  1. so you trade a guy that you describe as a potential All Star for some middling prospect? Cripes. I want you in my fantasy league
  2. If Vargas works, then Sano stays down. If Vargas falters, then they hope Arcia is ready. If the Twins look like they will be contending at the end of August, both Bux and Sano come up.
  3. I see Paul Blair kind of skills. I hope Tim Raines
  4. I think Torii's leadership will be better tested when they have a losing streak. Bound to happen. You know, every team loses approximately 70 games. That's a lot of long plane trips and time to think about a slump. Torii reminds these guys they are just lucky to be playing a kids game at their ages. In The Show. So the vibe has been that of a young clubhouse with some good energy and chemistry. But what I like best is that it is the oldest among them that is showing them how to be young.
  5. I just laugh at those who were against Torii's signing, and want him gone. Obviously, that sentiment has little to do with baseball or the results on the field. The Twins may not be above .500 if Torii wasn't wearing a Twins jersey.
  6. What a person chooses to remember about a player says more about the critic than the player. Torii is a man with an opinion. Get over that. This guy is the real deal, and the fact that he doesn't milquetoast pander or be politically correct is one reason why he is an undisputed leader. There is a reason so many teams wanted him. He is an authentic person, which is refreshing in this day and age
  7. Which is why one of Paul Molitor's first acts was to call Torii.
  8. What doesn't get mentioned by posters is that not only was Zuke an All Star last year, but he has the respect of the pitching staff and his teammates generally. He gets timely hits, and is a tough out. Catching is still a defensive position and good receivers are rare. I mean, look, Bob Boone was an allstar catcher for many years, and his batting average hovered around the Mendoza line a lot. There are only so many Mike Piazzas and Johnny Benches. I'd like to see the Twins draft the best catcher available (BCA?) and that means they need to rely on Zuke through 2016 , and maybe Pinto for a year after that to prove he belongs in the show as a number 1. Pinto needs to work on things defensively. That is why they put him in AAA where he will play a lot more than if he had a part time backup gig in Minnesota. Hermann is a fill in, like Butera, only without the defense. For now, I think the Twins are handling the position about as well as they can. And I would be 100 percent against giving up our developing prospects to upgrade a position that is considered a defensive spot on most rosters.
  9. Ummm Nick, Paul has made adjustments all season and has the Twins playing way over their heads.
  10. Well, I dunno. The people of Minnesota like bitching about things. What else can explain them electing both Jesse the Body and Al Franken?
  11. These kinds of threads always tick me off. Why? Because they are whiny and overly critical. And in a mean way. These players are not cardboard paper dolls. They are youngsters. Danny hit .319 last year and took one for the team playig out of position. I think Paul is going to let him stick for the year, and he should. Willy Mays went 0 for 12 when he made the show. Danny will get it right. And to those who think he should be down in AAA, why wouldn't you want Molly and Bruno to coach him through the slumps? Those who think about player development would want Danny around Molly. Period.
  12. Eventually, Ryan will have to deal with a log jam of big hitters with limited defensive skills. Arcia, Vargas and Sano. Of these, as far as hitting goes, I worry least about Vargas. Sano and Arcia are both kind of stubborn, bent on pull hitting. Vargas showed signs of power early, but this year had a loss in power as he embraced the concept of hitting it where it is pitched. He'll work that out. When he gets hot he can carry a team. Heck, same goes for Sano and Arcia. It would be fun to hit these guys back to back to back. But.... I don't see the Twins keeping all three.
  13. I have to agree with this. Span was a solid CF, but when you have a chance to get a dominant pitcher, its a risk you have to take. Plus, the Twins at the time felt they had other guys in CF. Revere, Hicks and a minor system bringing up Bux and Rosario etc. They need to change the mindset of pitching to contact. Get guys with rare stuff and be patient. Because those guys need it. Nobody was talking about Nolan Ryan in 1967-68. He had to work through wildness early in his career too. I think the Twins know their SP is a log jam and Milone deserves the next promotion, but their bullpen needs fresh arms. So this move is maybe Meyer's quickest route to the show.
  14. But then, that's because you are friendly and accepting. There are others on here that would misdirect his plane.
  15. this thread is all wrong. It's supposed to be "Where's Waldo?" as in Oswaldo. Mr. Arcia, come back quickly. We need something to induce folks to buy those right field seats.
