  1. I've always thought of the Northwest Angle as a chimney.
  2. Best thing about driving across Nebraska nowadays is the 80 mph speed limit! In fact, that may be the only good thing. But it makes all the bad things more tolerable.
  3. And some have pointed out that Kitzler's strength is keeping guys off the bases, not striking out two guys with inherited runners at second and third. Wise bullpen usage IMHO.
  4. It's so difficult to compare someone (Gordon) who is just a year or so away from MLB with someone who has never played a professional game. Maybe we should have a multivariate ranking scheme with ratings for potential, risk, and likely time to MLB. How one would aggregate these into a single ranking would depend on the situation. A team that is close to contention would place more weight on how soon the player would reach the big club. A team that is building for a more distant future might put more emphasis on potential.
  5. Yes. The idea that a veteran opponent firstbaseman would congratulate a kid on his first hit really brings out the fraternity of ballplayers. I would guess that we at TD probably "hate" the White Sox players more than the Twins players do.
  6. It seems to me that Granite is the victim of good health. Have the Twins had any field player go on the DL this year? In almost 3 months? In a normal year probably one of Mauer, Vargas, Grossman, Rosario, Buxton, and Kepler is on the DL at almost any point in time, which means that Granite can come up and play the OF (with Grossman to DH if it's Mauer or Vargas who is injured). I don't want to hope for injuries, but when the inevitable happens Granite might get his chance.
  7. Agreed! I don't speak Spanish, but I know a little about which syllable should be accented, and Per-EZ drives me up the wall! (Kind of like people who pretend that "data" are singular rather than plural.)
  8. How can you like Colorado's shape more than Wyoming's?
  9. We moved here in 1988. By 1999, our house had tripled in value and seemed very expensive. (Of course it's doubled again since.)
  10. No kidding! My wife and I freaked out traveling across Europe. The green cross over there is just a symbol for a standard pharmacy. Driving through tiny villages and seeing green crosses kind of freaked us out until we figured out that it meant something different.
  11. It's all in where you live and work. I live a mile from campus, so a 20 minute walk when the weather is decent or a 5 minute drive when it's not. Agreed about missing baseball, but it's kind of nice not to have a die-hard local following rooting against the Twins. Many locals are Mariners' fans, but few are intense and many follow their childhood clubs from wherever. I've spent most of my adult life rooting against the local teams where I've lived. It gets old.
  12. I think of Portland as 2/3 Minneapolis and 1/3 Bay Area. I've lived both places and loved both places, so it's no surprise that I love Portland. I've been told that Portland was settled more by Easterners in comparison to Seattle by Midwesterners, but I sure don't see much Boston or New York in the people here.
  13. When I read the title, I wasn't sure which kind of "promotion" you meant. When I saw the picture of the hideous Star Wars uniforms, I actually thought it was the other kind (until I read, of course). I love having your picture, Seth, but if the Star Wars uniforms were on my hard drive, I'd wear out the delete key.
  14. Seems like he will need an injury to one of Rosario, Buxton, Kepler, Grossman, Vargas, or Mauer to find a spot. I don't think Grossman and Vargas can coexist on the roster as essentially pure DHs. Actually, it's pretty amazing that all six of those guys have been healthy all season and we're already into June. (Or was Vargas hurt for a bit?)
  15. I think maybe that's what you meant...
  16. I was distracted and didn't watch every at-bat (and had to watch the Seattle broadcast because of blackout rules), but every hit I saw was a ground ball to short for which Adrianza lunged and missed. From what I saw it seemed like if Lindor had been playing SS behind him, he might have had a quite respectable result.
  17. Adrianza *almost makes* every play tonight. Are the Mariners just lucky and placing the ball perfectly, or is his range compromised?
  18. But Mejia has a BIG shovel and just keeps digging.
  19. The most amazing celebration I can remember for someone who was not #1 overall. He and his family recognized what a wonderful opportunity he had received, and his attitude since then has been 100% positive.
  20. Wow, McKay looks like he's about to cry after getting picked 4th. Contrast with Berrios a few years ago...
  21. How about "Biggie"? Kind of like "Miggie" when your allergies are really, really bad.
  22. I agree 100%. There is nothing better than Twins games starting at 5:00 PT (or 4:00 from the East) and finishing before my (early) bedtime. I get into routines and find it hard to break them. A couple of years ago I lived in Europe during much of the English football season. I was so used to watching my favorite team at 7am Pacific time that it was really difficult to watch in the afternoon, which is the "normal" time.
