  1. For once I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet. They aren't getting blown out, and the April portion of their schedule is absolutely brutal. I assume they're going to finish off this stretch against NYY, TB, and BOS by being buried in the standings (5-15 may be optimistic) but from then on the competition gets much easier. Obviously the Twins aren't threats to compete for a playoff spot this season, but I think there is still some hope for a decent overall showing once this brutal April stretch is out of the way.
  2. Slightly off-topic, but this move reminds me of 1997 when the Twins abruptly acquired outfielder Darrin Jackson and immediately inserted him into the lineup before most fans even knew he was with the team. Of course in that game, if memory serves, he hit a grand slam and had 6 RBI or something. I have a feeling it's going to be that kind of Sunday for Clete Thomas.
  3. That's the power lineup. With Hughes batting 9th that's pretty solid.
  4. In my opinion, ditch Liriano. No one else is going to pick him up. If you want him back later, I'd about guarantee he'll still be there for the taking.
  5. HR Porch still applies during BP though! I never officially saw where his HR last night landed. It looked like it went onto the concourse of the third deck, totally bypassing HR Porch.
  6. The box score said he threw two pitches today, but either way that's remarkable. The second coming of "The Vulture"... Jesse Crain picked up 12 wins one season out of the pen doing just that. Actually so did Tony Fiore to some acclaim a few years earlier.
  7. Forget the Twins being the last MLB team to win a game. I was just browsing MILB.com and noticed that of every current minor league season in progress, every team that has played has won a game, from AAA down to A, from the Pacific Coast League to the Texas League. True, the minor leagues started up a day or two ahead of the majors this year so they have played about 1-2 games more. Regardless, that leaves the Twins as the only professional American baseball team without a win in this young season. That is all.
  8. I agree, I liked having Opening Day on a Monday with maybe one game on Sunday night to kick things off, with all the other teams starting the same day. It really was my favorite day of the year, and like all of you I would take the day off work and either watch all the games on TV or go to the Twins game if it was at home. I am just glad the Twins start on Friday so they have games on consecutive days, as opposed to the teams who open Thursday and then take Friday off before resuming the series.
  9. I was doing some light reading today on the history of spring training and came upon a question that I couldn't find an answer to. Apparently from 1965-1993 the Padres and Angels held spring training camp in southern California. How did this work--did they just continuously play each other all the time, or did they occasionally play college or minor league teams, or did they travel to Arizona to play other teams? I also read that in the early days, up through the 40s, teams trained alone in an isolated area. The Yankees were alone in Cuba, another team trained in central Arkansas... did they just focus on training and getting into shape and not actually play any exhibition games, or did they play some local amateur teams? Anyone who could shed any light onto this subject for me would be appreciated!
  10. I was at tonight's exhibition game between the Round Rock Express and Texas Rangers at Dell Diamond and was surprised to hear Yangervis Solarte's name announced in the starting lineups for the Express. I knew I hadn't heard his name mentioned this spring, but didn't realize he had signed with Texas as a six-year minor league free agent. Anyway, he looked really sharp starting at second, and belted a long 2-run homer off Derek Holland in the first inning. Too bad the Twins couldn't have held on to this guy with their mediocre upper-level middle infield depth. As a side note, unfortunately didn't get to see Joe Nathan pitch. All the Rangers major leaguers were long out of the game by the sixth inning.
  11. Kind of insulting not to be so much as mentioned! But that's good, knowing that Ken Rosenthal didn't even mention the Twins during his pre-season forecast has to take all the pressure off the team, right?
  12. AL East: Rays AL Central: Tigers AL West: Rangers AL Wild Cards: Yankees, Angels NL East: Phillies NL Central: Reds NL West: Dodgers NL Wild Cards: Cardinals, Marlins ALCS: Rangers over Tigers NLCS: Dodgers over Cardinals World Series: Rangers over Dodgers in 7
  13. I agree with the Braves. I also tend to think the Diamondbacks may regress a little after a surprisingly great year out of nowhere. Maybe even the Phillies, missing Howard and Utley out of the gates?
  14. I was in the 9th row behind the Tigers dugout. At the time I lived in Uptown and after the dramatic win I sprinted the whole way home in the rain, running off sheer adrenaline. I later met Rick Porcello at a trade show that winter and spent several minutes talking to him about the amazing experience. Even though he was on the losing end he agreed it was the greatest game he ever played in.
  15. See, that's problem #1... you're putting some thought into it! You just have to fill in that blank instantly with the first thing that pops into your head and not try to get too clever. For instance, a couple of my team names in recent years have been Redheaded Stepbeagle and Pissy Farmers. Zero thought put into either; neither has any meaning.
  16. I would be cool with him developing in a mop-up role in the majors, but he seems to be handed a lot of high-leverage situations and seems to fail frequently. If Gardy and Rick Anderson decide to take him north, I suppose there is something in him that can't be seen on telecasts. Maybe he's an amazing clubhouse presence. If the last bullpen spot comes down to Burnett and Manship, I sure hope Manship would get the nod.
  17. The only thing I differ with on your projections is the bullpen. Just a gut feeling, but I imagine the Twins will continue to give Alex Burnett every shot possible.
  18. Do or die for Doyle today?
  19. No-hitter in tact through 7 innings!
  20. What a slap in the face for Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes. I'd be demanding a trade if I were them.
  21. Note that the Twins have yet to score more than 6 runs in an entire game yet this spring...
  22. Doyle is probably on his way back to the White Sox with what's unfolding here today.
  23. Absolutely they/we have become bandwagoners! When a region goes 21 years without so much as one championship game/series appearance, I think it's only natural that fans lose interest and then regain that interest when a team recaptures some magic and goes on a nice run. Sure there are the hardcore fans that are going to stick through thick and thin, like those of us hanging out on this forum, but the casual fan isn't going to follow a horrible team. Winning makes people happy. Losing makes people sad. Why would you sit through a long spell of losing seasons unless you're super passionate about a team? I imagine people in Washington are probably on the same level as Minnesotans, while Bostonians will never get labeled as bandwagoners these days due to so much success across the board.
  24. Very cool! I must say I am pretty jealous of her. I wonder if it would actually get old waking up every day knowing you had to watch 15 games? Somehow I doubt it.
  25. Thanks for posting this! I too am interested to see if anything ever came of this documentary. There is virtually nothing on the topic online aside from articles previewing the show. At this point I'm guessing it never happened, or it was only broadcast locally in upstate New York.
