What's new here is the "opener" concept, which can complicate platooning, since the "bulk guy" is basically the starter, only he comes in some time after the "opener," and may not pitch with the same hand. A manager may be forced into making a platoon decision way early. But platooning itself is as old as the advent of LH pitching. Which is to say, it's always been around. Tom Kelly used to use Mike Pagliarulo and Scotty Lieus at 3rd. Earl Weaver platooned. Casey Stengel. Etc etc. It's an age old way to try to squeeze a little more offense out of a position, since the platoon advantage/disadvantage is real, and almost universal. If your roster was big enough you'd ideally like to platoon most EVERY position. Your issues with Gallo are another issue entirely. And you should have the same, or worse issues with Luplow, BTW. Luplow is, if anything, a worse hitter than Gallo and a worse defender as well. The problem is having Gallo and Luplow as your choices, not Rocco trying to maximize his poor options.

Once again, to quote an old sage: "There's just not enough thrust there to develop the escape velocity needed to overcome the heavy gravitational pull of .500."

Just don't try to pawn off no *** **** pineapple pizza. Which, by the way, ain't pizza. And kudos on bringing the expensive beer. Some folks try to sneak in with the cheap stuff.

Is It Time to Worry About Jhoan Duran?
USAFChief replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Concur. And the vast majority are 1 inning outings. Only 7 times all season pitching back to back days, Only once 3 days in a row. They've been very careful NOT to overwork him. -
1. I believe this article is about 2023. There are no free agent 1st basemen currently available, AFAIK. 2. Here's the list of 2024 free agent 1st basemen. Which of these should the Twins give 1st base to next year? https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/1st-base/

"(Martin) also doesn’t have power, and frankly, that may only help the Twins" Um, what? Lack of power isnt an asset in any context. It's a deficiency. Not necessarily a fatal deficiency, to be sure, but a deficiency nonetheless. If he were able to play a good CF and maintain a .380 OBP, with some genuine speed, he could overcome that lack of power and be a useful player. I'd take that over MAT. But it's really, really doubtful Martin could do that in MLB. Almost impossible with a sub .300 BA.

This article is just poorly thought out. It is in actuality an argument for Vazquez getting ABs over other 1st base options. Because that's the net effect. And frankly I'd rather have Solano or Gallo in the lineup over Vazquez.

Yup, and It's been that way for weeks. One good slider, then two bad ones...either missing badly outside the zone, or missing badly IN the zone. Not commanding his fastball either, but the major issue is the slider.

14 catchers had 100 or more games last year. 120-ish games at catcher used to be the standard, and there's no reason it couldn't be today.

I hope none of the people bemoaning the bullpen are the same people who were glad the FO sat on their hands while bullpen help was available. Don't blame Rocco for his options.

A couple thoughts: Some pretty snazzy Twins defense tonight. There were some bad ABs tonight, but in the 6th both Kepler and Walner battled their tails off, and both paid off great ABs with key hits. It appears maybe Jax is working himself out of Rocco's Circle Of Trust.

What Twins Free Agent Starter Do the Twins Bring Back?
USAFChief replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My point is, move away from the idea of a "#5 starter." That's not a useful way to imagine a rotation. Much like "he's just fine batting at the bottom of the order" is a poor rationalization for a poor hitter, "he's an OK #5" is a poor rationalization for a below average starter. Aim higher. Aim higher than Randy Dobnak.- 69 replies
