  1. Whit Merrifield: Last 7 days .375/.429/.675 Last 14 days .322/.364/,509 28 days .286/,325/,429 He's a career .287 hitter. Hit .277 last year. Widely regarded as one of the tougher outs in MLB. He'll be in high demand this July. So yeah, I'm quite comfortable stating he's not a .220 hitter. And he smoked one up the alley off yet another middle middle nothing pitch from Duffey. No. Way. I. Let. Duffey. Pitch. To. Merrifield. Speaking if Duffey...you know what opposing hitters are teeing off on him this year? .278/.316/.514 That's right, he's given up an .830 OPS to opposing hitters. He's not very good. Hasnt been for a while.. and yes....prone to coughing up leads.
  2. Whit Merrifield is not a .220 hitter, I don't care what's happened so far in 2020. Comparing him to Gordon is laughable. It's hard to take you seriously when you say things like this. In any case you're digging your heels in over 1 hitter. It does happen to be the hitter who got the 2 run double. I probably am biased against Duffey. I'm biased against relievers prone to coughing up leads. Call me crazy.
  3. I absolutely have Duran ready for Merrifield. Duran didn't pitch Wed, only 14 pitches Tuesday, none Monday There is no chance I let Duffey pitch to Merrifield in that situation. Duran is warming immediaty after the 1st batter reaches. There was time. Even if you make a terrible decision and let Duffey cough up the lead, Duran HAS to be in vs Benintendi. Awful managing. There's zero reason Duran can't be asked for 5 outs, given the bad pen options and Duffey clearly struggling. Duran was getting the 9th anyway. Have him readying as soon as one hitter reaches vs Duffey.
  4. I dont know everything, but I Sure Know Something. Given how few starters Wanna Rock And Roll All Night these days, the idea of an Ace might be gone Forever. It'd be nice if they could Shock Me and have a Mr Speed or God Of Thunder atop the rotation. But my Tears Are Fallin' because I see only a Duece in our future.
  5. They don't and have never. At least in my (considerable) lifetime. But it doesn't matter anyway. Somebody step up and accumulate some RBI. Then we'd have fewer no matter how you count em.
  6. Said so all winter: need bullpen help. Said so on opening day: stupid idea to trade Rogers. Really stupid. As for now, sure. Try to get legit help. Good luck. Prepare to deal some of that "pitching pipeline" to get anyone who is a legit upgrade. If you can even find an available reliever or two in May.
  7. MLB has never counted LOB in that manner. Here's the entire MLB box score, "Team LOB 12": https://www.mlb.com/gameday/royals-vs-twins/2022/05/26/661771#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=661771
  8. As for the game, I don't understand: -how Duffey is allowed to cough up 3 runs without even having another reliever warming up. I understand there are times when you just have to trust the guy you brought in...but this wasn't such a situation. - how we get 2 OF singles with a runner on 1st and don't score. I realize ww lose the DH if we pinch run for Sanchez in the 8th, but...it's a 1 run game on the 8th. - if Buxton is so injured he can't attempt a SB in a one run deficit in the 9th, why isn't he on the IL? -what does Gordon provide?
  9. The Twins outhit the Royals 12 to 6 and left a whopping 30 runners on base The Twins did not leave 30 runners on base. That's not even physically possible in a 9 inning game. For the record, it was 12.
  10. Well, I guess. I have another name for that, but to each his own. I rode LRT both ways twice this week. Zero issues or concerns, except internet connection on my phone through that *** **** tunnel by the airport.
  11. There are a lot of valid issues raised here. Even though I dont live in the area, I get to games fairly often and here are some things that might help: - I don't think coming downtown exposed one to more crime risk than anywhere else. - park for free at Mall of America and ride light rail downtown. Dropped off literally right at a TF gate. Dropped off back at MOA. $5 round trip. -there's a family food section behind CF on the main concourse level. $2 soda $2 hotdogs every day. I don't drink beer so I don't know the price, but it's something like $4. They have cheap nachos and such too. - while you're there, the mini donut stand is right next door. $6 for a pretty big bag, enough for 2 or 3 people. Upper deck skyline seats are cheap. Get them at the park and save the service fees. If you have a military ID, take advantage. I got lower seats 13 rows from the left field line Monday night for $13.50. You can go to a Twins game for not much more than a movie, and the food can actually be cheaper.
  12. Just wanted to say that while I don't always agree with your takes, Matt, I ALWAYS enjoy your writing. Always lots of good stuff to chew on, written in an easy to understand but entertaining way. Thanks!
  13. I gave praise to the 3rd base coach and Twins baserunning earlier this week. Today, although it might not have mattered, I really feel like Celestino has to score on Arraez's single in the 10th, even with no out. The ball was obviously down, a little into right center, fairly deep when fielded, and there wouldn't have even been a throw. With Buxton on first, not being held, I think there's a decent chance he then goes 1st to 3rd. Now the tying run is on 3rd with no outs. It ended up maybe not mattering, but that really bugged me. Also, we need better pen options. We've gotten by to date, but it can't last as constructed.
  14. We sometimes give the third base coach crap when someone gets thrown out at home. How about a shout out when he and Kep combined on a beautiful, heads up baserunning play to score the Twins first run. Kepler was off with the pitch and ran hard around second, never taking anything for granted. When the third base coach saw the LFer lob the ball into 2nd, he waived Kepler home, scoring easily. Awesome, heads up, aggressive baseball. Way cool.
  15. It looked to me like Archer was fairly lucky to get through 4. I think it was exactly the right move. But I've always been a "better too early than too late" guy. It's one of the things I feel Rocco does very well. By comparison, I grew to hate watching Molitor trudge out to the mound with a desultory look on his face to take the ball from his starter AFTER said starter had given up 3 with runners still on the corners.
  16. Or getting 2 PAs against the LH starter, who's only going to see the opponent lineup twice.
  17. Platoons have always been an easy way to squeeze extra production out of a given position. It's just been increasingly more difficult to do as pitching staffs have grown in size over time and gobbled up roster spots. He's a good fit for the Twins because a team is going to carry more than three OFers and the Twins regular corners are lefties at the plate. Garlick's particularly strong bat against lefty pitching is perfect. The platoon advantage is real. No sense fighting it. Where you can, use it.
  18. Nitpic: I could be wrong but I remember it as 2 of 3.
  19. Nice job Nick. A completely cromulent compilation covering current...um... ... week.
  20. I've said this before: there are no "low leverage" relievers in a modern pen. You're using 3, 4 maybe 5 relievers every night. Most professional baseball games are close, it's just the nature of the game. EVERYone in the pen is going to be in a position to win or lose games, and not just as an oddity. A manager can't just use 3 or 4 guys for 4 innings every close game. I'm not a Rocco apologist, by any means, but he needs an inning of performance, minimum, when he puts a guy into a game in the middle innings, no matter the guy. And He doesn't have the luxury of having another guy already warmed and ready when a Cano starts an inning. Cano needs to perform. The problem really is not Rocco leaving Cano in too long. The problem is not providing Rocco with enough good options. Blame Cano. Or Falvine.
  21. Except Lewis is specifically playing other positions currently in St Paul. That was specifically mentioned when he was sent down, and he's played both 3rd and LF since then. Not to mention, if in contention, there's no way they trade Correa. No chance. None.
  22. Bell and Eovaldi would both be very good fits. I think they need bullpen help, but I don't trust Lopez.
