  1. Not good, to put it midlly. Might not be a player. On another note...who here still thinks this is a good bullpen?
  2. Randball: pro tip ...make the humor obvious, so nobody could possibly miss it. ....
  3. except Shoemaker was clearly done, well prior to giving up the 3 run jack to a LH hitter. That was an awful decision, and many said so before the HR. Personally, I would have sent Pineda out for the 8th today, with a short leash, but I have no problem with starting the inning with Robles. No problem at all.
  4. I thought it odd they didn't start Thorp (or someone) in the doubleheader. Seemed like a more workable plan. Extra player and all. That also would have let Maeda and Berrios stay one behind the other in terms of rest days.
  5. I know Baldelli makes BP voluntary...leaving aside whether that's a good idea...do the Twins regularly take infield? The defense should be pretty good, but they seem to treat the baseball like a hand grenade way too often.
  6. I don't get the idea that because pitchers threw FEWER innings last season, they're somehow now expected to throw fewer innings THIS year. That seems...bass ackwards to me.
  7. Who got pushed off the 40 man? No wonder Astudillo was at 1st base for today's 1st game. Who's had a good run through. Long career.
  8. Well now you're just being ridiculous. The proper comparison here would be 20 ABs and 20 singles vs 20 PAs and 20 walks. I'll say it again...I'll take a guy with a .300 BA and a .350 OBP over a guy with a .200 BA and a .350 OBP, EVERY TIME. Batting average is still a meaningful measure of offensive performance. Always has been, always will be. Not the only one, for sure. But certainly meaningful, and one you should know about every hitter.
  9. Batting average is quite meaningful. I'll take someone who's OBP is built on hits over built on walks every time. For one thing, a single is more valuable than a walk, and for another, good pitchers aren't likely to give up walks. And beating good pitchers is required to advance in the postseason. "Advanced" statistics can add valuable insights. That does not mean "old" statistics don't. And some of the "advanced" stuff is questionable at best, junk at worst.
  10. xFIP allows you accurately judge a player? Someone's opinion of how someone should have been "expected" to perform allows you to accurately judge said someone? Non-concur. BTW, there is nothing inaccurate about batting average. It certainly leaves out much valuable information if taken in isolation, but it's 100 percent accurate.
  11. you might be right, dunno...but I don't give a hoot about the other 29 teams.
  12. Well, yeah. At the end if the day, they put a W in one column or an L in the other. It's literally all that matters. I understand there are ways to attempt to measure "effectiveness," but what does actually get you? When they start awarding playoff spots based on xFIP I'll worry more about it. In any case, "it's early" applies equally to those pointing to these measures, no?
  13. I do agree with bringing up Kirilloff. I don't know if he'll hit, but I know we can't have Cave in the every day outfield. Do it. Don't care about another year of control 7 years from now. Hell, I might be dead.
  14. Color me unimpressed with XFIP, Sierra, dohickky, or other new age hoohah. The bullpen is weak, and has directly impacted every loss. I expect the offense to be better. I think the defense is fine. Starting pitching isn't overpowering, but should keep us in plenty of games. But it's up to the pen to turn all that into W's. I don't think Falvine have done a good job of building one capable of that on a consistent enough basis. And I don't know what the fix is.
  15. Just goona be really tough to win with this bullpen. I know the offense is struggling, but hopefully that'll turn around at least some. But I don't know how you can ever trust this bullpen to win close games.
  16. seems to me if it's unwatchable, you have an easy fix.
  17. As bad as Colome was, I believe Rocco letting Shoemaker pitch to Trammell in the 6th was just about as bad a piece of managing as imaginable. And before anyone says "second guess," I said so at the time, on the game thread, before the HR. It was incredibly obvious. I already knew the bullpen isn't up to the task, so it's hard to get too upset about that. Colome's pitch to Seager might as well have been placed on a tee.
  18. The bullpen has lost all three games the Twins have dropped. Getting it done 2/3rds of the time isn't a good bullpen.
  19. I think the Twins bullpen is weak, not up to the task of winning anything significant. Really poor job this winter of strengthening an obvious hole.
  20. This bullpen isn't championship quality. Gave up a tie game twice this game. Now directly responsible for all 3 losses. How does Rogers throw that 0-2 pitch?
  21. 84 Fleer update Kirby Puckett, which is his actual rookie card. I tried, at one time, to collect every single Puckett card. I believe I was successful, but it's hard to know. Cereal card boxes, marbles with Puckett's picture imbedded...there were SO many, and there would always seem to be another weird one I'd stumble on after much research. I have well over 200 different Puckett "cards." Anywho...Puckett 84 Fleer update. I have one in near mint condition. I also have, I believe, every 61 Topps Twins card.
  22. Really nice to see Polanco hit the ball hard into a gap twice today, even if one got caught. 1st half 2019 Jorge would be pretty huge for the offense.
  23. Was nice to see Polanco hit a couple balls hard to the gap, even if one got caught. He's pretty important to this lineup. We need something closer to 1st half 2019 Jorge.
