One poster mentioned trading Nolasco in the event of a repeat of last year, and the Twins eating some salary! Historically they have not done this. My concern is the Twins still have no "ace"! but they do have a minimum of 60% of their starts allocated to 3 pitchers with no flexibility to move those starts. Short of an injury, they don't drop FA pitchers from the rotation. I wish they had went with a plan using our prospects to move forward. Instead I still fear we are stuck in no mans land, not good enough to win with the addition of a few pieces of second tier talent, but too cluttered up with second tier talent to see if we could build a winner in house? I once put lipstick on a pig! It was a waste of good lipstick!

Article: White Sox Winning Winter Meetings Through Day 1
Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My point was not to define Terry Ryan's personality. I don't have an issue with him, I have a question about his philosophy. Signing a Hunter like player for this outfield, and dabbling in #4 type starters seems less a plan, than a form of fan appeasement. If we do not have several pitchers in the minors that are not capable of being 4's or 5's, and no one better than a soon to be 40 yr old in the OF, then we will be in the same place for a long time. There is not a lack of major league players on this team, most are. The problem is the level of their ability. Almost all are of the same ability, there is no one to carry the load! Tinkering and tweaking the roster will not do.- 276 replies

Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So why do the Twins operate this way? We don't want to pay top dollar, lose a draft pick, trade a top prospect, trade a over valued FA (Suzuki), or aggressively bring in young talent! The only option left is to have a GM who is positive he is the smartest guy in the room.- 276 replies

Article: Twins Preparing To Make Their Pitch
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am perplexed that someone who uses a number in his name would pay such little attention to the proper usage of to, too, two! (Kind of sounds like a toy train). What if he was erroneously called LEN ll, more commonly referred to as Jr.!- 48 replies

Article: Twins Preparing To Make Their Pitch
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is still one thing, or should I say one answer missing in this off season puzzle. Is our vaunted minor league system not really that vaunted? Are the Twins as an orginasation philosophically opposed to taking an "unforced" chance on young talent? Or is TR completely misconstructing the roster? Every move made is of the bland vannilla variety!- 48 replies

Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You have actually touched on the core issue with almost the entire Twins 25 man roster. A lot of soft, easy to manage, middling talent. Almost all are of major league caliber! But it is not possible to win with them all in the same clubhouse! That's not a knock on the players, it's a commentary on the FO philosophy! -
Article: Is The Rotation Already Full?
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree, if we are just going to sign a middling of the road pitcher, we already have a plethora of them. It would be like using the word redundant twice in the same sentence! Not mentioned was what caliber or level of pitcher would come here at this time? The outfield is going to be weak in the corners, and totally unknown in CF. The SS is untested, or back in CF, where he did not remind me of Torii Hunter! And the catcher is lowly rated both defensively and in pitch framing metrics. This is not going to be an ERA saving defense. Throw in a new coaching staff, and as a FA pitcher, there have to be better destinations. -
The signing of Torii Hunter might close a big hole for the Twins
Platoon commented on Thrylos's blog entry in Thrylos' Blog - select Tenth Inning Stretch posts
I doubt Hunter was signed to DH! And ponder this? If our young and supposedly talented minor league system has no one who can outplay a 40 year old who is ranked as the worst defensive RF in baseball, either the future is dim, or our FO is in a shambles. I really hoped we were going to move forward. This actually borders on embarrassing! -
Article: Torii Hunter Signing Is Hard To Figure
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mentoring, who? One of those he should be mentoring will now be in the minors (Rosario), because Torii has his spot. Hitting? No one has mentioned that he has spent several years hitting in front of Miggy. If that does not increase your diet of middle in fastballs nothing will. I wonder if he has ever cured his love of low outside sliders with men on base? Defense? While one can argue metrics to an extent, they do point in a direction. Arcia was the third worst RF last year. My eyes would agree. Hunter was the worst. This move will not make it any easier to sign a FA pitcher. Who want to pitch with that outfield behind them? Why don't we just move Kirby's statue into CF, that would complete the scenario! Sorry about the negativity, but I never ever thought this would really happen. Btw, in closing, his taking the money means winning means nothing to him, only the cash! -
Article: The Case for (Jim) "Kitty" Kaat
Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I seem to remember one year when Tim McCarver did a playoff series instead of Kaat? I was really disappointed. Kaat shared more insight and info, and used only half the words McCarver did. I still consider him the best baseball broadcaster I have ever heard! (Sorry Dick). -
Article: What to do: Eduardo Escobar
Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would not trade Eddy, nor would he be my starting SS out of spring training. Good teams have players like EE on the bench, versatile and able to play extended innings if needed. This decision, like many others should be made with 2016 in mind. I would like to see aggressive intelligent decisions based on the future. I don't want the Twins to try and "improve" to 80-82 and call the season success by settling for a replacement level player who will win a game or two this year, but will impede the progress of someone with a better future. Yes, I know that sooner or later the future has to get here, but last years injuries, suspensions, and questionable roster decisions sadly moved the future back a year. There is truth to the rumor that reality bites!! -
Article: What to do: Eduardo Escobar
Platoon replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Before you decide roster moves, an agreement between management and the bench needs to be in place. Win games early in the year? Or build a foundation? That question resolved, it seems someone in the organization thinks DS can play shortstop better than EE, if not now eventually. They are certainly not thinking of putting him at SS because some arm chair GM's think they should. My guess is that they think they know what they have in EE at short, and what you saw is what you will get. They might also surmise that DS could be much better, and continue to fill the lead off spot. They can always switch back to EE, but if they think DS can play short, the time to find out is now. Due to injuries, suspensions, and managerial decisions this issue did not get resolved in as timely a manner as it could have been. How it is now handled will have a snowball effect, ie Hicks, Shafer, and Rosario. If one knew the answer to the question posed at the beginning of this comment, it would go a long way towards speculating on the future roster/lineup. -

