  1. ABW is a different case in general. He might have been the best power hitter in college, but he wasn't the best college hitter. He had huge holes in his swing and a penchant to swing a bit too much. Rooker is much more patient, hits for a high average, and take a walk.. He's a more mature hitter. I agree that ABW was frustrating, but it wasn't hard to see why he was staying down... On to Rooker, I wouldn't be too concerned if he got a wood bat tune up in the Appy, but I tend to agree that if lasts more than a couple weeks, then something is wrong. He should finish the season in Fort Myers at the very least.
  2. It does actually... and your 40 man roster in this scenario. Every guy that goes up means someone below goes up and someone above gets DFAd. These aren't decisions that get made on a whim, and they are often made after the draft/minor league ASB for that reason. I do not get the consternation about bringing Gonsalves up after a few starts (several of which were not impressive) after being out for a couple months due to injury. He will come up eventually, and a couple more starts until the org is ready for this is hardly going to be detrimental to anything but our patience.
  3. I would add that his control has been shaky at times. His stuff is good enough to get AA hitters out regardless. That walk rate (up until yesterday) was a bit high and he had one start recently where he was barely over 50% of his pitches for strikes. That was a knock coming into AA last year and an issue that was complicated by a long layoff due to shoulder issues. He's got 34 innings... not enough to cry about yet. He will be one of the ones moved up to Rochester once they make the mid season moves. I'm not worried about that as I don't see him in Minnesota except for a September cup of coffee.
  4. The problem is that there was no BPA. I don't think I can emphasize enough. I grow rather tired of people saying 'pick the BPA' when there's no consensus there. Go read the draft thread, and for that matter, all of the experts. They had different opinions. The one thing that was obvious is that no one agreed as to who said BPA was, which tells you just how subjective it is. I have no doubt the Twins had Lewis on the top of their board with McKay. They took the one that would net them better talent further down the draft. They effectively walked away with (on their board) a top 2 overall talent, a top 15-20 overall talent, and two guys in their top 30. That's 3-4 first round picks (the latter of whom have a much better chance of making the majors then their draft position indicates) because they played those games. Overall, the added more talent at the expense of a clear need, which ultimately means more BPAs with this strategy than going the other way. I'm not liking the expense of a clear need issue, but if they took McKay at 1, there's no way they end up with Enlow at 4 (who I might add also fits the same need, just on a longer term trajectory) as well as one of those HS guys they took later on day 2.
  5. Have we forgotten just how good 2016 Gordon was through August of last year? He tailed off at the end of the season but maintained an OPS over .800 for most of it... in a league tough on hitters. I think we tend to look a bit too closely at his season stats and not recognize that he was really good for all but the last month or so of the year. To me, that's a kid wearing down, not necessarily a demerit on his performance.
  6. I tend to agree. I'd also bet Enlow was in their top 15... just something to think about.
  7. well, perhaps it explains the signing a bit more. Understand that there's more to a pitcher than a curve ball spin rate, but they feel that this is essential and the other items can be fixed so to speak... you may fail on some of them, but you are more likely to succeed with the overall process. That's how I read it at least.
  8. So is Thorpe on a strict pitch limit? He was pulled after 4 pretty strong innings and only 68 pitches.
  9. Buxton got scared b/c I suggested he needed time in AAA... that's what it is So.... send him down... Let's see if it keeps working.
  10. Likely a backup plan in case they have some extra money.
  11. I tend to agree. I think they really liked Leach and had a couple guys Enlow/Carlson that they were willing to let drop. Not many teams had the bandwidth to sign them all at that point. Edit: I'd add that if they don't have extra money, they had no plans of getting both.
  12. I understand that. It's a question about what is best for Buxton as well.
  13. A .645 OPS and 31% K rate is nothing write home about. It's still below average. I'll grant you that from April to May, he improved... If he's improving from May to June, I'd tend to agree that you might be right in keeping him up, but it seems as though he's regressed a bit lately. Maybe I'm wrong there, and I'd like to be.
  14. And he's playing less and less because he cannot hit. He was off against Berrios and off again yesterday. I understand the desire to see him, but it isn't necessarily best for Buxton to keep him up while his hit tool continues to border somewhere between terrible and well below average.
  15. We grabbed an HS kid in 11 (not top 200), but those moves are definitely in hopes of getting one or two higher ceiling guys to sign away college if they can throw enough money at them. Hoping we can get at least 1 HS guy that way.
  16. I don't agree with either of these statements. He can certainly learn things about hitting in AAA, and what is really hard is trying to get him into good habits when he's pressing and letting MLB pitching exploit him. His problem right now is his approach, and win now mode doesn't exactly lend itself to improving his approach. AAA has values beyond the stat lines, and I have a tough time believing Buxton is above replacement level right now.
  17. yeah, I don't think cheap is the right option. I'm guessing they had Enlow targeted from day 1 as they saw him as mid first round talent and were willing to offer him more than what he was going to get otherwise. He responds by having high bonus demands which scare away other teams knowing the Twins are going to give him 2+M, essentially pricing himself out of where he would have normally been drafted. The Twins then look at their BPAs and have about 5 names that they really like and simply leverage them against each other and take the guy who gives them the lowest dollar amount. They walk out with a top 5 talent in the draft and probably a top 20 (on their list at least) effectively giving them 2 first rounders. I think a few of us (myself included) maintained that this was a good strategy absent a clear BPA at the top. There's zero question based on the debate we saw here that there was a clear BPA at the top. I personally would have preferred McKay, as he was one of the 5 and a better fit in terms of need, but if the money didn't work out, I can understand. They walk away with more value that way in the draft. The real problem is that we didn't get any fast rising college pitchers, meaning that they will have to make a big FA splash if they want to give this hitting core a chance over the next few years.
  18. I don't agree with that at all. Buxton is NOT hitting major league pitching, and at one point, working on some things where he cement good behaviors is far more important than letting him continue to flail away at pitches he has no business even swinging at. AAA is not just about proving you've mastered the level. That's scouting stat lines. I'm glad that his average has crept up from under a hundred to around the medoza line, but he's swinging at way too many pitches out of the zone and setting himself up to fail. He's got to correct that, and at one point, a minor league stint to do that makes sense.
  19. I get the defensive value, but that bat isn't ready yet... at what point does it make sense to let him get a tune up in AAA?
  20. As much as I am not a fan of the selection, SS prospects are like pitching prospects in that they are currency, far more so than other positions. That isn't a bad thing. I would have preferred McKay personally, if it was a choice between the two, but at this point, it's done. I'm not sure they outsmarted themselves, but it's clear they were not sold on McKay, Wright, and Greene nearly as much as we were.
  21. If he had an 80 power tool, he would have been the clear BPA and there would have been no question who we were picking
