Article: Can The Twins Win With Dozier And Mauer?
kellyvance replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Look, Dozier is by far NOT the problem and Joe is producing. He is high on hits with RISP and OBP. He is a veteran and there is nobody I'd rather see up there with the game on the line. No the problem is less than ordinary pitching. And to those who say Dozier doesn't drive in enough runs.... they hit him leadoff. If, for example he had 1 guy on last year when he homered, that is 84 RBIs just on his homers. Twins fans like to bitch. But these two guys are two of the biggest reasons they are in contention. Nick should have found some other negative article to write How about, the Twins are so so because they think hiring a 44 year old washed up thrower seems like the thing to do in a pennant race. Somebody give Nick a hug. Seems overdue -
A Change Coming In The Twins Dugout?
kellyvance commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Two words: Mike Redmond. -
If we keep Dozier, it answers more questions .... Dozier should hit 3, not 1. Too many homers are solos. Bux needs to learn the leadoff position, or else Polanco gets it. Mauer should hit 2. Sano 4, Kepler 5 and on and on. I am ok with the Twins keeping Dozier. No reason they can't play better this year. Nowhere to go but up But I don't understand why so many people think acquiring a couple pitching prospect is the answer. The Twins have plenty of pitching prospects. Same goes for Ervin. He is the only starter that we could ever pair up with another teams's #1 and have any hope of winning. Again, he is a proven. I don't see how you improve by trading your best power bat and best pitcher.

Dozier has gotten better the last 4 years. His HR totals are 18, 23, 28 and 42. Like I said, steadily getting better. It isn't a one year thing, it is an upward trend.

Those who denigrate Dozier's contributions ignore that he has been improving every year. Will he "revert to form" it is hard to say. But he has been on an upward trajectory for several years and deserves respect for that. Indications are that he is getting better, not worse.

I wasn't comparing lifetime stats and I don't see how anyone can read my post as saying that. My point was that, in 1964, you don't trade the Killer for a bag full of magic beans and the same goes for Dozier. You seem to deliberately take it out of context.

Oh bull. Who was the last Twin to hit 40 homers before Dozier? Yeah....not Hrbek, Kirby or anyone else. .. and Dozier can run, steal bases and field. Killebrew was a slugger. A very prolific slugger, but he was not an all around player like Dozier. I made this point to show how out of whack some folks thinking is to think of dealing Dozier for a couple kids with potential. The Twins brass know they need to get a ton in return for Dozier. They are right to hold out.

Home runs are still valued more than anything... a home run hitter can make a huge difference. And last time I looked, you still won by scoring more runs than the other team.I am wondering if we aren't seeing owners clamping down, sort of like in the collusion era. But there is no way that you value pitching prospects over a proven run producer....who fields well, steals bases and is a team leader.

Two players had more homers than Doze last year....two. in all of baseball. Guys "still on the market" so what? They will all find a home. Trading a standout like Doze you don't do unless the haul is massive

Much of your reply misses my point completely. 40 HR guys are extremely rare. Unlike Killer, Doze can play defense and run. He is a 5 tool infielder. Prospects mean the same as potential. "You ain't done anything yet" And it doesn't matter what Brew's era in baseball was like. My point is you don't trade a top player in all of baseball for a bag of magic beans.

Which is my point. 40 HR hitters are extremely rare these days. You see a lot of people who want to trade for a couple unprovens. I don't think so. If the Twins had a couple other HR guys, maybe we could afford to lose power. Thing is, the Twins should not be batting their best power producer leadoff, and one of their least powerful bats third. Its bass ackwards.

Would you have traded Harmon Killebrew for a possible back end starter that has never won in the Bigs in 1965? Didn't think so. Dozier has OF/1B/3B power as a decent middle infielder. He gets two possible "soon to right now" starters or we bat him 3rd all next year.

Berrios starts as our #5 SP out of ST. He has nothing more to prove in the minors and it isn't like we have anyone great blocking him. Santana, May, Gibson, Santiago and Berrios with Duffy in the BP as a set up man

Article: Arbitration Decisions Looming
kellyvance replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Which is why I am in the non tender to Santiago camp. Look, we have had too many guys waiting for a spot that we need to know about. Which makes it seem like we cut Ricky and Meyer. I can live with that. Take the 8 million, add another 5-8 and try to get someone capable of being a number 3. I'd tender the other three. Gibbie, because he is still capable of getting it together for a string of games. The relief pitchers will be so so, but they haven't done anything to justify jettisoning them until they show that they suck in April or May. Esco is a valuable Swiss Army Knife.- 59 replies

You don't name names unless you have permission from the guy you quote. Ask any reporter who quotes an "unnamed source." But you can take my word for it. And my word has been good enough for judges in six states, as well as a couple of governors and congressmen, who have consulted me.over the past 30 years or so. . .

Nope, just holding up a mirror to the haters. Some of you will see yourselves differently. Those who don't see yourselves are probably vampires. I am in favor of the additions because they are all positive influences. Winning starts with a positive mental attitude. And it is not unfair to point out that critics are, well, critical.

