  1. There are a lot of things for Twins fans, and the Twins themselves to worry about. Byron Buxton is not one of them.
  2. I tried to find a Chinese restaurant in Ames one evening. It was not easy. Ames is a huge city!
  3. Thanks! I don't think looking at this roster, and this pitching staff, and suggesting ways to improve it is at all indicative of wanting a constant rebuild. I view it more as reality. The Twins are far more entertaining to watch than last year. There's some semblance of talent on the field. But for the FO to think that this pitching staff could take us to even a second WC spot would border on malfeasance. Making a desperate trade for a faux WC race would set this orginisation back a year at least. It sucks after six years, but the future is still where it's at in TwinsWorld.
  4. The Twins are not a team of good pitchers playing beneath their level temporarily. But they are a team of some young position players who will improve with seasoning. You can look with optimism at the position players, and with some MiLB replacements even if a veteran such as Dozier, Grossmann, Escobar, or even Rosario is traded. But even BD won't bring a kings ransom. As for Santana, if you had prospects blocked in MiLB he goes, but we don't. So we almost have to keep him. Frankly it's going to take a lot of money, some luck and a genius to solve the MLB pitching. We should be very select sellers for the simple reason is it is virtually impossible to win with consistency with pitching of this level. The offense will consistently get better, with or without several of the above named players. I doubt the same can be said for the pitching.
  5. The Twins aren't going to keep winning this year with or without Santana. Not unless some dramatic change in the pitching staff, both SP and RP is made. And I frankly do not see that happening. There is no good answer to this question, but there are several options to choose from. IF I can get two solid, close to MLB prospects I would probably pull the trigger. And the main reason is numbers. The team has an almost bare cupboard in MiLB, and a serious lack of depth, not to speak of quality on the MLB roster. The shortages are mind boggling. In a normal situation guys like Chief are correct, you can't keep trading for the next shiny object. We could hope the Twins would keep Ervin, and go ape bleep crazy in the FA market, but that ain't gonna happen. The Twins problem isnt upgrading a MLB staff, it's acquiring one.
  6. At this juncture I would not trade Santana. The only reason I would consider it is if the haul included a couple of the very hard to define "solid SP prospects". And the only reason for that is this team need numbers so badly. It does little good to have an Ace, if the bottom 2-3 of the rotation is cannon fodder.
  7. Two distinct ways to go pointed out here. In the old world, Dozier would likely already have an extension, and Gordon and Vielma would be 28 when they are called up. Hopefully that changes. On this roster I could still see moving Dozier, sliding Polanco over, bringing up the glove first Vielma, and considering moving Gordon also. I still think the offense on this team will only continue to solidify. And the oddity about BD to me remains this. We consider him to valueable to trade, but no one will give us anything for him. Or at least hasn't so far.

    Well.....maybe not...

Concur with the Goat Guy. The best thing about Kinglzer being the closer, is they won't be bringing him in with men already on base. The bad thing about him being a closer is he will break your heart more often than it deserves to be broken. Elite closers are good to have and hard to find. Kintzler doe seem to have the mentality for the job. He just doesn't have the stuff to reach the next level.
  9. While I haven't watched any of these guys, I do totally agree with the timeline theory. The teams window is just starting to open. Position wise it will be wide open next year. After that there is likely 4 years before things start happening, free agency, contract extension discussions, etc. Having these position players without pitching, is like a good NFL team missing a top flight QB. Hair pulling frustration!
  10. ".........became the most coveted second basemen in baseball." I wish the Dodgers had believed that! . The bottom line between Dozer and Sano is that a pitcher can control Doziers power, but can do nothing to stop Sano. Doziers true value would/could be as an on base machine, gap power, and a pretty good baserunner. Add to that an acceptable second baseman and seemingly a good clubhouse guy. His power with RISP can be mitigated with good control, AKA bearing down. In Sano's case the only one who can stop him, is him! He can hit any strike, to anywhere. And I think he is just getting started. He will terrorize MLB pitchers for years to come! Dozier on the other hand will find it very difficult to ever approach last years numbers. MLB pitchers aren't fools, and they won't let you hit pop flies over the flower beds forever.
