  1. If Jepsen comes in, earns an arb offer, and is effective in 2016, then I'll reconsider my opinion of this. It will look much better. Still not a big enough effort for 2015, IMO, but much better.
  2. Did Broxton have significantly less value than Jepsen? Because he and $2m went for one lottery ticket, not even a pitcher, with a 700 OPS in his third attempt at rookie ball. If TR was going to cheap out, wouldn't that have been a better option?
  3. Does Allen even know Jepsen? Jepsen pitched for LAA in 2014, no?
  4. Actually, no. That's that nature of July 31 for the Twins, under Terry Ryan. St Louis was able to get a similar reliever basically free, and Milwaukee tossed in $2m. Terry Ryan felt the need to trade away two of your top 30 prospects. Not to mention, if July 31 is such a tough time to buy help, then, oh, I don't know...don't wait around until July 31. (BTW...didn't you tell us two days ago not to worry...there were 47 hrs left till the deadline? Now you tell us it's tough to trade at the deadline??) The Twins bullpen IS probably a little better, but that's because the Twins bullpen is pretty dismal, not because Jepsen is any kind of real difference maker.
  5. He's probably a bit better than "Decent," but I won't quibble. But he was basically a salary dump. And I'd take him above Boyer, for sure, for the last two months of the season.
  6. Broxton to the Cardinals. For a 20 yr old posting a .700 OPS in his third yr in rookie ball, without a position. Too steep a price for TR?
  7. How many 6-9 pitchers have there been? One of them is in the hall of fame. Again...if height has anything to do with it, we should be collecting them. But it most likely doesn't have anything to do with anything.
  8. I particularly like being reminded that Washington had the ****'s to tell Bill Smith "Capps for Ramos? No deal. Not enough. You're going to need to add a minor leaguer to that, my friend. " And Smith said, "OK."
  9. I don't think that's fair, Mike. We don't "know" anything about tall pitchers. The percentage of the population that has the ability to throw a baseball 95MPH or more is extremely small. From that extremely small percentage, we're talking about the subset of people who are extremely tall. There's simply too few examples to make any conclusions about extremely tall pitchers. There's a theory out there (one I don't buy, but it's pretty widely held) that short RH pitchers are to be avoided because of the lack of "downward plane." Well, it that's the case, the Twins should be looking to sign 6-9 guys every chance they get, rather than avoiding them.
  10. I think Meyer was (still is?) worth the gamble. But it might be fair to say for a player like Span, they should have gotten another player maybe? Concur. Myers looks like he can hit. KC also got more from the deal than just Shields. TB got more than just Myers, for that matter. I think the overall point though, is that "lopsided" was probably always an unfair description of that trade.
  11. Was it really lopsided? Or did many people who assume top prospects are always better than established major leaguers just think it was lopsided?
  12. I think he's right....I DO need to watch more baseball. Not sure Mrs Chief's gonna concur, though.
  13. to be fair, I've only had cable since the 40's.
  14. And it WAS a LHer on the mound. Still...I can't imagine that happening, even a week ago.
  15. We'll have to agree to disagree about what went on there.
  16. If the Twins bullpen is in the game, that is the DEFINITION of high leverage.
  17. I'm watching the Mariners feed. It's like they're watching paint dry, and trying to describe it in a low key manner.
  18. You're asking the wrong person. Check with Mrs Jerr.
