    Esoteric Ball Guy, sounds like a great week of baseball. I'm more of a homer, we will catch the 3 games at home against the Brewers this weekend and then head to Pittsburgh for the three games against the Pirates. Then drive to Cincinnati on Friday morning and we will see both the Friday night game and the Saturday game against the Reds before flying home on Sunday afternoon. I've been looking forward to this week since January. I've never been to PNC or Great American Ballpark and interested to see how they compare to Target Field. Have a great week and maybe we will see you in Pittsburgh or Cincy.

    Right now the Gio Gonzalez trades looks like a steal for the Nat's but that is because he is tearing up the NL and the guys on the other end of the trade haven't made their mark yet. Here is what was said when the trade was announced last December. In exchange for Gonzalez, a 26-year-old who has won 15-plus games and thrown 200-plus innings in each of the past two seasons, the Nationals are giving up three pitching prospects — right-handers Brad Peacock and A.J. Cole, and lefty Tommy Milone — plus catching prospect Derek Norris. Peacock, Cole and Norris ranked third, fourth and ninth, respectively, in Baseball America’s recent list of the Nationals’ top prospects. Gonzalez, a first-time all-star in 2011, is not without flaws. A power arm who ranked fourth in the American League in 2011 with 8.78 strikeouts per nine innings, he also led the league in walks, with 91, a year after finishing second with 90. It also appears he benefited from pitching in Oakland’s cavernous Coliseum the past four seasons, recording a career ERA of 3.56 at home versus 4.32 on the road. Would you be willing to give up the Twins 3rd, 4th and 9th best prospects for a guy that has walked 90 and 91 batters the previous two seasons? Right now it looks like a one-sided trade for the Nationals, but you have to look back 8 or 10 years to really appreciate the value traded.

    The softball game will take place after the Brewers take batting practice. Probably in the 12:15 to 12:45 range. If you want a specific time, I would just call the Twins. I'm sure they will give you a specific time. all of the pre-game stuff is planned to get us to first pitch at 1:10.

    We still have the worst record in the AL. We have pulled even with KC at 24 wins. I think we can play .500 ball for the rest of the season and end up with 76 wins. I think that makes us sellers. Winning at an 80% clip isn't going to happen with this pitching staff.

    I couldn't disagree more. Baseball is a game of numbers, the more you sign the more likely you will get someone special. Even the first rounders are a 50/50 chance of making it to the majors, the odds decrease as you move down the rounds, but there will be major leaguers taken this year in rounds 10 and below. The good organizations are the ones that are able to not only draft them, but also sign them, give the a chance to progress and coach them along the way. The quickest route to a failed organization is to stop sending money to sign talent. The second quickest route is to only sign your first 10 picks, thinking the other guys don't have a chance. I don't have the number in front of me, but how many on our current 40 man roster were drafted after the 10th round or not drafted at all?

    My thoughts exactly. It will be years before we see Buxton in Minnesota. Span's future is more dependent on his own performance and that of the the Twin's win/lose record. Benson, Hicks and the rest are not close to a current level of play that could replace Span at the major league level. I also agree that TR does not view this team as in rebuilding mode. As a GM you can't. I can see him trading some assets away to acquire some starting pitching for next year, but in no way can think that TR has given up on 2013, 2014 and already slotted them as rebuilding years.

    How many of these players are going to sign? I know it looked like we drafted with an eye towards signability, but realistically how many of these top 18 picks will join the organization? Will the change in signing period and slot amounts (signing salary cap) have much affect on who and how quickly we sign players? This is really looking like the changes will have far reaching affects for both the organization and the players. It will be interesting to see how our signing percentage this year will differ from the past few years. Then again, the changes in our signing percentage this year may change more due to the number and quality of our picks rather than the changes in the signing process.

    I think the strategy is to draft good arms. Regardless of how they were used in college or High school. If they kid has a good arm, we can use them. I wouldn't get too worked up about the lack of starting experience.

    None of us has seen him pitch. You have to trust the scouts we have and realize that he isn't going to be pitching for the Twins for many years. Young arms need a lot of time to develop. They must be very high on his talent.

    I'm with you. That was a great decision. I don't think we lost much in essentially trading Cuddy for the hammer, for less money and then throw in a young pitcher. This is what a GM is supposed to do.

    There aren't many teams that can afford to just throw away a first round pick. The Pirates certainly aren't one of them.

    The only players currently on our roster that will remain in 2014 are Mauer and Dozier. Span will be traded for pitching and to make room for our abundance of young outfielders. I think both Bennie and Plouffe will have a shot to earn spots but I don't think Plouffe will show enough during the rest of this season to make 2013's roster, let alone 2014. I hope Revere keeps hitting and will turn into an every day player for us, but I would put his chances at less than 25% for 2014. As far a pitching goes, I see Perkins still in a Twin's uniform and Diamond, Walters and Hendricks all have a shot, but again less than 25%. We will see a lot of new faces next season and then in 2014 we will have essentially a whole new team.

    Exactly! Plouffe is not an infielder. If we are going to give him a chance, give him some consistent playing time in the outfield. I think Bennie also deserves a chance to play everyday. I wouldn't be surprised to see Span, Doumit and the Hammer all traded for some pitching. I think the market will heat up as the trade deadline approaches. The real question is who will earn a spot on the opening day 2014 roster? Other than Mauer, who will still be around in 2014? Dozier is the next most likely to still be on the team. Other than those two, I really don't see anyone with a better than 50% chance of still being around in 2 years. I think Terry plans to clean house. Every position will be replaced by youth inside the organization or in some cases a select veteran free agent signing, where we don't have any internal options available.

    3 for 20 in his last 5 games with more than a few fielding blunders. This is a perfect time for a day off to regroup. With our pitching, we really need his glove in the field everyday making plays.

    What a mess. I think at this point, we should have 5 starters, 5 guys in long relief and then Perkins and Capps. Not enough pitching? how about 10 long relief guys?

    So with Doumit out for the weekend, or at least not starting this weekend does Joe Catch all three games? Do we give one start to Butera and then start Joe at first or give him the day off? How does this affect Justin at first? I'm leaning towards and think Gardy will have Joe start all three games, starting one of those at first to give Justin the day off. Hopefully Doumit will only miss this series as his injury really limits the flexibility of our already limited roster.
