    I would trade Max Kepler for him even up. Cleveland would find out that Max aint gonna hit 5 HR’s, or whatever it was, in a row off him anymore. Ps: Please don’t question my mental acuity on the Kepler trade, or anything else. That horse has left the paddock.

    While a MLB season would be nice, and certainly a feel good tale at a time of few feel good anything’s, there are bigger fish to fry. Unless and until, everyone who needs a test for health reasons has one readily available MLB simply cannot be seen as appropriating tests so the owners and players can profit. If they cannot see that from a moral standpoint, maybe the public relations problems inherent to such a move would be enough to convince them of the heartlessness of such a decision. At least if a 3M plant is in operation to make masks, or a ventilator plant is running, the public good is being served. The rest of us will be able to get by not knowing who would be the winner of a faux World Series. On one other point. Please! Stop using WW2 as a comparison to the Covid. It’s apples to oranges, or worse broccoli. When baseball was played during the war, none of the players, umpires, staff, vendors or fans risked their lives by playing or attending. Nor did they risk the lives of others who did not attend by dispersing after the game. How long would it be before a visible participant, player, umpire, or broadcaster would be hospitalized, or worse die from that decision? Then what? Soldier on as we did during the war? Or admit the folly and suffer the repercussions? This isn’t WW2 which was fought across the ponds. This is right here, right now. There really is no correlation.

    What happened to taking pitches? Working the count? Getting into the other teams bullpen? That was the "Bible" here for years. Comments about hitting the first good fast ball you saw were often dismissed as an out of control hitter, not helping the team. Somedays I think the game hasn’t changed at all, simply the nomenclature and the opportunities to elucidate on them, mine included.

    The Twins are a better team than they were last year in some facets. But to simply imply that the only thing that kept them from moving on in last years post season was "not hitting in three game sample" ignores the absolutely miserable display defensively, and some of the options they sent to the mound in NY. Of course if you meant that the hitters didn’t produce 12 runs per game, then the point had merit.

    So much of the Twins potential is based on offense. Of the three basics of baseball, offense is both the least projectile, and the least repeatable.

    Nor did the Yankees have the benefit of such "whippy" bats and maple. Next I am waiting for the comparisons between The Babe and The Max.

    I do think there may be merit to your opinion, but my comment was more nuanced than the paste of a partial observation. nor did I mention Jakes propensity for overrunning ground balls in the OF. Cave can run, and he has range. But the problems start when he gets to the baseball.

    I don’t know it La Tortuga is better or worse in the OF than Jake Cave, but I do know I have not saw Turtle dive at a ball that bounces 5’ in front of him, and then jump up and chase it to the fence. That’s where Buxtons speed really shines, getting to the ball while Cave is getting up. . Cave is a nice back up for all three OF spots, and can hit a little. But frankly if Cave is a regular in your starting OF, your OF isn’t a strong point.

    I have to start paying more attention. I layed down for a long nap yesterday and awoke to find out the 2020 season is (projected) over. This has me contemplating changing my ID to Rip van Platoon. .

    "Polanco is a poor defensive shortstop. His range is deficient, but in particular, he has a weak and erratic arm." And mentioned, but understated is his inability to turn double plays, and his deficiencies in catching balls thrown to him for tag plays. While I know there was a regime change it still puzzles me how a player this defensively challenged ends up as a MLB SS on any team. Donaldson will help. But ask yourself this question: If your 3B is your best IF, what does it say about your IF defense?

    A few general notes. Someone said the team who scores more wins. Excellent point. And accurate. But one way to see you score more is to keep the other teams scoring below yours. There are two ways to skin a cat. Any defensive metric that does not operate off where the fielder starts from when the ball is hit is bogus. Bench coaches position players, the players simply reacts to the opportunity he has. Good first baseman make better infielders. They save numerous errors, and are often overlooked and undervalued. They also allow a fellow IF to throw, not aim a baseball. Any metric that doesn’t show Jorge Polanco to be in the bottom 1% of MLB SS is not valid.

    While IF range may be a problem, so is kicking the two hopper, which is a Polanco specialty. To a degree I sort of felt the same way about Sano. It wasn’t the balls he didn’t get to, it was the ones he did and didn’t hang on to. No doubt Donaldson will help and was a good add. But I will repeat: If one doesn’t think defense isn’t important, one wasn’t watching the Yankees whitewash of our beloved nine. There was a stark contrast on display.

    The Donaldson signing is a good get. It helps the Twins in several ways. A better glove at third and even more help defensively when shifting is taken into consideration. Plus some more veteran influence. That said, posts which call into view the Twins comparatively weak IF defense, and in my view, substandard catching defense have legitimate points. Bottom line: Offense will win regular season games in bunches. Pitching and defense win championships. Watching the Yankees and the Twins play defense should have been a yardstick to all on what defense does, or doesn’t bring to the table in close games. Including RP, SP, defense and offense in the mix, baseball has four segments to emphasize on the field. Donaldson has simply piled on to the teams already MLB sufficient offense. Adding a player of his stature to one of the other segments may have had a far greater impact on 2020!

    IF Bill James made a list of Twins needs it would look like this: LH SP RH Sp LH RP RH RP Ambidextrous any kind of pitching An IF who could field. A catcher who could catch. A 1B who could hit!

    When I saw the number that was separating the team and Berrios on arb I had to do the math twice. I think the spring training budget for Gatorade is higher than that.

    I want to assure all here that the Twins are "all in" on Colas and that JP has not and never has put any restrictions on the amount of money the FO can spend to improve the team. They are actively engaged with his agents and have been assured that they are in the running for his services, and that Colas loves the Twin City area, and cold weather. To save the time of a further post, I would also like to say that the Twins were very excited to have been in consideration tight until the very end. They made a competitive and serious bid for Colas, and while very disappointed that he is not coming here, they wish him the best in NY, LA, or Boston.

    The lack of defensive competence by the Twins is most evident when they play a series against a good defensive team. The plays they make v the plays we don’t can be eye opening. The troubling part is that on the defensive front there seems no options being pursued? Bombas or Bust!

    I think the new FO has made some excellent moves in administration and in hiring staff and coaches, and installing a better system that had been in place. Drafting decisions take years to evaluate. I am not as sure I think the cupboard is as full as Ted thinks, but only time will answer that question. This is STILL a team with questionable starting pitching, an average pen, an excellent (at least last year) offense, a bottom of the league defense from the outfield grass to the backstop, and an exceptional defensive OF when all hands are on deck. As for the perception that the Twins will join baseball in the $100M FA contract club? That will likely happen. But sadly it will be when the going rate is $125-$150M!
