  1. The Twins getting crushed is like a bag of sand pinning you down to the couch? No, that can't be it... Morbid curiosity.
  2. Pressley walks two, then throws a BP fastball right down the middle. What's a hitter supposed to do? They're not paid to miss. Just throw strikes and let the averages get them out. Ruth is dead!!!
  3. For obvious reasons, nobody talks about Unicycle Fight Club. Suffice it that the rules are simple, and the outcomes can be nasty. - Bring your own damn unicycle. - No attacking the spokes. - If you drop your two-by-four, you lose. Good balance is vital in UFC, as is quickness in the reflexes, strong hands, tolerance for pain, etc. Physics dictates most of the equipment limitations, such as the length of your board and the size of your ride. Meyer's long arms and legs would require a pretty tall wheel, but his reach would be impressive. After many early bumps and bruises, Meyer might rise quickly in the ranks, tho of course he couldn't brag about it. Oh, and no nails in your board, and it has to be reasonably free of splinters. It's a tough way to learn to control your balance point, but the lesson is unforgettable. All we need now is for someone to approach Twins management, then...don't talk about Unicycle Fight Club.
  4. Meyer still has a problem getting to his balance point. For a really tall, lanky pitcher like him, the balance point is everything, because he drives really hard just after he tilts towards the plate. If he's leaning just a bit towards the first base side, he misses wide left. Thing is, hitters can see that even better than I can. When Meyer starts having a problem throwing strikes, it's because he's falling off left. This happens early in his delivery, early enough for a batter to see it and not swing. Then he walks a couple guys. Then he pipelines a fastball. Then the wheels fall off. You could see it all happening like a bad dream. I'm sure Molitor has seen this sort of thing plenty of times before. Meyer still is not ready to win games in the majors. Go back to AAA, keep working on getting to that perfect balance point. Keep working on holding runners. No matter what else happens, that broomstick has to fall towards home plate.
  5. Gomez plays baseball with enthusiasm. I have no objection.
  6. You can sure see why the Twins don't want to give up on Meyer. When he's throwing strikes, his stuff is well nigh overwhelming. Mid to upper 90's heat that moves a lot, and a hard curve that can miss a lot of bats.
  7. Alex Meyer Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45. He's supposed to have a plus slider. Where is it? I saw a "get me over" slider and a slow curve right over the heart of the plate. Where's the plus in that?? Good heat, tho...
  8. Anybody else notice how quickly Dozier sheered off when he heard Sano yell, "I got it." ?
  9. More knuckle chewing. Come on Jepsen... YES.
  10. Free idea for your War of the Worlds... The aliens look just like really nice washing machines, invading laundromats all over the world. At first it was just a stray sock, some underwear... Then dogs and cats, then people... Problem is, they do such a nice job getting stains out, you just hate to tell them they can't stay here on Earth... "But Garth, that thing ate my grandmother!" "I know Lydia, but have you seen my bluejeans? It actually got the grass stains out. They haven't looked this good in years!"
  11. It's always knuckle chewing time with Fien in there, but he got it done. Whew!
  12. Suzuki's taking a handful of pain killers. Get ready for a AAA call-up....
  13. Sign me up for the John Ryan Murphy fan club.
  14. Rosario's got to quit being such an easy out.
  15. Gotta tell you, Park looks every bit the hitter that Sano does. He can crush home runs and he can get oppo hits when the situation calls for it.
  16. Berrios 1,2,3 on ten pitches. Nice. Last guy throws his bat down in frustration. Even nicer!
  17. Good job by Berrios holding Houston to one run.
  18. If sixty percent of the game is ninety percent mental, then Buxton should be fine within six months. See if I'm wrong.
  19. Well said. Bruno isn't teaching anybody bad habits. Young players develop bad habits on their own. Rosario needs to get MUCH stingier about what he swings at, probably in Rochester. Arcia and Dozier have to stop trying to pull everything over the fence. Buxton and Murphy need tons of reps - Buxton in AAA and Murphy in the show. Same with Sano and Park, though Park today looks more advanced than any of the others. I could recommend panic, and I must admit that's fun to watch, but for now I'll counsel patience. This is a young club where half the guys aren't even sure what position they're going to be playing next week. I have ordered a gross of chill pills for everybody. Please take one after every embarrassing loss. Compliments of Acme Placebos, Ltd.
  20. The initial presumption of this thread is mistaken: There aren't any quick fixes. The Twins are a team in transition, and you can't depend on a situation like this to produce consistently good baseball. In fact, the young players on this team already have documented weaknesses that are being eagerly exploited by more experienced pitchers and hitters. These weaknesses are not going to go away until our young players have time to learn. During that learning period, this team is going to lose a lot of ballgames. Fact of life. Meanwhile, the efforts of Twins management should be primarily focused on doing what's best for the future of the team, even if that means the Twins lose 100 games this season. Give more prospects a taste of the bigs, and be ready to send them down for more seasoning. Rosario needs to go down. Bring up Mastroianni or Kepler, depending on what's best for Kepler. Nurture the prospects, give them a taste, and don't worry so much about contending this season. Clearly it ain't gonna happen.
  21. Best Twins news of the season is Joe Mauer's comeback. Clearly he has regained his mastery of the strike zone, seeing the ball early and making tiny adjustments as the ball comes out of the pitcher's hand. Last year he was hesitating before he made the adjustments, with consequent failures. I'm in the combo camp; to me it looks like Mauer's recent success is part physical recovery, part going back to his original approach, and possibly part super goggles. Joe Mauer seems to have an excellent eye for figuring out the right way to do things. He has regressed back to his norm, which is a lot better than it sounds.
  22. Consider this batting lineup: Danny Santana (S) CF Brian Dozier (R ) 2B Joe Mauer (L) 1B Miguel Sano (R ) RF Byung-ho Park (R ) DH Oswaldo Arcia (L) LF Eduardo Nunez (R ) 3B Eduardo Escobar (S) SS Kurt Suzuki (R ) C Of all these guys, only Mauer, Park, Nunez and Escobar are giving professional at-bats. Santana cooled off post hammy, Dozier is clueless, Sano seems content to get lots of 3-2 counts, then do little, Arcia is stepping in the bucket, and Suzuki looks physically worn out at the beginning of the season, but he still looks better at the plate than Murphy. And this was a day that Whiffmeister Rosario started on the bench! For the sake of good sanitation, bring up Polanco and bat him first, bat Esco 2nd, and bench Dozier for at least a week. Then bat Park 4th and Sano 5th for a while. Park is a far more professional hitter right now, and he's quickly figuring out MLB pitchers. If your lineup is Polanco Escobar / Nunez Mauer Park Sano ... Then you've got good hitters at the top to get on base before the power guys.
  23. Once again, Nolasco right now is the team's best starter. Later, guys.
  24. One little tip for Arcia: When you hold your bat out before the pitch, hold it on the SS side of the pitcher, not at the 2B. What he's doing now aligns his hip too open, making his hip fall off too much. This results in poor plate coverage on the outside corner, making him use an arm swing on outside pitches. He just got a little wrist-flip hit to the LF side, but if his hip is coiled, he could drive that same pitch to the fence, or over it. See Mauer, Joe, or Gonzalez, Adrian.
