  1. Who was the manager that used to fine his pitchers for throwing a strike on 0 and 2? It was like a $200 dollar fine. Maybe it was just a story...
  2. ...And that's what a good right fielder looks like. Puig snuffs a possible Twins rally.
  3. What Colon is throwing is what I would call an excellent secondary pitch, a two-seamer between 83 to 87 mph, good action, well placed. Problem is, that's now his bread and butter pitch. As good as it is, hitters get used to it after no more than five innings. After that, they realize that they can smack the snot out of that pitch even if it's a few inches outside. At that point, Colon starts getting shelled. Interestingly, this could mean that Colon could still make it as a middle reliever. If he doesn't have to pace himself, he might be able to bring a heater at 92, then use his versatile 2-seamer a little less often. Otherwise, I'd say he's finished as a starter. 4 or 5 innings tops isn't sufficient in a starter, nor is one pitch in the mid 80's, even if it's a crafty one.
  4. Dang, Robbie Grossman is going at it full speed tonight.
  5. Can't agree. First, the 3rd base coach sent him. Second, Grossman executed that slide as well as he possibly could.
  6. They must have seen the catcher's glove brush a fold of Grossman's jersey. That's the only explanation that does not involve bribery.
  7. I can think of several reasons to like the Garcia/Ynoa trade. - Ynoa is a distant, uncertain prospect - Garcia is a decent starting lefty for right now - Atlanta is paying Garcia's salary for this season (really?) - Against NL teams, Garcia provides a legitimate hitter in the pitcher slot (4 reasons, his grand salami) - Twins have a very good fielding team, which helps guys like Garcia All this paints the deal as an excellent bet for the Twins. The team's D will allow Garcia to more aggressively attack the zone without much fear. If he collapses, the bullpen is already accustomed to that happening about half the time. If he lasts into the 7th or better, it lets the pen rest a bit. Heck, he might even contribute an RBI against NL teams. I was actually okay with Burdi for Garcia because Burdi might lose a few mph after another surgery. These flame-throwing RP's seem to blow out their arms with alarming regularity.
  8. Why Recker? I can think of one reason: Rochester may need another catcher very soon, when the Twins bring up Mitch Garver. :-D
  9. Pretty much same here. All these rentals assume the Twins want to load up for a Series run, which is unrealistic with this year's team. Otherwise it's far, far better to keep the farm intact, sell nothing, nurture your prospects, bring up a few guys like Gonsalves, Garver, Stewart, Slegers, Hurlbut, etc. See how they look in September, then reload in spring 2018. Guys doing well in AAA and AA should get a cuppa coffee this season. Let that experience motivate them and provide information for further improvements. Felix Jorge is a good example. He came up, had one good game, one bad game. Went back down to AA and isn't doing that well. I'm assuming that's because he's working on key improvements that will help him succeed later. Surviving in the mlb is different from dominating in the minors, where hitters swing more often at junk. Hopefully Jorge will learn to attack the zone and use his fielders to get more quick outs. Nibbling doesn't work in the bigs, ask Kyle Gibson. Meanwhile, Twins should stand pat with their system. Enjoy this developing team, but don't expect them to do much this season. The FO should be ready to deal Dozier this winter, move Polanco to 2B, Adrianza at SS, or we see if Vielma or Gordon are better next spring. We might even see Adranza SS and Gordon 2B, who knows. I do expect Gonsalves and Stewart in the rotation next season, and Romero in the mix fairly early. Almost time to shuck the lame old veterans for serious young talent.
  10. A-Bert's command looks a bit shaky in the first inning. ...but he got through it.
  11. Good teams hold off late rallies. Encouraging. The honorary Wheelbarrow for Your Testicles goes to... Brandon Kintzler!
  12. Kintzler v. Kinsler. This makes me uncomfortable, like a bad spelling bee.
  13. If the Twins don't blow this game, that will actually be quite encouraging. Good teams do manage to hold off late charges by their opponents.
  14. Well, I just vouched that Kintzler can be a stopper, not just a closer.
  15. No matter how hard I said, "curve, curve, damn you," Upton's drive didn't curve enough. Boy did he enjoy that pitch. At least the bags are now clean. So very clean...
  16. Has Taylor Rogers had his 16th birthday? He looks like a high school sophomore.
  17. Very good 7 innings from Kyle Gibson. Progress. I believe what we just saw was about as good as Gibson gets. Can he do it again?
  18. Gibson steered that last pitch to walk Kinsler. Running out of gas.
  19. I like Granite's nice, flat swing. Reminds me a little of Mike Redmond. A swing like that can get you a lot of low line drives, and a good batting average.
  20. Gibson has been attacking the zone with a great mix of pitches. That allows him to throw an occasional hook out wide for an awkward flail. When you've got 'em swinging, that's when you throw 'em junk.
  21. You could be right. Sano thinking about reaching 40 homers is almost as bad as staring at the left field wall before the pitch. He's got to take those walks, even if it means he won't reach 40 dings. Let's hope it goes in cycles. The hitting coach will tell him it's time to harvest some walks for a few games, then get some pitches down the middle to hit.
  22. I don't like watching any pitcher get screwed on great pitches to the corners. I can't wait for electronic calls for balls and strikes. That said, we've all seen Twins pitchers get screwed on those calls, especially earlier this season. Seeing the "luck" even out a little doesn't bother me too much. And then there's Kyle Gibson. See what I meant when I said he's got the stuff to dominate? This is almost like watching Gibson steal Santana's Zen mindset. He's throwing all his pitches for strikes, showing no pattern, and attacking the zone. Hey Kyle, when you're done today, give back Erv his little Zen doll. It's been missing from his locker for a couple weeks... ;-)
  23. If you're looking for an even trade, why send the Braves an above average, young pitching prospect for a below average, veteran mlb pitcher? The Braves are at the early stages of their rebuild. The Twins are still a year from serious contention. Trading Burdi (or other guys a couple years out) makes more sense for the Twins than trading Stewart, who could be a solid mid-rotation starter next season and under contract for a few years beyond. It's still a bad move to start selling the farm for half a year of service. The Twins ain't going to the Series in 2017, oh my dog brothers. But that Jiffy Pop of minor league talent might start poppin' next spring. I expect to see more than a couple more guys get their feet wet with coffee come September. We all expect to see Gonsalves, right? Today's rotation is Santana, Berrios, Mejia, Gibson, Colon. Gonsalves is better than the last three of those guys right now. Sleegers is probably better than Colon. Jorge will gradually get better, so he should go to AAA. We should see Garver for sure. Anyway, the Twins are still in the experimenting stage of building a possible Series contender. One year rentals like Garcia will not be part of that team, but some of the guys in AAA and AA right now may become pieces of the puzzle. Atlanta wants some of those pieces. I say screw them.
  24. "5.) Brandenburg Concerto #3 may be the most perfect piece of music ever composed." If it ain't baroque, don't fix it! ...I've been waiting for years to use that one.
  25. Completely agree. Garver reportedly is about the same level defensively as either of the team's current starting catchers, and his bat might be a significant improvement over either. He's also adequate in LF and 1B. Coffee time!