There are people in this group that would find fault with a birthday cake. Nothing will ever work, and all is doom and gloom. Torrii is a racist and homophobe. blah blah blah I doubt that I am the only one who gets a little tired of these unforgiving negative types. They are tiresome and always unfair. For the record, I heard from a former Twin who was there that the scuffle between Justin and Torrii was "no big deal." A Twin told me this. So drop it already. Things like that happen on every team. . These three guys are leaders, and that is something the Twins desperately need. This is not a spring training deal. These guys will be around the club a lot. They will be like extra coaches. And will teach the young guys how to act. Those who carp that these guys never won a world series show their ignorance. Yeah, neither did Ted Williams. So he must have sucked right? Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl. Like I said, unfair. When you win a championship it takes the entire team, and a lot of luck. But it starts with a winning attitude. And that, more than any other trait, is what haters lack.So its no wonder that they criticize this move. They just don't understand how important a good attitude is.

Cuddyer's specialty as a player was swinging at curve balls in the dirt for strike 3. Torii is a right winger. Hawk was on the, oh hell, I can't keep this up. All the gas thrower flamers and haters will hate this move, just as they hated Hunter coming back in 2015. The rest of us will say that Torii had a lot to do with the Twins overachieving that year. This has to help. Torii and Mike will have a huge influence on young outfoielders. Lord knows we need help in the pitching staff, so Hawk is welcome here.He has been around and learned a lot. And by bringing them in to fill permanent positions, it is going to help all season long. This team can use all the help it can get. Adding 3 leaders who are team first guys is a great place to start.

Article: Out With The Old
kellyvance replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You don't improve pitching by trading your best pitcher. You try to get more like him. Doze stays unless an offer blows our skirt up. Sano gets installed at 3rd. Mauer stays. Trevor is traded for whatever you can get for him. Polanco is the SS, Escobar the utility guy. Grossman goes, and we take long looks at Gordon and Walker in ST. The idea of moving Dozier to the outfield is beyond dumb. No offense. We all say stuff that is dumb occasionally. Middle infielders with power are very rare. -
Article: What Are Molitor's Infields Telling Us?
kellyvance replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We don't trade Doze. Criminy, he's our best player. How does sending him away help us? Nobody is going to give up a stud starter for a second baseman anyway. And you don't give away a guy who is getting better every year and is a threat to hit 40 big flies. Polanco is getting a long audition. He should. The guy can hit. 3B is already crowded enough without playing him there. EE is a super utility from now on. Sorry all you EE fans. When Sano's arm is healthy he is the 3b. Plouffe is on the bubble. Paul wanted to showcase him for a trade and that is why Sano went to RF for a while. But Plouffe can't stay healthy. Park is done. ST will decide whether EE or DannySan sticks as a utility guy. I think Sano, Planco, Doze and Mauer are the IF of the next year. Gordon isn't ready. Mauer is a cornerstone of the team and sells lots of jerseys. So its between Vargas and Plouffe for the PH bat, and Vargas switch hits. OF should be Rosario, Bux and Kep. Grossman is expendable. Twins hoped Park could hit, same with Arcia and Vargas. But they never fit into the long term blueprint.Gross too. We have better guys than Gross on the farm. Lord knows what Shafe is doing up instead of Walker. Shafe's ceiling is so low a short guy has to duck to watch him play on TV.- 61 replies

Article: Examining Arbitration-Eligible Players
kellyvance replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are two ways of assessing value: value in a trade and value to the team. Gibson has been one of our main starters for a couple years now and it is really weird to hear people talk about dumping him while keeping Santiago or Milone. Gibson is better than those guys and will be a great extension candidate, since he is still young and fairly cheap to keep. Santiago is a guy that could be a #5, so we consider him. Milone can't break a pane of glass with his fastball, so he is expendable. I like Ian and Pressley for cheap bullpen arms. I see a rotation of Santana, Gibby, Duff, May and Berrios. Santiago in long relief. I think there is a market for a healthy Plouffe. Plouffe has power and plays a good, if not great 3b. Why not have Trevor in a swing role between 3b, 1b and DH? I know 10 million is a high price for a bench bat, but he is a bench bat with power at least. Vargas should be moved. He is too limited, but that was what they said about Ortiz. Sano is under motivated, if talented. Sano should have to win the job, not just be given it. And Sano needs to show more discipline at the (dinner) plate. Escobar is the SS, despite Polanco being given a long audition. Polanco lacks a true SS arm. So... I'd try to move Vargas and Santana. Danny needs a true shot at SS and he won't get it here. Besides we have other guys. Nobody mentioned Grossman, and I like him, but don't we have better guys? I don't think we keep him if we keep Danny. -
Is Molitor Mismanaging Minnesota?
kellyvance commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Gee whiz. What an overly negative assessment. I mean, saying Molitor wants to "wash his hands of him" about Bux is absurd. Even the stupidest manager in baseball would not wash his hands of a low 20s player viewed as the number 1 prospect. Bux needs to hit when he is called up, but he looks like the guy we thought he was, defensively, speed wise etc. His hitting will come around. Lefty Gomez took one look at Tony Oliva and said "The kid will never hit in the big leagues." Hasty judgments are bitter when you have to eat your words. As for Sano, he is undisciplined at the (dinner) plate. He needs to drop 20 pounds and make his swing quicker and be more athletic. Molly basically challenged him, and it worked. I have been saying for two years, "Let the kids play." Well, when the kids play they make mistakes and need to grow and learn. It doesn't happen overnight. The team that was Champs in 1987 and 1991 (so long ago) didn't tear up the league in their rookie years. Molly worked with the kids on this team as a minor league instructor. He knows them and they respect him. Makes me wonder what Molly could do with even an average pitching staff. But calling for Molly to get fired seems unfair. He is a brilliant guy who is managing the team based on having kids that still lack baseball IQs in some cases. A manager needs at least 3 years, especially with the mess Molly inherited, and that is without an overall youth movement.
