  1. Than you should be happy as I would consider Worley a legitimate #3.
  2. Parmelee only has to handle RF this season (or possible just the 1st half). We've seen that he can handle 1B which will be his primary position when Morneau departs. What he has to prove is that he can be an offensive asset like he showed in the minors and his brief stint in 2011. Hopefully with regular playing time he can do that.
  3. I agree. Based on GDP, Miguel Cabrera is the worst hitter in baseball. All the GDP tells you is that the batter puts the ball in play a lot. Mauer has a low K rate and gets out 67% of the time so that means that he puts the ball in play a lot. Over his career, Mauer has 3933AB, 1270H, 475K and 130 GDP. Which means he grounded into a DP 130 times out of the 2188AB where he put the ball in play to record an out. Less than 6% of his non strikeout outs resulted in a DP. What a terrible hitter.
  4. I think that they will be competitive in 2014 and 2015 as the prospects get their feet wet, but 2016 would be the earliest that the could be truly considered contenders.
  5. Pelfrey is a veteran and is basically in the same boat as Baker. Pelfrey's TJ surgery was only 2 weeks after Baker's. So if the Twins expected Baker to be ready by opening day there is no reason Pelfrey won't be. Also since Pelfrey is a 5+ year veteran he won't have the innings restrictions as the rookie Gibson.
  6. While Doumit is listed as catcher and can play the position, he is a DH and is more the emergency Catcher instead of a back up catcher.
  7. They aren't nickel and dimeing Duensing and Butera. Since they are only signing them to 1 year deals, they just haven't negotiated with them as there has been no need to yet. I don't believe the Twins' have submitted their offers yet for arbitration. I'm willing to bet that both players will be signed long before their arbitration hearings come up. The only Arb. player the Twins dealt with was Burton and the only reason they did that early was because the gave him a multiyear deal.
  8. Gardy rarely skips pitchers. The fifth starter would start every 5th game just like the #1 starter.
  9. I think that this is the worst thing that you can do to Gibson. But putting him in the BP he loses arm strength and it messes with his routine as he has no idea if/when he is going to pitch. With all reports of him being on a 140-150 innings limit, by letting him pitch in AAA you can better control his innings limit without killing your bullpen. You let him pitch 4-5 innings/start for 2 months (10 starts), then when you bring him up in June he can still have 100 innings remaining and can go 5-6 innings out of the gate. That way he can stay in his routine of pitching every 5th game.
  10. First the $26.6M was operating income not profit and it was for the 2010 season when the Twins still receive profit sharing revenue. The next year the operating income dropped to $16M.
  11. First, unless you are their accountant you don't know that. 2nd, Forbes disagrees with you. In 2011 they had an operating income of $16M which isn't net profit but let's assume that it is which would mean that they would've been in the red with a payroll of around $128M.
  12. First, Detroit isn't making a profit. According to Forbes their operating revenue has been in the red the last few years. Second, Carl Pohlad has already won 2 WS titles so he wasn't as desperate as Ilitch. Hopefully at some point Jim wants to create his own legacy and not just bask in Carl's. That being said of course I would like the Twins' to open the purse strings and spend some more money on quality players. I would like the payroll to be around $100M.
  13. As Ultimo said, Blackburn is not on the 40-man roster, but if he was there is no DL (15 day or 60 day) until the end of ST.
  14. Detroit has an ulterior motive. It's owner Mike Ilitch is desperate to get a WS title before he dies. He has won 4 Stanley Cups in the 30 years that he has owned the Red Wings.
  15. Almost all of them.
  16. I don't know the full details, but this year Cuban players are treated as Free Agents instead of International Signings.
  17. It's one thing to expect prospects/rookies to contribute, but it appears that the Twins' expect them all to perform at ROY levels. As has been mentioned before, the core of the '87 championship team began their careers in '82. It took a few years of playing together to finally gel into a complete club.
  18. From what I hear, there really isn't much added value based on his HR performance the last 2 years. It seems that most teams feel that they were flukes as is so a drop to the norm wouldn't affect anything anyway.
  19. I agree. I was expecting 20-25 dingers from Willingham. Anything more than that is a bonus. I expect the same again in 2013.
  20. If I were to vote for one of the alleged cheaters (Bonds or Clemens), I would vote for Clemens 1st. The reason being is that I believe that beginning of his alleged PED use happened in New York. His 5 CY awards in Boston and Toronto are more than enough qualifications for the HOF.
  21. Since he only went up 1% of last year and with Maddux and Glavine on the ballot next year I don't see Morris gain the 43 votes need to get in.
  22. This isn't a valid argument for 3 reasons: 1. The Twins will receive $25M more in broadcast revenue starting in 2014. That is more then enough to compensate Marcum for the last 2 years of his contract. 2. Morneau is a FA after 2013 and the Twins are most likely not going to re-sign him and he will be most likely be replaced by a rookie making league minimum so that is another $13.5M available for Marcum. 3. The Twins are currently $20M below last years payroll and there aren't many players due raises next year so they'll still have plenty of money to afford Marcum's multiyear deal.
  23. I'll add to this by saying that Gardy's main weakness is the inability to adapt to the urgency that is present in the postseason. He establishes roles for all of his players and that works for the long haul of the regular season. His ability to adjust from those established roles in the postseason has been his downfall (that and the players inability to perform in the postseason).
  24. I agree that league average is a lofty goal for the starting staff coming off of a league worst 5.40. They had a 4.64 in 2011 and a 4.17 in 2010. I'd be satisfied with the 940 innings and a 4.50ish ERA. That would be still be a 60 run improvement of 2012.
  25. If the Twins do nothing the remainder of the offseason, the 2013 payroll will be $80M. If you expected the payroll to be the same as last year, that means they have $20M left to spend.
