being able to buy a wedding cake, in not being able to use a hotel or public (public!) restroom. We have freedom of religion in the United States, yes. Is a restaurant a religious enterprise? Also, I always interpreted this freedom as being the freedom to practice any religion we want without being discriminated against (i.e. said cake maker has to make a cake for a Muslim or Mormon or atheist wedding, even if it contradicts their beliefs). It doesn't mean that the person practicing their religion of choice gets to do whatever they want in the name of their religion.
  13. Actually, my friend, agnostics are people who believe it is not only arrogant but ignorant to assume that we can know the extent of existence in this universe. So no, I wouldn't say they think they have all the answers, da di da di da. But yes, they're great people. Like, my best friend was raised in a Buddhist family but now considers herself an agnostic/atheist. Have I ever let that bother me or influence my respect for her? No, thanks.
  14. Damn you Vanimal ... it would be you drawing me out of a posting hiatus which was supposed to be much longer. And what a heck of a time I had getting back into my account, too. But y'know, I know exactly what I'd do. I wouldn't say I'm by any means attractive, but as ChiTown mentioned, the mere fact that I'm a woman does wonders to attract attention from the wrong people, people I'd rather do without. D: So I'll take $1,000,000 from the aforementioned wizard, live with the unattractiveness, send myself and all six of my siblings to our colleges of choice, and donate the rest. And then rub it in to said wizard that I'd gotten the better part of the deal. :3 --- Oh gosh, I better add my response to the first question too before Van tells me I have to. Um ... I'll watch the movie since I've obviously already experienced a first hand version of the bootlegged footage of myself, and since I also have access to the opinions on the documentary of my closest friends and family, I'll easily be able to find out what ya'll had to say about me. I mean, if ChiTown was one of those people, I'm not sure I'd want to know what her brutally honest take on me was, but then again, that's my own fault. But with the movie, rather than be uncomfortable and embarrassed, I could pick it apart and point out all the inaccuracies.
  15. Okay, I want to delete this now, lol. I got my answers and that's all I wanted, and the thread is definitely not contributing to TD. It won't let me delete it though. And by the way, I'm not using this as a melodramatic last resort or anything of the kind. Honestly. It might sound like it but it's not. And also by the way, the answers I mentioned are acceptable by my book. I'm cool with the way things work. I don't know how to make this sound sincere since I tend to be rude and sarcastic, but anyway...just believe me and please delete the blasted, obstinate thread for me. ETA: And hey, if you do, don't bother PMing me.
  16. Pfft, probably our brains get tired from having to remember everything for you men. She'll be fine.
  17. Sigh...my point is that if I'm noticing this happen, how often does it happen that I don't know? But obviously none of you are willing to make any changes...and that's okay. I should have known better than to even start this thread. It's certainly accomplished nothing. And anyway, you have sent me PMs over deleting non offensive posts before, even ones that were one of those chain discussions that Diehard mentioned. For instance, the PM you titled "'Idiot' post" back in June. Maybe the times they are a-changin'?
  18. One could argue that with any post that needs to be deleted, the poster should have known better and therefore doesn't need a PM, ever. And I didn't ask for an explanation...all I wanted was to be notified when a post is deleted. Idk, maybe Brock could work something into the system so we get notified every time one of our posts is deleted. We don't need to know who, you don't need to waste 30 seconds of your precious time, and everyone's happy. Then you'll never need to send anyone an explanation, except maybe newbies who aren't familiar with the commenting policy, and it would still be up to the moderator's discretion as to whether a PM was called for. And you could even give new members 24 hours to familiarize themselves with the commenting policy like SB Nation. And really, how many times do I need to say that an explanation isn't required? Like I've said time and time again, I'm hardly surprised my [paragraph, that is] was deleted. I was a little surprised that the whole post got deleted, but that still isn't the point, though I did stray to it. The point is that it was mere coincidence that I noticed it - and others - were deleted, and if I hadn't, I probably would've thought you were more lax than you are. If we got a notification for every deleted post, we'd be more aware of exactly where you draw the line and you'd have less posts to delete in the future. It'd be a win-win situation for all involved.
