  1. Thank you both for this series. Impressive work.
  2. So smart his team went 66-41 before the trade deadline, 22-33 after. 22-34 if we include the "crapshoot."
  3. That's a long road trip...don't try to drive it all in one stretch.
  4. Heartfelt sympathies, and heartfelt thanks for a heartfelt story. You are lucky, and so was your grandpa.
  5. My strong preference is not to mess with actual game play or managerial options. I would be very opposed to limiting pitching changes, or requiring pitchers to pitch to more than one hitter. Those have always been managerial decisions and should stay that way. I also believe the growth of bullpens will eventually self correct, as managers decide they can win more games with a stronger bench than another OOGY. But I would have no problem with finding ways to speed up pace of play that don't impact actual game play. A pitch clock is an easy solution, as is requiring hitters to stay in the box and hit. Find ways to limit time between innings...first pitch of every half inning should be on its way no more than ten seconds after the last TV ad ends. Find ways to prevent managers from stalling. Consider starting games earlier...6:40 instead of 7:10. Just don't change the way the actual game is played.
  6. It doesnt seem to me an oblique injury in July would affect his ability to pull the ball in April, May, or June.
  7. Pelf strikes me as the perfect candidate for the pen. Good fastball that might tick up a couple notches, unremarkable off speed stuff, decent control and command.
  8. Some of us think it's bizarre to use WAR to judge a player. In any case, I don't think LaRoche's defense at first base is all that bad, but even if it is, isn't he going to mostly DH? Bad defense from a DH isn't all that damaging, IMO. :-)
  9. I think often hitting behind in the count has caught up to him. Stop giving away the first strike in so many ABs. .
  10. Correct. The Saints moved from Lexington to Midway in the mid 50's.
  11. I wouldn't extend Dozier. He's an asset, to be sure, but there isn't any need to do so. The Twins can simply take whatever risk arbitration presents, and avoid the risk of a guaranteed contract.
  12. My apologies for not being more clear. My take would be, while you can't ever be sure of anything in baseball, if anything Shafer has shown he's extremely unlikely to hit. He has 1200 MLB PAs...there's a reason he was freely available. I think expecting him to succeed as the LH side of a platoon, where he will get the majority of the playing time, is unlikely in the short term, and does nothing good for the long term. I'd prefer any option other than that one.
  13. My takeaway from this article: yet another confirmation of my long held opinion that the draft is an unreliable and unpredictable method of talent acquisition that needs to be supplemented by every means possible at every opportunity. I dont think the Twins are appreciably better or worse than other teams at drafting. I think they have relied too much on the draft
  14. That is both deceptive, and non- factual. :-)
  15. If enough "youths" would refuse to play minor league baseball, the pay situation would resolve itself. But I don't see any want ads asking for players to fill out minor league teams. I think in their own interests, teams will start providing proper nutrition to minor leaguers. Pay? Not so much. Not until they have to.
  16. Are you sure you want this as the standard in your next job performance review? I don't know what you do for a living, but let's say you are a salesman, one of thirty. At the start of the year, your boss tells you your goal is to sell more product than the other 29 company salesmen. You finish 2nd. You're OK with him firing you, right? You didn't meet your goal...you were unsuccessful.
  17. Jones was part of a MLB team that played Post season exhibition games against Japanese teams while I was stationed there. He and teammates (including Torii Hunter) made a visit to Yokota Air Base for a clinic for little leaguers. Jones could not have been more gracious and friendly to my two boys...of course, both boys were decked out in Twins gear, but he went out of his way to spend extra time with them and stayed late to visit. He seemed like such a nice man. I'm sure he'll make a great guest.
  18. I don't think it's safe to normalize chances for a double play. Just looking at the AL for 2014, Texas allowed 2015 runners via hit or walk, Oakland allowed 1675. That's around 2 more runners per game, which means a lot more DP chances. Nitpic, same subject: shouldn't you be using 162 games times 15 (2430) rather than 152 times 15?
  19. I can't imagine a scenario where either Dozier or Plouffe hit the waiver wire in 2015, much less both.
  20. I agree with this. I would be very surprised if both May and Meyer don't get opportunities to pitch out of the rotation in 2015, even if neither are in the rotation out of spring training. Keep in mind Meyer only threw 130 innings last year, so it isn't realistic to think he would be in a big league rotation for six months anyway. Lets get into May or June before worrying the Twins have too many starters, or refuse to put the correct ones in the rotation.
  21. The Twins had a great April offensively last year, with their second highest run total by month. In fact, April was the only month last season with a positive run differential. They went crazy offensively in August, that's true, July was dismal and September didnt quite get to April levels.
