  1. This is a crying shame! Now we will never find out if this was a great GT, or maybe the greatest GT ever? It's how I felt about Tony Olivas and Teddy Bridgewaters knee injuries. Greatness, stolen from their grasp. Removing my tongue from my cheek, it's just as well its cancelled. It would have almost assuredly snowed, and baseball is a crappy game in bad weather.
  2. I imagine there a quite a few people on TD who have umped baseball at some level. Organized ball, high school, Legion, or above. If you have you know it takes about 3 minutes of the first inning to know how your day will go behind the plate. Catching seems to be so hard to quantify statiscally, that sometimes the eye test is more readily applied. A guy who doesn't square his body blocking the ball in high leverage situations, whose receiving hand lurches, and who seems to have an acceptable arm, but has a low throw out percentage is fairly easy to spot. A catcher is the only defensive position player who handles every pitch. That's why judging him in 4 AB's seems shortsighted to me.
  3. This! There are three premier defensive positions in baseball. Catcher, SS, and CF. SS has been sort of bastardized by the incessant shifting, and launch angles, but it's still a defense first spot. As is CF. I also realize the short benches make an offense bench catcher as asset, see Garver. But your #1 guy should be glove first, and I still would prefer the second one to be the same. I know it's hard to find good catchers. And harder to find a two way one. It generally leaves you with a choice, offense or defense. It takes a lot of stick to make up for a poor glove at that position. A lot!
  4. Gibson likely survived due to the light on his feet Sano. That liner had double written all over it, unless it comtinued to rise and clear the fence. Yesterday looked like one of those games where you tried as hard as you could to hand someone a baseball game, and they refused to take it. I see the same old Gibby, walks, nibbling, and high pitch counts.
  5. Gibsons performance was almost magical. While he didn't really get much help from the defense, he also got pretty much hammered. And last game 5 walks? He is definitely testing the theory of damage control. The good news is help is on the way. Hughes was mid season form in 5 innings, and is ready to resume his rightful position on the roster.
  6. Sort of a strange lineup for opening day with a full house. 4 bench players? I know these types of lineups are common on get away day. Sometimes I think Molly has a little of the contrarian in him?
  7. Well if this is true, Rosario is being reprimanded I imagine. But that's simply uninformed speculation, which is highly encouraged, and practiced on GT. . But on another note, if it's true, maybe it's to keep the customers warm? Booing during the lineups generates blood flow, and heats the extremities!
  8. . No, me either. Of course as long as we keep copying and posting on that premise, this will make a dog chasing its tail look like not only intelligent, but a good use of time and space.
  9. Great name........... Hard to fit on a T shirt.
  10. I think that raccoons have appeared previously in GT? I am sure they were included in the infamous "why did the chicken cross the road" GT from last year. If not, it was a gross oversight. I would also point out that if GT were not themselves Twisted Logic, there would be hardly anyone here. Btw, Twised Logic. Great name for a garage band. .
  11. Well at least it's doubtful he can bankrupt all those casinos?
  12. I see the raccoons are possibly inflicted with distemper? Luckily I have all my shots. Speaking of, I recently was coerced into getting my very first flu shot. There were immediate results. In several days I had a headache, runny nose, burning eyes, and borderline narcolepsy. While I am glad I turned down the rabies shot, I am still concerned about the hoof in mouth one I received.
  13. I have been to Grand Forks. I am surprised to see a window is a negotiating point? That said, I am TiVo'ing "The Terror". Last night I was flipping between game and Terror. One show had human beings struggling in horrific weather, and the other had ships stuck in the ice.
  14. I rarely put a coat on my sausages before I grill them, the zippers get in my teeth!
  15. When possible Thanksgiving always includes............."as God is my witness, i thought they could fly"
  16. Hmmmm. Mine will have to wait a few years to diss me with that!
  17. "Another note from Cliff; back in pirate days the front of a sailing ship was known as the forecastle and the rear of the ship was called the aftcastle. That meant if you were standing in the middle of the ship you were half-aftcastle; thus the etymology of the more modern “half-a$$ed”." Fortunately GT's operate on a level that would preclude anyone from asking, "where is the poop deck"!
  18. Yes, let's take Bryce Harper as an example. If he comes up leading off the ninth down two or more, and simply swings away every time, the shift stays in place. Someone with more math IQ than me can tell us how much the shift reduces his OBP. But, if he bunts a couple times against the shift, and the opposing team doesn't want to put the leadoff man on, he likely gets to hit shiftless. Basically it's time teams make it much more unpredictable for another team to shift on them.
  19. It's a circular reference!
  20. Some valid points. But like all things, circumstances need to be taken into consideration. Down 3, leading off the bottom of ninth. Morrison AB. Bunt for a baserunner, or the slight chance of a HR, or a single against the shift? (No Morrison jokes please). Same situation 2 on, 2 out? I know these are simplistic variables, but one can see how each AB does not call for a cut and dried action.
  21. From Joe P. "But they don't because the shift is more than a defensive strategy. The shift is a psychological game, and has been since the days of Ted Williams. It is meant to convince hitters that they don't really have the option to bunt or chop the ball the other way. To do that, the shift suggests, is to hurt yourself and the team.". This is most likely why more players don't bunt. And I think you can add one or two others. Certain players have been, since they started playing, known for their hitting more than any other part of their game. I have no doubt that many view bunting as beneath their status as an offensive threat, and............... The money is in home runs, not in bunting. This could or could not be what Joe P. meant by "hurt yourself", but it is how I would interpret some players insistence on hitting against the shift.
  22. Well a .666 BABIP isn't bad either, but I am not sure it's that simple. Does it delineate if it's one foul or missed bunt attempt, and then a ground ball to the pocket man? As for the amount of attempts? From listening to active players and former players it seems there is a definite lack of enthusiasm for the tactic. I get the impression that it's almost viewed as not only disrespectful of the game, but also not playing fair. I don't agree and I do think if it becomes a more regular weapon it will grow in acceptance.
  23. Agreed. But also noted that if one has enough bat control to change change his launch angle, one can learn to hit a 30' wide patch of grass with a bunt.
  24. I have a ton of opinions on unwritten rules, for another day. And btw I love to discuss those rules. And in retrospect maybe I should have left Dozier and the unstolen base out or the OP. I am more interested in what teams will do to combat what is becoming a plethora of shifts. They used to be reserved for big power pull hitters, or so it seemed. Now it causes almost more discussion when their isn't one. The other question is, what if not bunts, are the options?
  25. Nice story. . Interesting, and it certainly puts Doziers theory on bunting against the shift the other day in perspective. Btw, good thing the game was not as organized in those days. The catcher who threw the potato to third in MiLB was, I think, banned for life? Just think if the potato was loaded?
