  1. The most important line of the entire article in my opinion was: "Buxton's best plan for learning to hit MLB pitching is to face MLB pitching." There is no point in letting him demolish inferior opponents, at some point he will have to play at the ML level and most likely struggle as he learns. Might as well get it over with as soon as possible.
  2. Is it weird that I went to your link and my first thought after looking at the pictures was "I miss Robby Incmikowski"?
  3. If Arcia proves it on the field Danny Santana or Eduardo Nunez may have be seeing their last days as Twins. Too many talented outfielders in the organization to string him along (Kepler, Rosario, Sano, Arcia, Buxton). IIRC Santana is out of options as well and just might be a wasted roster spot when it comes down to it at the end of the day. But Arcia needs to show he can be that guy before that happens.
  4. Jepsen no from both a player and a team perspective. Jepsen is 1 year away from being able to sign a pretty nice multi-year deal assuming he pitches well again this year. The Twins for their part don't need to press and pay a guy who had the best 2 month stretch of his career (they have done this and been burned before). Sano, a very big yes. Although I think the numbers you put out there may be light.
  5. So far of all 6 of your candidates Escobar is the one I would really think about, and that is mainly due to the fact his replacement is 3 years out most likely. If he can put together a full year of success similar to his previous two 2nd halves as full time guy those guys in the minors may end up being the trade bait, not EE.
  6. I think time and confidence will be really help Buxton. I hope he is playing in nearly every preseason game to get the at bats he needs and to get a better pitch recognition against Major League pitchers. I think a few hard hit balls in the next few days will do wonders for him.
  7. I was down there a few weeks ago, and I would recommend if you don't get to Fort Myers during "real" spring training and are in the area the last few weeks of February still head down to Hammond. A lot of players were working out and doing drills, etc. There were probably only about 25 fans there as well so the players are pretty approachable as well if you are respectful and are aware they are there to work.
  8. I think Kepler has All-Star potential. Imagine an outfield next season of Kepler/Rosario, Buxton, Sano/Arcia. Young and full of star potential. I'm sure 1-2 will no longer be with the team or playing outfield next season. I don't envision Ryan trade Kepler. He tends not to trade prospects once they have proven themselves in the minors. That being said, if Kepler forces the issue guys ahead of him could be moved to make room depending on circumstances of the individual and the team at that point.
  9. Back to the original article: Maybe I am confused because of the title, but why do you think the system is broken? the Twins have one of the best minor league systems in the game based on what I assume is great amateur scouting. The next step is developing those players and you can have the greatest coaches in the world but 90% of the players will be based on their skill level and desire to excel. Coaching can only get you so far. The parts about not knowing if Buxton, Arcia, Vargas, Berrios, Duffey, Kepler will succeed is a question every organization will probably have about their prospects, especially once they take a step back in their development or stumble a bit. I don't think that indicates the system is broken. If anything having that many players in the organization who could potentially be boom or possible bust players is a testament to the Twins identifying young talent developing them to the Major League level and still having a chance to be game changing type players. I would say the Twins system is working just fine.
  10. I really like the Twins recent strategy of drafting collegiate relievers and converting them to starters. So far 1 has turned out to be a good pick (Duffey) while the others haven't exactly panned out as starters, they are mostly on the brink of making the Twins roster as very solid bullpen arms. In the Draft 1 out of 4/5 is a pretty good in my opinion. Hopefully Jay can make the conversion and dominate A ball and become the next super prospect in the organization.
  11. Or the fact that he missed one full month of pitching in the months before the draft and scouts weren't able to get the looks they would like to get if they are investing a 1st round pick. . . Add in the whole cloudy reasoning why he was suspended and I think that makes enough sense for me to drop in the draft.
