  1. so this means Bats in the Pelfrey somehow lands on the 60 day DL to begin the season? I'm good with that! I'm also fine with Hicks starting in CF to begin the season. They brought Hunter in to mentor, so let him start mentoring. If Hicks still can't figure it out, at least we gave him every opportunity. As for Santana, I hope he stays at SS all year. It's time to see if he can play there. If he fails miserably, we have another candidate to play LF next year, next to Buxton.
  2. I certainly hope Santana is our SS this year, & not bouncing around between the SS & CF. Find out if he's our SS, and plug other stiffs into CF for now. We brought in Torii to mentor, so stick Hicks back there, and see if he can get his act together until Buxton gets here! AS for Pitchers, none of those names on the list outside of Ervin Santana do anything for me. We've done the Correia/Pelfrey/Ponson/Nolasco thing, and it hasn't worked. I'm hopeful Nolasco turns things around this year to be respectable (something like 12-10,4.1), so anyone not named Santana would just be someone we need to cut bait on come late June.
  3. If the roster stays close to the same, I say Option 1. Maybe I'm seeing something that isn't really there, but I think Arcia can be an elite power hitter (not Adam Dunn), and should improve slightly in the OF. But to move him now would be a mistake. Like the early 80's, 2015 should be a time to bring up all the young guys, and determine what we have for a core. Trading or not bringing up the young guys, after you brought in Torii for a one year "mentoring/leadership/whatever" role, makes absolutely NO sense!
  4. It's like a child hearing something from a parent, or me teaching my wife to golf. If I point something out, I'm a moron and know nothing. If a friend says the exact same thing, in the exact same manner, it's like the word of God being spoken. There's some things that respected players can "coach" that will be heeded 1000X more than a coach saying it.
  5. OOPS. In any case, just like all the Latin players on this team, Milktoast is just TOO spicey.
  6. This to me is just fine. If he signs with another club for big $$$, god bless him, and best of luck to him. If not, and he signs here for a greatly reduced contract, with a promise to join the minors as a coach when his playing time is done, I'm all for it!
  7. I'm really hoping our management change means we WON'T be seeing guys playing out of position just to fill a need. It's time to put Santana at SS, and leave him there. Playing him in CF made no sense if we're looking toward the future. Buck is the CF of the future, and it's time to find out if we have our SS of the future.
  8. It seems most on this thread are dead-set against a Hunter reunion. If used properly, this could be a great signing. I keep going back to TK (whom I still believe to be one of the greatest managers ever) talking about getting Dan Gladden, stating "you need guys like this on your team." I believe he was referring to the "fire in the belly", which Hunter would definitely bring. We want to end the Country Club attitude that seems to have set in, and hearing it from a guy like Hunter would go a long way. It's a short term signing, doesn't block any young kids, and worst case, we get a competent part time OF/DH/PH. Make him a low-ball offer, and hope he takes it!
  9. All I ask for is socks. BRING BACK THE STIRRUPS!!!
  10. I hear rumors of another St Paul native possibly being added as pitching coach, in Jack Morris.
  11. I think Hunter would be the perfect addition, as long as the price is right. This would not be a "Bartlett/Kubel" signing, as we know he can at least still hit, even if he's not the OF he used to be. But I think Molitor could use a guy like this on the bench, to set the example for the young guys coming up, and someone who's not afraid to get in their face, and teach them, you have to play hurt.
  12. I'm happy for Molitor, and called for this hiring years ago. What remains to be seen isn't how knowledgeable he is about all aspects of the game, but can he handle the players thru the day to day grind. What drove me nuts about Gardy was he seemed unable to deal with a young player with attitude. They'd end up in the dog house quick, and stay there. I hope Gardy can get the young guys focused, having fun, and playing hard, even with little owies. What remains to be seen is if Moli knows how to handle these guys; when to coddle, and when to kick butt.
  13. As Mark Twain mentioned, "there's 3 kinds of lies; lies, damn lies, and statistics." This falls under the last. When the Twins were a perrennial playoff team, it wasn't because Mauer wasn't a large portion of their payroll, it's because they were all young, and playing well, in a bad division. Mauer's contract certainly hasn't helped matters since, but I don't believe you can blame him. Morneau's injuries, the pitching staff falling completely apart, bad trades, and the right free agents not retained, and a dearth of talent in the minors have brought us to this 4 year low point.
  14. I'm sure TR also knows that there's no way on God's green earth everyone's favorite Pitching Coach is coming back, so why kick that dog?
  15. Agree! This is yet another reason I was happy to see Gardy go, as this should've been happening 2014 (and probably 2013). Instead, we end up with another 90+ losses, and still don't know exactly what we have. Everyone agrees Buxton is the CF for the future, but Gardy insists on playing Santana out there, instead of finding out if we have our SS of the future, too. I'm interested to see what the young guys can do, especially under a new manager, but once again, it's a year longer to wait.
  16. OK, I'm still an admitted Joe Mauer apologist (haven't gone to any meetings yet), but i believe the question of moving Joe to LF has more to do with the upcoming IF talent. To say Joe shouldn't play LF because we need someone with high avg, great power, & steals bases? Last I checked, every team wants a perennial all star like that.
  17. I understand that the Twins have bungled several bench roles this season but honestly, it gets really tiring to see people use their back-of-the-bench decisions to invalidate the things they've done right this season. Good points. They spent money on 2 starting pitchers, and made some other good, and surprising, decisions . I think it was a risk worth taking on Pelfrey for 2 years, but for what they're paying him, he's a #4. If he truly is nicked, he may yet come back and be somewhat productive at the back-end of the rotation. Last year's signing of Chick Corea for 2 years was even more of a head scratcher that has them in this position this year. I still think they should've traded Correia this spring for a pitcher, of Mich Golden Light, while his value was still that high, and made room for the young guys.
  18. it drove me nuts when Gardy played Cuddy at 2B, and raved about what a great team player he was, and how he battled his tail off out there. Cuddy did what his manager asked, but HE COULDN'T PLAY 2B!! There should never be a time a MLB player is so completely out of position, barring late inning replacement necessitated by pinch hitters. Keeping Bartlett, and saying he'll learn how to play OF made no sense. Gardy manages the Twins like a softball team.
  19. Has anyone ever explained to Gardy that if both his catchers are in the lineup, and the one behind the plate gets hurt, that when the DH/pitcher spot comes up, he can pinch hit? This would allow him to get Bartlett an AB!
  20. Let's not forget hitting styles. Puck had that slow pitch softball mentality of "swing at everything", "never saw a pitch I didn't like". Joe is boring, methodical, and robot-like. End results are the same, though. Drives me nuts when people rip on Joe. The guy is one of the best hitters of all time, and after he retires, and a 270 hitter replaces him, the same people ripping him will talk about how great he was.
  21. I'd like to see Slama this September. Worst case, he does poorly, and the front office is right. Best case, he does well, and makes a bid for the team next year, or becomes trade bait. Signed: Steve Peterson - Full Season Tix holder