  16. If Sano can't play 3B, he cant't play outfield. I could see a future infield of Sano/Plouffe, Santana (Gordon), Dozier and Mauer/Vargas. OF of Plouffe/Rosario, Buxton and Hicks. What I'd like to see is the Twins draft the best catcher available as soon as possible.
  17. nothing like a bench fulla banjo hitters, I always say
  18. Memo to Mikey and Justin. Hey Dudes. We're getting the band back together. Me and Joe, we're partying. And the kids are buying the first rounds man. They are good kids. This guy Doze. He rakes, but he thinks the plate is only 6 inches wide. Never seen him even try to go opposite field. Justin, you get him. You cured that pull hitter insanity just before you won the batting title. And this cat Arcia. I bet he can hit it 500 feet in bedroom slippers. Vargas? I mean really. He has a hole in his swing, but Cuddy, you can help with that. Its the same hole you have always had. When he fixes it.... imagine Big Papi as a switch hitter Justin, you will have to share time with Joe. Shouldn't be a problem. You guys were roomies once and you KNOW you are streaky. When you are hot, Joe can sign autographs up on the concourse while you play. Be good PR. It's a short tour though. Just for this year. My contract feels like a one night stand. It will be fun though. They have a ton of kids that wanna play. We can maybe take September off. Besides, These Farewell Tours sometimes last a while. The Eagles did their Farewell Tout about 5 years ago and they are still hanging together. Whaddayasay? Torii #48
  19. I thought about this ridiculous thread when Torii started hitting, and then again when he went 4 for 4 yesterday. I am glad to see Torii shutting up a lot of critics, if only for the time being. And getting thrown out (by a mile) trying to stretch a single is evidence that his go for it mentality is alive and well.Torii is a notoriously slow starter, but saying he is "done" is just mean. And what's more, the Twins recent hot streak may be evidence that the attitude is catching on. I give Torii his share of credit for the team's rebound. And pleeeeeese. Molitor has been around baseball a long time, and one of the first things he did was try to get #48 to come play for at least a year. So give Molly credit for knowing how to build a winning attitude on a team. He's been on a lot of them.

    How fun is this?

Nolasco reminds me of Jesse Crain BEFORE he learned the slider. His fastball was straight too.
  21. Gardy almost seemed to have his mind made up before the game even started sometimes. Very rigid in his thinking. And he played favorites. A good baseball man, sure, but he didn't seem to adapt as well to th ereality on teh field. Molly sees what is happening and adjusts to counter it. He is less rigid in his thinking and more likely to make a change when indicated. Nothing Mollly has done so far is genius though, just mostly common sense. Aside from handling prima donna athletes with gold chains and fat wallets, a good high school coach can manage a major league team. It is not rocket science. You go with what works. Gardy's stubborn nature overcame his common sense way to often.
  22. Never mind, Dozier just hit one, so now we know
  23. Earl Weaver's recipe for success in Ballamore was "Pitching, Defense, and the Three Run Homer" I think he listed them in their order of importance to his team. But that is not to say that he couldn't have won with a different sort of team. The thing is, pitching comes first. Ask any coach on their way to the draft at any level. They are looking for pitching. It is 1/2 of the game. The Twins are gonna spend 100 to 125 Mil on a roster, they may as well pay a lot of that to pitchers who can control 1/2 of perhaps 60 games. Pitching is a good platform to build a team around. That is why great pitching is so rare. But it is a difference maker. Defense was also mentioned before hitting. Earl's view doesn't mean he didn't prize hitting. I mean, he had Frank and Brooks Robinson to go with Boog. But he also had two great outfielders in Buford and Blair. And a great defense. You wonder how the Birds had 4 twenty game winners? Well first of all a four man rotation and great defense played parts.I mean, Belanger and Dave Johnson and Brooks in an infield? Get outtatown. (INSERT LOUD SIGH HERE) The Twins pitching is suspect and has been since the days of Santana and Liriano. Lets be honest. That is the Twins' last dominant tandem in a long time. Both had dominant stuff. And you need that kinda stuff to go deep in the playoffs. Two shutouts to start a series always works. The defense is weak. The three run homer? What is that?
  24. Talk about missing the point much? Going for it brings the risk of failure, or success. These guys are risk adverse, so they never really have a shot at anything spectacular. Tin Cup went for it ten times. He finally holed the ball... Even if you go for it, you might only win once in ten. But that tenth time is awesome.