  11. So if your reports on Tonkin/Wimmers are correct, Molitor again dissed the FO choice, Tonkin, with playing time. I don't think that's a good way to promote job security. There may be happy feel good reports about metrics emanating out of One Twins Way, but the on field goings on often seem to go differently.
  12. I sympathize with beat guys, they are virtually part of the team. The radio and TV guys are part of the team. It's the way baseball rolls. I think guys like LEN3 and Bernadino are good guys, and decent reporters. But frankly the only thing interesting you ever get from them is LEN3's preview of Florida eating spots in March. The rest is spoon feed mush. Reusse is bashed on these pages regularly, and I will be after the following. Reusse likely knows as much about baseball as most of the coaching staff. I am not talking about how to hold a split fingered FB. But grew up int the game, he knows how players react, he appreciates the length of the season. He knows you cannot win for any length of time with crappy pitching, He is not afraid to say the cupboard is barer than most think. Guys like him give you an opinion, and it isn't always agreeable and doesn't always turn into fact. But it's their opinion, not the current one from the FO. The focus on Sano, Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, and Berrios is understandable. They are an exciting core. And I will freely admit I have no idea how in the bleep they are going to solve the pitching problems. But until they do, a group of awfully good young baseball players are going to go to waste! Molitor is a huge part of the problem, and he has to go. But until the pitching improves, his complete lack of acuity is relatively harmless!
  13. The Twins need pitching. There was a period a few weeks ago where weather the schedule and magic jelly beans gave the illusion that they had a little. Reality has struck. I say this not because of current results but because of track record. Bullpen analysis can be shortened to this: Brandon Kinzler is your closer. Your SP this: The struggle to announce a 5th starter three weeks in a row. The Twins are in a tough spot. Woeful lack of SP and RP depth, and not enough quality position depth to trade for pitching. There future is tied to mostly guys in Mpls already. Their only real trade chip, Dozier, has proven to have not much trade value. I am not a huge FA fan, but this winter Pohlad is going to have to oil the hinges on the bank vault.
  14. The BABIP rate is one of those numbers that is like so many others. It's quoted often, but it's more complex than that. You hit line drives, your number can really be insane. You hit pop ups, and it's inane. And it's still dissed if it's too high, and dismissed if it's too low. As for RG, he has the great eye, and the patience. But like the bottom of the order hitter he is I always wondered this? Why nibble and increase his ability to get on base to around 1.000 by walking him. Make him (them) hit the ball, and lower it to their lifetime .250 average, which is why they are in those spots to start with. This isn't facing Sano and being forced to throw strikes, there is just nothing to lose here.
  15. The above is why I do not like the idea of drafting a 1B hitting prospect 1-1. And why this season is still very much smoke and mirrors. The pitching is just not their for long term succes. If, the season stumbles, Santana should be traded for depth. But regardless, their is no discernible light at the end of the SP tunnel.
  16. I always seemed to me that Oliva and Puckett were good "bad ball" hitters. Both seemed to swing at some pretty off the plate pitches, and hit them. But if you don't, you are an undisciplined hitter. Oliva was a god awful outfielder to start with, Arcia like. Great arm, but the rest was all learned over the years. Rosario is a much more polished OF right from the get go, with a more accurate arm. But there is no way he will ever compare with Oliva as a bat. Oliva was one of the best natural hitters who ever played. His knees robbed him of the recognition of that fact, but the man could hit!
