  1. The best option in the MI this offseason? Maicer Izturis? Marco Scutaro? Scutaro is 37 and Izturis has 1.5 WAR over the last 2 years. The rest of the FA list looks like crap. If there were great, young options that would fit with the org's timeline of expected comepetitiveness - good, great, grand - EVERYONE ON THE BUS. But there weren't. And this is what a re-build feels like.
  2. Great write-up Parker. May is the kind of guy I like to see as the org's #9 prospect, lots of upside if things fall into place. Since it's February in MN I'm only going to look at his K numbers though. That walk rate can wait until Spring. For now I'm hopeful.
  3. Do pitchers get markedly better 10 years into their career? Or when they move to a tougher league? Maybe it happens (I can't think of anyone off hand) but if it does it's not something you can count on. What could the Twins have possibly based this move on other than what he's done on the field? He's not going to reinvent himself Whether we like it or not he's going to be as bad, or worse, in 2013 as he has been over the last 10 years.
  4. How do you judge a manager? The Twins win when the players play well and they win less often when the players play poorly. The manager doesn't pull some magical strings to make the players better. Gardy does some things that drive me nuts. But I'd bet 29 other fan bases say the same about their manager. I don't know if Gardy should stay or go. Mostly because I don't think the manager has a whole lot of impact on the team.
  5. Enough about Rocket Pig. More dogs please.
  6. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure Brick stabbed a guy with a trident at some point in this thread.
  7. But what would make us think that Danny V is going to have more nights like that? He's just not a very good baseball player who has gotten worse over the last 2 years.
  8. This teams needs way too much help to stand pat at the trade deadline. We don't need Span and Willingham to help us win a playoff series in 2017 or whenever. They've lowered the payroll enough that if they have to eat some of Morneua's contract to get a decent prospect they need to. I'll be very disappointed if they stand pat this year. (Understanding, of course, that if the offers aren't there you don't make a move. That will just shift my frustrations from the FO to the Universe)
  9. I'm getting my hopes up that they'll make a surprisingly smart deadline move but it's happened, what, once? Ever? I'm guessing we see Liriano moved for Jim Hoey's brother.
  10. Yeah but Garza throws hard and never came over to Anderson's house for jigsaw puzzle day. THAT IS NOT THE TWINS WAY.
  11. Well that's silly, of course you want to get something for him. Regardless of how you feel about him, if another team values him (they do) you squeeze every last drop out of him. And if we can get a top 25 prospect for him I'll probably kiss JR on the mouth.
  12. Quit with the reasonability. A few years ago I got my first massage and that night my grandma died. Therefore - massages kill grandmas.
  13. I thought this thread was serious until I read people judging Joe Mauer's worth based on his number of RBI. Well played guys, you almost had me!
  14. That's my bone to pick with those who "laced 'em up". They think the stat geeks only look at fangraphs and don't actually watch the games. Stats are part of the story. A more reliable part of the story than any "well, when I played" antecdote someone who laced them up can offer. Also, what exactly is a vacuum of understanding? Is it a Kirk Van Houten lyric?
  15. 1. The White Sox will win the AL Central with a record of 82-80. 2. The Minnesota Twins will finish in 5th place in the division with a record of 73-89. * 3. Current Twins who will be wearing new uniforms after the trade deadline include: sadly, no one. 4. The Angels will defeat the Braves to win the 2012 World Series.
  16. I sure hope it's the wrist but it sure feels like we're creeping awfully close to the end of the line. His age wouldn't dictate that but it makes it a lot harder to envision a return to form. I know when I turned 30 I started falling apart. Of course I'm a mostly unathletic drunk but everything I do hurts more and takes longer to recover from than it did at 29.
  17. "Do we trust the Twins scouts to be able to pick a diamond out of the vast array of middling prospects? Other than possibly Diamond, they haven't done so well lately." Who has though? It just doesn't happen very often for any teams, not just the Twins. Middling prospects are middling prospects because they're not great players. Sure some will make an unexpected leap but for the most part you're not trading for Travis Buck and getting Josh Hamilton. But Span will bring back more than middling prospects, I think a good defensive CF on a team friendly deal who can get on base is more valuable now than ever.
  18. Alright DPJ, enough chit chat. Go piss someone off.
  19. I think they're really going to have to go outside of the org for starting pitching. Gibson should be good but no one else can really be counted on. I'd like to see them make a splash and sign Greinke. Greinke/Gibson could be a decent 1-2. Especially since I've never seen Gibson pitch and have no idea how well he's recovered from a major surgery.
  20. I skip the Mark Simon podcasts and only listen to Keith Law. To each their own I suppose. Mark Simon talks like he's gleefully eating a bowl full of mashed potatoes.
  21. Yeah, sad to see BYTO go. I hope we can swear here.
  22. The bilateral leg weakness bone's connected to the something. The something's connected to the red thing. The red thing's connected to my wrist watch... Uh oh.
  23. Agree w/ Nick. Is there a stat anywhere that shows non-DL games missed due to injury? The Twins have to be lapping the field.
  24. The bats leave me optimistic but that rotation is terrible and besides Diamond and maybe Hendriks (a couple of decent #4's?) I don't see anyone that I'd include in future plans.
  25. I have a buddy who works as a camerman for a local news outlet. They were going to do a story on him at the beginning of last year, a get to know him kind of piece where they followed him around town and talked about the transition from Japan to the US. Apparently Nishi smokes and when they asked him to put out his cigarette he got pissed and stormed off. They never did the piece. That doesn't necessarily mean anything but it might be an insight into how seriously he takes his conditioning.
