  1. This, this, this! Well put
  2. Right now, no, but if you start talking about a 6, or even 4 year contract, we're not talking about right now Let me be clear, I like Dozier, and the idea of extending him is something I'm ok with, it just has to be handled carefully. One other thing from that article though, is that Dozier did perform very well on ground balls, including 10 ground ball doubles. Shifts would cut into that dramatically
  3. the inclusion of Simmons in his list makes it more about skill level than age I think. If you have marginal offensive skills, whether it's through age deterioration or just not having a lot of offensive skill to begin with, you end up resorting to pulling the ball.
  4. A big reason for this is that is also when players want to talk contract extensions. If he were nearing the end of a contract, Mauer wouldn't want to discuss a contract extension after his 2014 seasons because his value would be at a low and he wouldn't even come to the table to discuss it. Contract extensions are two way discussions.
  5. And your ability to wax a car will give you a great indicator how good their hands are
  6. It's a shame the slots mean almost nothing
  7. I do wonder, and if you say varying degrees of defenses behind it, I would be more dismissive of it. Not saying that it is the only reason, but the fact that he had consistent ERA underperformance and consistent bad defenses behind him, it's hard to discredit that
  8. Again.....nearly every one of those 1000 innings (with the exception of 80 or so with the Dodgers) were in front of very bad defenses, which can absolutely account for ERA lagging behind FIP.
  9. 10 days past, you may not even read this, but here goes anyway. "That his hr/walk/strikeout ratios versus his era means that one batter per game that you "really need to get out" he doesn't get out as often as all the other guys he pitches to." But WHY wasn't he getting them out? Last year definitely seemed to be an anomaly, evidenced even by his FIP being significantly higher than it had been. I really didn't buy the injury thing at first, until I started looking at his peripherals from the past and then after his September performance. I think something really was off. Now is he going to post a 3.20 ERA? No, particularly not in front of Arcia/Hicks/Hunter. But depending on what call ups happen when and how it all shakes out, there is no doubt in my mind that he can be a 3.70-3.90 ERA that gets a bunch of wins for a competitive team.
  10. It's also unusual for the player to be a two sport star like Stewart was who spent as little time as a pitcher as Kohl did. Coming in, he was unpolished, even by High School pitcher standards. This was something that was known. And don't get 'two sport star' confused with 'two sport athlete'. While most people who end up becoming professional athletes probably did well in other sports they played, Kohl was a top football recruit, and it was uncertain whether he was going to choose football or baseball.
  11. So wait a second. Stewart throws a 2.59 ERA in his first full professional season when it's common knowledge he's focusing on fastball command and throwing his slider, his best strikeout pitch, minimally, and he didn't show anything?
  12. Santana's K% was also higher than his numbers over the last couple years suggest it should be (off the top of my head, I want to say a 5% increase), so some improvement there could be expected as well to offset some of that BABIP
  13. Honestly, today's baseball is more forgiving of walks. With an expanded strike zone and K%s up, if you get miss bats, you can get around walks.
  14. Maybe they buy into the "tall guys are late bloomers" ideal.
  15. Or did Morneau finally get over some concussion symptoms. There's some head injury stuff to take into consideration here as well.
  16. I'm ok with Buxton/Mauer comparisons
  17. Regardless of how the prospects pan out, the trades were always the big mark against him in my opinion. The Santana > Gomez > Hardy > Hoey progression, the Ramos for Capps.......ugh
  18. The September decline of Vargas is a lot being made out of very little. His BA dropped a lot, yes, but his BB% increased while his K% actually stayed about the same compared to August and he also hit more home runs per plate appearance. The biggest issue was that his BABIP fell to a horrendous .258 after being at a very high .400 in August. Of course, more home runs takes away balls in play and causes your BABIP to typically drop. But Vargas hits the ball too hard to sustain a BABIP below .300. And while Vargas had a .233 batting average and a .290 OBP in September, he still OPS'd .737. Although I will say that I hadn't broken it down like spycake did (though I do have some concerns about arbitrary end points) Is he a sure fire can't miss guy? Absolutely not. But I do'nt think September really provided anything for people to worry about. I mean, if we had a guy who put up 5 home runs a month and hit .233, you're looking at a guy hitting 30 home runs. I would take that any day.
  19. A spread sheet that does this would be very easy to create. If there's enough interest, just let me know what prospect list you would like used (MLB, BA, etc). The more players on it the better
  20. He started the game and threw a one-two-three first Beaten to the punch......at least it was by Parker I guess
  21. Rasmus isn't interested in a multi year deal. Again, every report I've seen has him looking for a one year prove it deal to try and capitalize on another contract.
  22. I like him for the same reason (though to a lesser extent) I liked Michael Saunders as a trade target. He can play respectable CF in the short term, and profiles nicely at a corner spot (as a plan B should Rosario/Arcia either take time to get going or just not pan out) once you have Buxton up. Neither of these guys are worth any significant mammoth trade to build your outfield around, but they're viable pieces that can be moved around and give you alternatives should your prospects be delayed or struggle.
  23. Rasmus is looking for a one year deal by all reports (unless I missed something).
  24. Yes....we're all aware of the 2008-2012 run environments. But over his time at the PCL, he had a .877 OPS while the league OPS was .779. Even when you account for park factors, he was performing very well. Again....I'm not saying he's an all-star, and that he's not bound to regress outside the confines of Coors Field. But to think that he wouldn't be an upgrade over what we have now is just overvaluing our own commodities