  12. I feel like there is always a huge difference of opinion on Gonsalves in the boards here. Many like him (me) and believe he can continue to develop and become a very good major league pitcher, while others just write him off quickly because 1) he hasn't developed a nasty breaking ball yet or 2) because he didn't match his Cedar Rapids numbers in Fort Myers. I really don't get it, or maybe I am just more sensitive to the negative feedback on him compared to others because I do like his future. He is about 3 years younger than the competition in every stop he has made and in my opinion has been pretty great.
  13. I think the problem is the Twins haven't contended in 5 years, so over that time getting value out of guys was the way to make the team contenders by accumulating my young prospects. I find myself thinking the same thing as well instead of just enjoying the production on the field. I think/hope we are coming to an end of worrying too much about this and soon will have a very young team that is competing for championships with a core that will be stick together for a long time.
  14. I don't follow other teams farm systems nearly as closely as I do the Twins, so my question is do other teams have the layers upon layers of prospect depth the Twins do at important positions like Shortstop, 1st base and outfield? Including Escobar they have 4 Shortstops that could be Major League ready in 1-3 years and depending on who you ask around here, all have a chance to be above average. In the Outfield they have 6 or 7 guys that are competing for a spot in the next year. And then if you mix in 1st/DH type guys they have another 4 guys including the current major leaguers who could be ready this year to be contributors. Maybe it's this way across the league and we just put too much value on each of these players since we are closer to them by following them from day one, but it seems the Twins may be coming to a crossroads in in the next 15 months on who is going to be part of the future and who is merely an asset.
  15. Yeah . . . . I got a little carried a way there trying to make a point. But my point does still stand that a shut down reliever is important and I would rather have Meyer be that than gone entirely.
  16. I have to disagree with your sentiment. You would only want him to be an Ace starter or nothing at all? Relief pitchers all have to come from somewhere. What if he becomes a Wade Davis type of 7th or 8th inning shut down guy? The way pitching has become in baseball over the last few years stud relievers are almost as important as stud starters as starters continue to pitch fewer and fewer innings.
  17. If he turns out to be a #3 pitcher for the Twins for 5-6 years would everyone consider that a success for a #4 overall pick? Or are the expectations to be a #1 starter when you are drafted that high? I personally think any pitcher drafted out of high school who has a sustained major league career is a success in my mind whether they are a #1 ace or a journeyman starter.
  18. I know people with type 1 diabetes and yes it can be difficult and can put you at somewhat of a disadvantage in certain areas of life. That being said if he manages it and takes care of himself I don't see how have this disease will impede his progress to becoming a good major league baseball player. He has more medical staff and additional resources at his disposal than most people with diabetes. I personally don't think it was a "risk" at all.
  19. The other part about ranking prospects and following them is it is just plain fun. Now that I am at an age where many baseball players would be on the back half of their careers, being able to watch 18, 19, 20 year old kids develop as baseball players and eventually join your favorite team as a Major League baseball players is strangely rewarding to me, even though I did absolutely nothing to contribute to their accomplishment besides sit and home and read about and occasionally watch a few prospects play in minor league games.
  20. I wouldn't call the AL Central a weak division anymore. It only has the reigning World Series champion and back to back AL Champion Royals. Plus the weak teams in the division reloaded this year. You could see the last place team be very very close to .500.
  21. It's the Twins continually fearing young guys having a chance and failing. They seem to be much more comfortable going with a known commodity, even if that commodity has little upside. But at least they know what they are getting.
  22. I usually don't HATE MiLB signings, but I hate this move. It tells me Twins management is still scared to just let their youth take over. The odds are slim Quentin sees time with the Twins. However, he will take needed ST at-bats away from other players that will have meaningful time with the Twins at some point. I would much rather see Arcia, Kepler and Buxton get a combined 50 more at-bats than give them to Quentin.
  23. You're such a pessimist!
  24. You realize Kepler is an outfielder/1st baseman? Who are you confusing his name with? Rodgers? Also, mixing up names aside. Why is this convoluted to have a very hard throwing lefty with a lot of upside available to be in your bullpen? O'Rourke is dispensible if need be and Milone is a starter as of now. I don't understand what you are questioning.
