  1. I usually voted for whoever I thought was most deserving in the AL and then would just randomly pick players in the NL.
  2. Just looked at my ticket to find out and I was wrong. I'm actually in suite 18, not a box. I think that's actually better. Double woo-hoo.
  3. And I've got box seats! Woo-hoo!!
  4. I think it'll be harder for Willingham (or Span) to make it than Mauer. Looks like Napoli will be the starting catcher but Mauer should be the backup. If they only take 2 catchers, he might miss out - Weiters or AJ could go instead - but I think he's as close to a lock as a Twin can be. Than again, if it's like last years All-star game where everyone dropped out and there were like 60 all-stars, Willingham will be just fine.
  5. Whatever leash he has, has to be incredibly short at this point. We don't have enough options to just DFA him but a move to the pen makes sense when another starter is ready.
  6. That's too bad. I remember there was an article about him a few months ago about him getting better.
  7. Agreed. As to the topic, I think we should hold onto right up the deadline, hope he continues to improve and, if he does, get a good deal for him or offer him arbitration (which he might accept). I don't want the Twins to trade him for Dustin Martin/Drew Butera type deal.
  8. I wasn't a huge fan of the Wimmers pick but he was supposed to be one of the safer picks in the 2010 draft and should've been quick to the majors. Hard to fault them on that. In the second round they took toolsy Nico Goodrum from Georgia. The Twins had wanted to improve their scouting in the southeast and had put Terry Ryan in charge of that area. He loved Goodrum. Obviously, I'd trade our two picks for theirs in a minute but their picks were certainly defensible.
  9. Nice writeup. I liked this pick - some risk but maybe something better than just a good pen arm, too.
  10. Not a lot to report on Hicks. He missed 10 days with an injury but has played in the last three, going 4-13 w/a double and a triple. His stat line is still pretty much the same .248/.340/.378 with those that double and triple being the only new extra base hits since the last write-up.
  11. I'm ok with a spot start here or there from Duensing.
  12. Yeah, BA had a question about that when he was signed (and keep in mind he was 16 so wouldn't have been draft eligible in the states) and had him going somewhere (IIRC) in the top 15.
  13. And they won 94 games, not 93.
  14. Seriously, what has ever giving you the indication that anyone in the FO is aiming for "mediocrity?" Hell, Smith made more 'win-now' moves than any previous Twin GM. They've had a ton of success over the last decade and we've now had one and a half seasons of bad baseball and Ryan is rebuilding the team. We just drafted the highest ceiling prospect in the draft (and paid him the highest bonus in MLB this year). But you really think the FO is aiming for mediocrity.
  15. Great. Any idea where he'll go?
  16. Complete bust is a bit of reach for a 21 yr old in A+. He's also managed to draw 31 walks against 45 strike outs. That's pretty good. Just give him time.
  17. You make some good points but I think their are two issues that will add to Span's attractiveness. First, unlike Pence, he is cost controlled and therefore more teams can afford him than Pence. Second, with the additional wild card, more teams will (hopefully) be buyers at the deadline. That said, I'm not sure the Twins move Span at all. I think it's more likely that the Twins don't make a major move and instead try and make more Bullock for Diamond trades and wait a year before moving anyone of significance.
  18. Nice write up. I had mentioned somewhere else that while Ryan says we need pitching, that doesn't necessarily mean flame throwers or aces. It could just mean innings eaters. We got Diamond for Bullock. Ryan might be able to make a few more low level deals like that and keep Span/Willingham. While not sexy, the Twins have gotten some nice returns on these type of pitchers that other teams tend to under value. That said, I do think the Twins should make a significant FA signing - like Anibal Sanchez if he didn't extend - and the fact that the Twins were rumored to be in on Buerhle for a bit might mean they would consider a big signing. That said, it would be nice if Benson or Hicks would get it going so we had some more help on the way, either as trading talent or on field talent.
  19. I read another article but scouts don't see him as a pitcher like they did with Hicks (who threw high 90s).
  20. Good piece at baseball america: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/high-school/awards/player-of-the-year/2012/2613573.html Didn't see it posted elsewhere but if it was, my apologies.
  21. While money doesn't always mean more wins, it does make it easier to compete and get around mistakes. For instance, the 2010 Twins survived Morneau's injury in large part b/c they could afford to use a bench spot for Thome. They also spent around 12m to sign Pavano and Hudson. The 02-06 Twins never got to have an assets like that.
  22. Well, the public backlash at trading Morneau for a pu-pu platter won't let that happen. And while this thread is discussing moving guys like Span and Willingham, remember that the Twins got Diamond for Bullock. There are a lot of pitchers like that out there that the Twins might target and get. Other teams tend to de-value soft tossing, control guys whereas the Twins have gotten some good bang for their buck with them. I could see Ryan trying to making small moves like that and keeping Span/Willingham. He said he needs pitching but he never said he needs flame throwers.
  23. He means in the entire draft, not the teams prospect list. And Ramos was never the Twins #1 prospect.
  24. Actually, I'd vote for Garbe over Johnson. Johnson was #2 is a really bad draft class. Garbe though went a few spots ahead of Sheets, Zito and Myers (among others). Fun list though. One issue that (should be) gone is signability. Several teams passed on better talent due to costs which won't happen as much, and didn't happen to the Twins this year. Here's hoping.
  25. You make a good point but on the other hand, with the added wildcard, more teams may be buyers which could expand the market. If, say the Reds are fighting off the Cards for the last playoff spot and they think they need to improve their bullpen, they'll probably end up overpaying someone (maybe us, maybe someone else). But someone will overpay for a bullpen arm this season. It always happens.
