  1. Was thinking the same thing about that Giants roster. It's not like they just got hot in the playoffs, they won all year long with a roster full of mediocre hitters. They hit less than 30 HR at home this season. Is Buster Posey that good?
  2. Considering the numbers A-Rod put up in the park with one of the shortest left field porches in the majors, I can't imagine that would translate well at all to a much more cavernous Target Field. In two years A-Rod is going to have to play first or DH, and there goes one of Mauer's positions. If the Twins were able to pay $1.5M or less, A-Rod could be a great part-time platoon/bench player. However, I think he'll stay put in NY until the end of his contract. I doubt even the Yankees would pay someone $20M+ a year not to play for them.
  3. If I was Carl Pavano, I'd be retiring this offseason. He's accomplished quite a bit in his career, made a ton of money, and has his World Series ring with the '03 Marlins. Hanging on for another season, signing on with a poor team for a small incentive-laden contract doesn't seem like it makes much sense from his perspective.
  4. Whoever wrote that in the transactions log was probably ironing the very shirt he was wearing while writing that.
  5. I don't see why a 2-2-1 series with the extra travel is such a horrible thing. I have flown on a plane many times before and it really isn't that difficult to sit in a chair for a couple hours. There's no reason why teams can't play on five consecutive days with two flights in between games.
  6. I concur 100%.
  7. I put together my own overall rankings of all 30 teams, based on 2012 performance vs. expected performance. For instance, the obvious surprise teams like the Orioles and A's rank very high. Teams like the White Sox that ended up better than expected also rank high even though they missed the playoffs. Teams like the Marlins and Angels which entered the season having spent tons of money on free agents and missed the playoffs are at the very bottom. Teams like the Rangers and Yankees who, even though are post-season bound, are still fighting to win their divisions with two games left and are ranked around 10th. I've put the Twins and Indians more towards the middle---terrible seasons, but ended about where people expected. Again, just my opinions. Thoughts? 1. Orioles 2. Nationals 3. Athletics 4. Giants 5. Reds 6. Braves 7. Padres 8. White Sox 9. Yankees 10. Rangers 11. Tigers 12. Cardinals 13. Mariners 14. Pirates 15. Mets 16. Astros 17. Cubs 18. Indians 19. Twins 20. Blue Jays 21. Royals 22. Rockies 23. Brewers 24. Diamondbacks 25. Dodgers 26. Rays 27. Phillies 28. Angels 29. Marlins 30. Red Sox
  8. There are so many new teams to root for this year, so for me, it's not so much who I'm cheering for, it's who I'm cheering against. Basically I'll be cheering for whoever is playing the Yankees, Tigers, and Cardinals.
  9. If we didn't have that extra Wild Card then the Yankees and Orioles would probably be playing backups, resting regulars, setting up their rotations for the first round. As it is they have to give everything they have to try winning the division. I for one like it better this year.
  10. I think Brunansky will be promoted. In my opinion, this fan base would benefit from a little injection of the glory days. Obviously the offense isn't really to blame for the poor season, so too bad for Joe Vavra. I would be shocked if Rick Anderson was among those let go... as horrible as the pitching has been, that's clearly not his fault.
  11. I don't think that any one of these three could have been predicted to the extent that they have played, but Boston's poor season I suppose is the least surprising of the three. I didn't figure they'd have 90+ losses, but Bobby V as manager never felt right, and to start the season with a couple of key injuries left them a little short of a playoff team in my opinion. I never imagined we'd see a largely unrecognizable lineup this time of year, though... I mean Danny Valencia batting fifth for them yesterday?
  12. I work for Callaway Golf, so I have to be interested! We'll have the TVs on at work all day tomorrow and Friday watching, I'm sure.
  13. Having relocated to Texas and seen the Rangers collapse in the World Series the past two years, I think I'd be partial to cheer for them to finally get that ring. But I would be conflicted if they were up against the Orioles or A's in the first round as I typically cheer for the underdogs. Overall, a Rangers-Reds World Series would be my top choice right now. If not that, then any World Series matchup that doesn't involve the Yankees or Cardinals I'd probably be happy with.
  14. With the Yankees in town, it got me to thinking about how I remember Derek Jeter helping the Yankees win the 1996 World Series when I was 14 years old. At the time, I was sick and tired of the Braves being in it every year, and recall actually cheering for New York, who had been pretty terrible most of my life to that point, to win it. Now here's Jeter in 2012, in his 18th season, and really showing no signs of slowing down. Every year I keep thinking he's got to start aging and his skills have to start declining, but he's in all likelihood going to set his career high in hits at his age-38 season! If a guy like Julio Franco can stick around and continue to be productive into his late 40s, Jeter seems like he could easily do the same if he wanted to. Anyone think Jeter will still be playing in 2020, in his 26th season, approaching 5000 hits?
  15. Very interesting, I was racking my brain and couldn't think of any possible scenario in which a baserunner would want to get thrown out stealing on purpose. Very heads-up managing by the Tigers!
  16. I agree. If they only wanted him to pitch for 4 months they shouldn't have started his season until Memorial Day.
  17. Check out completely? Never. Allow myself to miss a few games in order to focus on something else or a different sport? That probably set in in early August.
  18. Please put me down, as well as my wife Lauren and beagle Baxter. We all feel very strongly that Mr. Slama and his family have been wronged, not unlike the situation that Mr. Mastroianni found himself in with Toronto a year ago.
  19. Sid has the first nugget I've seen so far on the Twins 2013 preliminary schedule, albeit very vague. Sounds like the team will open at home April 1 (opponent not named), and will host the Brewers, Marlins, Mets, and Phillies in interleague games. If anyone has more info on the '13 schedule I'd be very interested in seeing it!
  20. True, but virtually all of those teams have hosted a game more recently than the Twins, which is also a major factor when considering the venue.
  21. Very interesting. In recent years Sid Hartman has actually had the first few nuggets on the Twins' first drafts of the upcoming schedule, so I would keep an eye on his columns. It looks like the AL East is playing the NL West, so I'd imagine the AL Central would play mostly the NL East next year. The Twins still haven't visited Atlanta outside of exhibition play since 1991, so that's likely to come to an end. I'm mostly interested to see what interleague matchups take place to open and close the season.
  22. MVP: McCutchen Cy Young: Dickey Rookie of the Year: Miley Manager of the Year: Hurdle
  23. MVP: Trout Cy Young: Verlander Rookie of the Year: Trout Manager of the Year: Ventura Hopefully Diamond gets a few ROY votes... Obviously a runaway category this year.
  24. I'm still rooting feverishly for the Twins on a day-to-day basis; that will never change. But it sure does seem like the more they lose the rest of the year, the sooner they'll make significant changes to becoming better. I suppose worst-case scenario the team goes on a 20-game winning streak and instills some hope and the core remains in tact.
  25. Turpen was promoted to Rochester in late July, and so far his line would suggest he has struggled a bit in his first taste of AAA. In 7 games spanning 10.2 innings, Turpen has 2 saves, but a 7:8 BB:K ratio to go with a 5.06 ERA. However, opponents are hitting just .244 against him. Truth be told, Turpen's numbers would look a lot prettier if not for a single poor outing against Columbus in his second AAA appearance where he was knocked around, allowing 4 ER in 2 innings. Either way, congrats to AA All-Star Turpen on his promotion! I bet we'll see him in spring training for the Twins next season.
