  1. I agree 100% with the last paragraph. As a diehard myself, I'll almost always watch, given a reasonable opportunity to do so. But until the Brand begins to turn itself around, it's not always going to be an enjoyable experience.
  2. Hard to disagree with the thought process or logic here. IMO, unless something dramatic happens regarding an improved level of play very soon (which I'm not expecting), some of this will start happening by early May. Even if it doesn't, it probably should, especially in regards to the outfield defense and the bullpen, both of which are extremely difficult to watch and/or experience right now. We need some hope, and I have a hard time seeing how the current 25-man roster will be able to generate it. It's easier (at least for me) to feel hopeful in losing if it's with a relatively young roster with a fair amount of potential. It's much more difficult to do with a roster heavily leaning on mediocre to fair veteran players.
  3. Cautiously optimistic here, just like at the start of most every recent season. I'm just hoping (and praying) that the optimism lasts well into the summer months, which would mean longer than it has in the previous four seasons.
  4. Very true, Stringer. Also, we can't forget about the pitching side. I think it's highly likely that both Meyer and May spend at least a decent portion of the season in Minnesota, with Berrios lurking in the shadows (September call-up? 2017?). Plus all those power bullpen arms we've been starting to stockpile, Burdi and Reed, for two examples. They should be making some positive noise in the not-too-distant future. It appears to me that the tide has finally started to turn. The roster on opening day may not bear a whole lot of resemblence to what we'll see prior to roster expansion on September 1, IMO.
  5. I would hope he gets the message from whomever is the pitching coach in Rochester. Whether or not he can embrace it and use it effectively is another matter altogether.
  6. The sooner the Byron Buxton era starts, the better! Hopefully before the summer gets too far along.
  7. Without getting into all the various metrics, I think his overall defense is certainly adequate, especially given the positive aspects he brings as an offensive player.
  8. Have to agree with Stringer here. However, I think the primary reason he could be at the front of the 5th starter pack would be because he's a lefty, whether the Twins care to admit that or not. Whether he can do something constructive with his opportunity, only time will tell.
  9. I can see both sides of this case and don't have any real argument against either one. Being someone who is not that big a metrics guy, plus having never seen him play, I'm more than a little curious about how he could handle AA pitching. While the overall pitching is likely better, it sounds from those who probably know better than I would that Chatty is in more of a hitter's league than Ft. Myers is. That could be an aid in his overall development. I also think we've pretty well gathered that ABW is likely never going to be a high average or OBP guy. In that case, let's try to continue nurturing what he can do well, that being hitting the bejeezus out of a baseball. In the grand scheme of things, nothing terribly wrong with that, IMHO.
  10. Extremely touching! Thanks for sharing your memories.
  11. IMO, I think the best Twins option regarding Pelfrey would be for him to stay healthy and perform well enough during spring training that some other team in dire need of a back of the rotation starter would take a chance on him. If so, I wouldn't request or expect a whole lot coming back our way in a trade. Could probably say the same thing about Millone, too.
  12. I also think that Berrios would be better served by at least one full season at AA and/or AAA. He's young enough that I don't view it as a setback in his overall development.
  13. AMJGT -- I have to respectfully disagree with your second paragraph. He's already 25. At what point in time do we stop being concerned with Super Two and arbritration becoming the sole or primary deciding factors on whether he heads north with the team from spring training or gets called up by a specific point in time? I say, let his performance in spring training be the critical factor (injuries to others aside). However, I agree 100% with your last paragraph.
  14. Almost seems like the polar opposite of what's going on now in DC. Certainly in regards to the Nationals status in the NL heirarchy.
  15. John -- Fantastic article. Definitely piqued my interest in what the remainder of the series will bring. Thanks for writing it!
  16. Age factors at the back end of the conract aside, if true, I like this move. IMHO, locking up a competent starter who actually wants be here is definitely not a bad or short-sighted move. The money certainly seems reasonable and fair for both parties. Plus, I don't see his presence as truly "blocking" any of the highly-touted starters currently in the pipeline (Meyer, May, Berrios, Stewart, Thorpe, et al).
  17. I agree. However, I believe that hiring a bench coach with some strong managerial credentials would help mitigate at least some of that risk. Provided, of course, that he could get that person to buy into his short and long term vision for the team.
  18. I also think, that despite what some naysayers are hoping for and posting, that Nolasco is not going anywhere this offseason.
  19. I have to agree with the general sentiment of this article, especially as it concerns the pitching staff. Trying to get free agents to sign here in the hopes of (maybe) winning a couple more games or so doesn't really serve any tangible long-term benefit, especially without a clear picture of what we already have. I also don't see it as being enough to rouse a significant level of interest from the fan base, to the point of seeing a real increase in attendance this coming season. The potential long-term benefits far outweigh the potential short-term gains, in my eyes. I have no real disagreement with the proposed pitching staff, at least to start the season (barring any injuries). Same for the outfield and the viewpoint on the catching. However, I'm kind of torn on the infield. I'm just not sure we have enough positive pieces in place yet to get a good long-term view here. For example, we have no real idea if Danny Santana can stick at short, we don't know if Miguel Sano can stick at third, and we have no idea if Eddie Rosario can play an adequate second base. Therefore, I think we really need to hang on to both Plouffe and Dozier until we have some clearer answers because I don't think any other team is likely to knock our socks off for either one of them.
  20. Well done! This is a much more complex, and integrated, process than many of us seem to consider. Especially in the heat of whatever moment happens to be upon us (either real or perceived).
