  1. I also think that Berrios would be better served by at least one full season at AA and/or AAA. He's young enough that I don't view it as a setback in his overall development.
  2. AMJGT -- I have to respectfully disagree with your second paragraph. He's already 25. At what point in time do we stop being concerned with Super Two and arbritration becoming the sole or primary deciding factors on whether he heads north with the team from spring training or gets called up by a specific point in time? I say, let his performance in spring training be the critical factor (injuries to others aside). However, I agree 100% with your last paragraph.
  3. Almost seems like the polar opposite of what's going on now in DC. Certainly in regards to the Nationals status in the NL heirarchy.
  4. John -- Fantastic article. Definitely piqued my interest in what the remainder of the series will bring. Thanks for writing it!
  5. Age factors at the back end of the conract aside, if true, I like this move. IMHO, locking up a competent starter who actually wants be here is definitely not a bad or short-sighted move. The money certainly seems reasonable and fair for both parties. Plus, I don't see his presence as truly "blocking" any of the highly-touted starters currently in the pipeline (Meyer, May, Berrios, Stewart, Thorpe, et al).
  6. I'd be okay with either Allen or Willis as pitching coach. Neil Allen has no prior connection to the Twins and Willis' connection to the Twins was so long ago and so relatively brief (more than 20 years), that it barely even matters any more. Besides, he's spent a number of years since then in pitching coach roles with Cleveland and, I believe, Seattle. Hardly what I would consider a Twins "insider".
  7. I agree. However, I believe that hiring a bench coach with some strong managerial credentials would help mitigate at least some of that risk. Provided, of course, that he could get that person to buy into his short and long term vision for the team.
  8. I also think, that despite what some naysayers are hoping for and posting, that Nolasco is not going anywhere this offseason.
  9. I have to agree with the general sentiment of this article, especially as it concerns the pitching staff. Trying to get free agents to sign here in the hopes of (maybe) winning a couple more games or so doesn't really serve any tangible long-term benefit, especially without a clear picture of what we already have. I also don't see it as being enough to rouse a significant level of interest from the fan base, to the point of seeing a real increase in attendance this coming season. The potential long-term benefits far outweigh the potential short-term gains, in my eyes. I have no real disagreement with the proposed pitching staff, at least to start the season (barring any injuries). Same for the outfield and the viewpoint on the catching. However, I'm kind of torn on the infield. I'm just not sure we have enough positive pieces in place yet to get a good long-term view here. For example, we have no real idea if Danny Santana can stick at short, we don't know if Miguel Sano can stick at third, and we have no idea if Eddie Rosario can play an adequate second base. Therefore, I think we really need to hang on to both Plouffe and Dozier until we have some clearer answers because I don't think any other team is likely to knock our socks off for either one of them.
  10. Well done! This is a much more complex, and integrated, process than many of us seem to consider. Especially in the heat of whatever moment happens to be upon us (either real or perceived).
  11. I think that moving Nolasco for anyone this off-season is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. First, an arguement we've heard before. Why would anyone willingly want to move a player only one season into a multi-year contract (as we sometimes heard when the Hammer was still here)? Makes it even less likely anyone else would consider signing here. Second, he had one poor season, one that could well be attributed to injury. What's the harm in seeing if the poor season was due to injury or to him being overmatched in the American League? If we see another poor season, one that's not attributed to injury, then all bets are off. Third, I'm not totally convinced that he's not at least one of the Twins' top 5 starters (at the moment), like it or not. I know there are others with much higher potential in the pipeline, but outside of maybe Alex Meyer, I don't see any of them being a significant factor this coming season. I'm sure there are other reasons as well.
  12. Like it or not, I have a hard time not seeing him in the starting rotation coming out of spring training next year, barring injury. Regardless of what TR says, my viewpoint is that there is a greater likelihood he will need to pitch his way off the rotation rather than pitching his way on to it. To me, that's a huge difference. Given the likely state of our starting pitching at the beginning of next year, I just don't see him on the outside looking in. That being said, I also don't foresee a trade, unless some team just knocks TR's socks off. However, I think that is highly unlikely.
  13. Hard to have much argument with these 10, all things considered. Nice to see some kids seemingly coming out of the team's seemingly strong presence in the Dominican Republic, especially ones I don't recall hearing of before (like Diaz at #50 and Silva at #43). Encouraging news for the future! Hopefully, some of them will pan out.
  14. A fascinating look at a day in the Twins Instructional League. I've always kind of wondered how that all worked. Thanks!
  15. Agreed. However, the problem is that the status of "role model" is usually thrust upon players in any sport by their peers, fans, media, etc. I would surmise that few, if any, ever had that specific aspiration leading up to or during their career.
  16. With Hicks now called up, it's time to show that TR and the organization actually believes that. Santana should be in the lineup for virtually every remaining game as shortstop. Let's see what he can do defensively, rather than just speculate.
  17. I, for one, am almost giddy with the thought of a staff full of power arms in the not-too-distant future. While a power arm obviously doesn't guarantee major league success for an individual pitcher or the team, it's a good weapon to have for both.
  18. Valid point! Maybe they can get Rod Carew to work with him in Spring Training, provided he'll be on the roster.
  19. My answer is little, if anything, noteworthy. I would also add that I'd do so, regardless of where or how each call-up is perceived to fit within the organization in the short-term future. In the case of Alex Meyer, that would mean long-term future. The young man deserves his opportunity. However, that's a discussion for another thread.
  20. I agree. While the sample size is far too small to draw any definitive conclusions about his Twins future at this point in time, if he continues to show at least something positive at the plate and in the field the remainder of the season, I see no reason not to give him a decent shot at the 4th outfielder spot next season. He certainly hasn't embarrassed himself thus far. If nothing else, his speed certainly lends an element that the team has experienced far too little of in recent seasons (provided, of course, he can continue to get on-base), Danny Santana notwithstanding.