Article: Twins to Name Paul Molitor Manager
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While Gardy has been magniminious, and toed the company line, there seems little doubt that he knew and did not like that Molitor was in this years dugout. It was reported that last year he was able to keep Molitor out of the clubhouse but this year had to acquiesce. While they both work for the same employer, I doubt there is a lot in common between the two. I personally liked Doug M., but who knows? That could have been like getting a shiny new toy, and finding it wasn't what you expected. I knew nothing about Luvollo, including how to spell his name. Hopefully among Molitors talents is the ability to make some of the players on this roster a little uncomfortable. Players are supposed to respect their manager, but they don't have to like him. As for TR's world wide search, I doubt it was all dog and pony show. You might know you have a good in house candidate, but it does not hurt to kick a few tires. While it caused angst of amongst the more rabid and vociferous Twins fans, little was lost, or gained. Only time, and a couple good pitchers will determine whether TR made the right choice. -
My Twins Managerial Application
Platoon commented on Cody Christie's blog entry in North Dakota Twins Fan
Your resume made no mention of any of your teams "gettin after it"? If you had done your research you would have realized that this is one of the, if not the, major component of the "Twins Way". (That and the odd habit of droppin our "g" at the end of some words.) With out this indispensable, and fortunately hard to quantify, trait the Twins would be just another small market baseball team, willing to settle for second best! Or fifth best, depending on how many teams are in the division! -
Let's Just Roll With What We Have
Platoon commented on RealTwinsFan357's blog entry in Random Thoughts About Baseball
As an operating principle I like your rationale. One of the advantages of the Twins interminable patience is they are an organization that might or could do this. It will require the front office to assure the new manager that his job performance will be judged on whether the team is more competitive by the end of the year, not by his W/L record. . The FO also needs to lay out to the fans that this is the way forward. About half of this should have been already accomplished, but injuries and some misplaced priorities made 2014 a completely lost season. -
The left field issue seems to be currently in vogue. What the Twins need is someone who can catch the ball in left field. You have to have at least two guys who can catch the ball in the OF. Run scoring has not been an issue. So that could be Shafer, Hicks, or Santana if they continue to refuse to give him a legitimate look at short. Since they are not bringing Buxton up to,start the season, Shafer in center and Hicks in left works for me. Why Hicks in left? Because that's where he is either going to play or not play. Santana goes to SS until he proves he can't. Why this was not done last fall is a puzzle to me. But it leaves player auditions to still be held. It was one of the things that removed any doubt in my mind that a change in managers was needed.

Article: Twins Research Team Won't Tip Their Pitches

Article: Buxton and Sano: Maybe the Time is Now
Platoon replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With the exception of "fixing the starting pitching is easy enough" I like this. It addresses a major issue/problem the Twins have. They can't begin to stabilize their roster or lineup until these two guys are playing here. I am not a big Plouffie fan, but even I think that he is currently a better fielder than Sano. But we have seen Plouffe at his best this year, and it is his ceiling. My point, the Twins have, for the last several years, fielded teams of nice, safe, middling players. Good enough for Dick and Bert to go "wow, what a play" a few times. But what they need is for Sano, Buxton, Vargas, Arcia, Santana, and a rejuvenated Mauer to become the cornerstones. The Plouffes, Doziers, and Suzukis then fill in the voids. If that scenario does not play out, we will again be looking for the next rebuild, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our last World Series win.- 97 replies

The easiest way to solve this is FSN needs to test applicants for the prestigious FSN Girls position with a series of baseball related questions. To wit: * define the infield fly rule, in 240 words or less. * which side of second base does the second baseman stand? (Shifts excluded) * how tall can a shortstop be? * what would you consider the best chance of getting from second to third base? Upon completion of this test, and submission of 2 glossy 3x5 photos, FSN could make their decisions based on the applicants knowledge of the intricacies of the game, rather than on their bright shiny smiles!

An Unconventional Choice for the Next Twins Manager
Platoon commented on PeanutsFromHeaven's blog entry in Peanuts from Heaven
It might be worth it just to see the look on Arcias face when he gets back to the dugout after chasing a double around in the corner like its a cottontail! OSWALDO! GET OVER HERE! BTW, what's wrong with being a Fox North Sports Girl? -
Article: Ron Gardenhire Out As Twins Manager
Platoon replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"I digress, but my point is that trotting Nathan out in the playoffs all those years, trotting Capps out over and over" And that might be why Gardy needs a veteran "stable team" to manage in the future. He tends to manage by rote. In fact he has at mumerous times mentioned that his players, especially his bull pen, knows there roll. I also think this "manage by rote" is the basis of his in game decisions, like bunting and a pretty inflexible pitch count. But when you are dealing with the upcoming Twins roster, flexibility will be necessary. Gardy might be, probably is, a good manager. But flexibility is really not one of his attributes.
