  1. I don't see anything to absolutely dislike from the Day 1 selections. Now that we seem to have started stockpiling some intriguing pitching prospects, time to start doing the same with decent and apparently projectable bats. We'll see about Day 2.
  2. I think it's hard to argue with the general rationale here. While I generally agree with the thought that the youngsters should (mostly) be up here and playing, I'm not 100% convinced that's in the best long-term interest of all the young players. Some learn best being thrown to the wolves and playing through a lengthy period of adversity, while others learn best building upon success at a slightly lower level of competition. I don't have the necessary knowledge or insight on each of the youngsters to even have a good sense of which form each one would respond best to and my guess is that most of us out here don't either. Hence, I don't feel qualified to respond on the actions being taken by the front office here. Obviously, we all want to see the Twins do well and be a competitive force in the AL, sooner rather than later. However, I think it's sometimes prudent to take a step back and let those whose full-time job it is to know and evaluate young talent figure this out. I just hope that they make more good than bad decisions in the near future in this regard.
  3. I hear everyone's opinion regarding holding him back 13 days in order to gain an extra year of control, and I don't necessarily disagree with that. However, if he ends up being anything close to as good as advertised, IMO, the Twins would be very foolish to not lock him up to a relatively long-term extension well before he gets very far into his arbitration years, buying out those arbitration years plus one or more free agency years to boot. The team has shown a propensity to do exactly such a thing for players with lesser current ability or future upside, at least from a fan's perspective (a contention better left for a different thread). So why not here? While I personally believe it's a non-issue here, that doesn't mean I think a 13+ day stint in AAA won't happen. Quite the opposite, in fact.
  4. Very well put, dbminn! Can't argue or debate a single thing you said here.
  5. Looks to be an encouraging development, at least at the moment.
  6. I have a hard time seeing how TR is not just biding his time until the AA power arms are ready to prove themselves (in his or the organization's mind, not ours). Whether or not the relative lack of action on the MLB roster front is obviously subject to debate. I also think we need to consider that when he calls the pen a weak spot, the action being targeted are likely a lot less than most of us want to or would like to see. Frustrating, most definitely! But certainly not out of character. While I would also like to to see something positive on the Store or Clippard front, I'm not holding my breath waiting for or anticipating that happening.
  7. I think you're spot-on with the Mauer viewpoint. The problem is, while TR and the rest of the front office may well recognize that point (we'll likely never know for sure), I'd be absolutely shocked if they took any constructive action on their own. Joe Mauer would need to take the initiative here, but I think he has too much professional pride to do that, at least right now. So now, we're in this conundrum.
  8. I agree with the sentiment. Let's hope and pray that TR has the intestinal fortitude (and maybe Pohlad money, too) to do something that will build upon what seemed to finally take root this season. Strengthening the bullpen and upgrading the catcher position would be good for starters, at a minimum.
  9. As much as I hope it won't take at least 6 wins to get to the wild card game, I have a real hard time disagreeing with that assessment.
  10. Let's just enjoy these next 7 games, no matter how the wild card situation plays itself out. Hopefully, it plays itself out in a positive manner for us.
  11. Wouldn't that be a wonderful way to end a season!
  12. Regarding the last sentence, I might add that the opposition seems to be getting away with this strategy, for the most part. Why he can't, or seemingly won't regularly try to beat the extreme shifts he sees is beyond my ability to comprehend or understand. Until or unless this happens, he's not doing himself or anyone else on the team any favors. Did you mean to say right field? From what I've seen, that doesn't appear to be the problem.
  13. I think that some time in Rochester might be in order. At his age and level of experience, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
  14. I agree 100% with the last paragraph. As a diehard myself, I'll almost always watch, given a reasonable opportunity to do so. But until the Brand begins to turn itself around, it's not always going to be an enjoyable experience.
  15. Hard to disagree with the thought process or logic here. IMO, unless something dramatic happens regarding an improved level of play very soon (which I'm not expecting), some of this will start happening by early May. Even if it doesn't, it probably should, especially in regards to the outfield defense and the bullpen, both of which are extremely difficult to watch and/or experience right now. We need some hope, and I have a hard time seeing how the current 25-man roster will be able to generate it. It's easier (at least for me) to feel hopeful in losing if it's with a relatively young roster with a fair amount of potential. It's much more difficult to do with a roster heavily leaning on mediocre to fair veteran players.
  16. Cautiously optimistic here, just like at the start of most every recent season. I'm just hoping (and praying) that the optimism lasts well into the summer months, which would mean longer than it has in the previous four seasons.
  17. Very true, Stringer. Also, we can't forget about the pitching side. I think it's highly likely that both Meyer and May spend at least a decent portion of the season in Minnesota, with Berrios lurking in the shadows (September call-up? 2017?). Plus all those power bullpen arms we've been starting to stockpile, Burdi and Reed, for two examples. They should be making some positive noise in the not-too-distant future. It appears to me that the tide has finally started to turn. The roster on opening day may not bear a whole lot of resemblence to what we'll see prior to roster expansion on September 1, IMO.
  18. I would hope he gets the message from whomever is the pitching coach in Rochester. Whether or not he can embrace it and use it effectively is another matter altogether.
  19. The sooner the Byron Buxton era starts, the better! Hopefully before the summer gets too far along.
  20. Without getting into all the various metrics, I think his overall defense is certainly adequate, especially given the positive aspects he brings as an offensive player.
  21. Have to agree with Stringer here. However, I think the primary reason he could be at the front of the 5th starter pack would be because he's a lefty, whether the Twins care to admit that or not. Whether he can do something constructive with his opportunity, only time will tell.