  17. McKay as a pitcher, Greene as a pitcher, Wright, Greene as a MI, and McKay as a 1B. In that order. The thing is we are desperately in need of SP. This team still has one proven starter, and is an injury away from having a terrible SP staff. McKay as a 1B? I think we have that market cornered already. Greene is the shiny new object, and would make for Buxton like interest in MiLB again. As for Wright? I hope we have the opprtunity to find out if a 1-1 can be really special. I don't think he will give us that satisfaction.
  18. He is the Twins Ace, and a nice solid MLB pitcher. As someone noted above if put out at the curb for the June garage sale, he will not be considered an Ace for trade purposes. We always overvalue our own players. But I will say this. Four pitchers like him, and another guy who could find his glove before the game would take you a long way!
  19. So is this one of those message moments? Showing Mejia and Berrios that they will pitch Herb Carneals second cousin in place of them if they don't start to control the FB? I really cannot come up with anything else that would make enough sense to justify one calling himself a MLB GM. While I am not one of those that think these games actually mean anything, as I can't see this team being a season long contender, I still cannot see a plan here. I know the new acquisitions are as expendable as an FBI director but Berrios just is not going to learn anything more from blowing away AAA hitters.
  20. I have no idea if Sano will hit .300 or OPS 1.070. But in general he will terrorize AL pitching for years, he is scary. Vargas has definite impact potential. I am surprised that RG has so few AB? He has a great eye, but when thrown a lot of strikes still seems benign. Dozier will likely go on a tear. But will it be when the games count, or after the seasons finish is decided? Time will tell.
  21. I think Rosario, Kepler, Buxton and Polanco are all real. My only caveat is that Polanco eventfully will have to move to second. He will someday prove to be a far better hitter than Dozier. Santana is a pretender, as would anyone be with those numbers in the first few games. The real pretenders are Hughes and Kintzler. As bad as the teams pitching is looking, think how it will look when these two come back to earth. To round out the roster Mauer and Castro are sadly, real. Joe will never be Joe again, it is what it is. And Castro seems to be yet another MLB catcher. Competent, throws better than the previous placeholder, and blocks balls worse.
  22. While the Twins have a plethora of 1B types, McKay would fit the the Twins timeline better either as a pitcher or hitter. Greene is tempting, but a huge role of the dice, and development might cause him to miss the prime of this teams postion players. (Unless the team changes its stance on signing their own FA) High velocity high school arms like Greene are scary, and if he ends up hurt, he is at least 5 years from TF, if at all. As of this draft, the Twins don't seem to have a farm system that looks to support a long term run of contention.
  23. I so hate to say this for like what? The sixth year in a row? But any decisions made have to be made for the next 4 years, not 4 months. That said there are really no good SP options, or at least not enough to turn the corner. The OF could be set, Sano likely would end up at 1B, and the pen has at least some promising options in MiLB. As for the middle IF, if they do not trade Dozier, I think Polanco's bat will force them to let Dozier go when his contract is up. If that does happen, I imagine/hope they go with a glove first SS. Polanco will likely never put up Doziers HR numbers because he doesn't sell out to the corner foul pole, but I think he will be a much better hitter before all is said and done. Some guys can just hit, and he seems to be one of them.
  24. Buxtons problem is in his head. It may have happened anyway, but only a fool would have taken someone this young, with limited MLB success and stuck him in the three hole. (Or someone hoping to save his job) The last thing BB needed was added pressure. That said he is in the unique position of being a player who has to be allowed to work it out here. His history is that no matter what level he moves to, he struggles, and then denominates. Hopefully this will continue. Because even allowing for the miserable pitching, if he doesn't pan out, this franchise is in serious trouble. This is Buxton and Sanos team now. They either make it or we look at 5 more years of an abyss.
  25. There is no reason for Buxton to go anywhere. Stick him in the 9 hole and let him work his way out of it. He started to last fall, he will again. This team needs him, and needs the other youth to get going. There isn't anything else coming that's going to make this a contending team. They're it. If anyone thinks this is actually a contender after 15 games, then a call for some decent SP is in order, not a new CF.