  19. I don't need a PM from him. I know it was deleted. What I was asking was that in future instances we do get PMs. And I'm not going to press the point anyway since the modest proposal has been answered: no, the mods don't have time to do their job. It's too bad but I don't mind since it's completely volunteer work and you can't expect anything from that, and for the most part you've gone above and beyond any expectations I could have of you. I guess it's just something I'll have to live with.
  20. I understand Diehard's post...makes sense. Except the posts I'm talking about weren't a chain reaction. And I've gotten PMs for those chain comments, anyway. And again, not always the case? It has been the past couple months for me. Are you admitting that you're purposefully singling me out and have kind of washed your hands of me since I'm not worthy of this site? Maybe it's always33 the case. And as for ChiTown's post...I didn't notice any such post being deleted, but if it was, too bad. I understand. Maybe it should have been moved though, since it was a good discussion albeit slightly off topic, but it's fine. Really. Back to the topic on hand, it would've been fine if you'd gone ahead and deleted the offensive paragraph, but why not leave the rest? You left Dave's response. But there's still a gap where the post was, so maybe that means it's still just hidden and you could put it back up but delete the comment about Dave's weight. Then there wouldn't be any weird break in an otherwise good discussion. Anyway, I apologized to Dave when I realized that people didn't approve, and he's cool with it. And by the way, if you don't have time to send me a PM when you delete my comments, one would hope that you won't have time to send me a warning when you see those comments recurring. That's all I have to say.
  21. I would never have mentioned this if it wasn't a recurring issue. It's not a real big deal, but I keep having posts deleted without getting a follow up PM to let me know. I've noticed this several times over the past month or so, and it's beginning to get a little old. I don't mind having posts deleted...it's part of life...but I'd like to know when they are. If I'm noticing this happening, how often does it happen without me knowing? If the mod who deleted the post would just let me know I'd be far less likely to make a similar post in the future. I try to be a good poster and follow the rules; I know I've had my moments, but haven't we all? And one can't deny that I've been good about not trolling since receiving a warning point. And believe me, there have been moments when I've been tempted to do so. I don't think this is too much to ask. It makes complete sense...when the mods delete a post, just send a brief PM to the member to let them know. They don't even need to say why or wherefore (though that would be helpful at times), but I think it would be common courtesy to just send out that PM. What would it take? - 30 seconds at the very most? And Always33, you don't need to jump in here and tell me to live with it. I'm not complaining about anyone. It's just, to borrow Craig's words, a modest proposal. It's reasonable. It's not like I'm complaining about how the last post didn't even need to be deleted since, if it really was that bad, they could easily have taken out the offending paragraph and left the rest. The second half was just the kind of post one would want to see on TD anyway...relevant, thought provoking, polite...this was a case of overreaction to be sure. But I'd still like to see a little respect from the mods towards the posters by sending a PM when posts are deleted.
  22. Yeah, forcing? If I remember correctly, they even made loopholes for Kim Davis, for pete's sake. Didn't they say that she didn't have to sign licenses for gay couples but had to let the other clerks do it for her? That was going overboard, I thought. But no, she wouldn't accept that. Unfortunately she's turned into a bit of a celebrity for her behavior. People who talk about how the government shouldn't make laws based on "figuring out who's feelings might be hurt" are generally quick to believe that Kim Davis shouldn't have to follow the law because of her feelings. Smh.
  23. Okay, I guess I can quite easily believe that you'd be hard on a new GM. You've been the same with Molly. I guess I've strayed from the original topic, but, since it's your thread, it's probably fine. You seem to enjoy a good discussion. But I guess I never answered the question you posted at the beginning of the thread: "Would you rather have an owner like Zygi Wilf or Jim Pohlad?" Um...er...I don't know. Pros and cons, I'd say. I personally don't care about ownership that much. But the point is, we both know each other's stances now, and obviously we're not going to convert the other, so let's just agree to disagree, right?
  24. Or "Obama hasn't done a thing to protect this country."
