  1. Don't they say that good bitching beats good hitting?
  2. "WPA of +0.1: Kepler .847, Littell .288, Magill .288, Duffey .288, Rosario .263, Pineda .235, Rogers .144, Parker .144 "WPA of -0.1: Harper -.129, Schoop -.161, Cave -.165, Cron -.228, Garver -.240, Morin -.289, Polanco -.294, Sano -.433" Wow! Kepler (et al.) giveth and Sano (et al.) taketh away! Here's a question for someone with more energy than I: The WPA for the whole team (in a win) adds up to 0.5, increasing from an initial 0.5 to 1.0. Adding up the absolute values of just these players yields 4.142! Adding in the other players not shown here gives 4.349. This must be close to a record, but does anyone know what the record is?
  3. Thanks for the report. This is probably the experience of a lifetime for a lot of these players. Even many of the stars on AA teams don't end up seeing much time in the majors, so despite their hopes and perhaps expectations, these occasions often turn out to be career highlights. Good luck to them tonight!
  4. To change the subject slightly (or perhaps to return to the original topic), isn't it next year that rosters expand to 26? If that's the case, then every team will have an extra slot on the MLB roster to "stash" a Rule V pick. It seems like that would make it more likely that a marginal player would be selected, no?
  5. But Rochester wasn't working for him either. If he needs confidence, maybe a short vacation in Pensacola or even Ft. Myers would be useful. Let him have 5-10 appearances down there and see if he can get the ball in the strike zone, keep it in the park, and start to find a groove. If so, then bring him back to Rochester and see if he can keep it going. Then, maybe, back to the Twins. Remember, this guy was at the top of our prospect charts a couple of years ago. He's not a Rochester-shuttle/AAAA-filler player. If we are going to realize benefit from this asset, we really need to groom him for the long term.
  6. FWIW, I think I could strike out Stevie Wonder (assuming I could find the strike zone).
  7. "In the fourth round they targeted Write State third baseman Seth Gray. Gray was teammates at Write State with Twins 2018 pick, and 2019 Midwest League All-Star, Gabe Snyder." Wright State? Orville and Wilbur would not be happy.
  8. And part of that may have been the instability of the zone itself. I don't remember a game in which there have been more pitches on which the umpire disagreed with the TV tracker.
  9. "In his second rehab game with the Miracle, DH Nelson Cruz finished 1-for-3 with a strikeout. It’s looking likely he could rejoin the Twins in Cleveland. Lewis finished 2-for-4 and stole his 10th base of the season." Gotta start reading more carefully. I skipped a line and thought it said that Cruz had stolen his 10th base, which would be pretty good for two games at his age.
  10. Harsh on Larnach! But I can't disagree. This is one of the things not to like about rankings: there are times when two or more deserve the prize (and times when no one does).
  11. I would hazard an outsider's guess that more than half of most MLB rosters would qualify medically for the IL for one reason or another at any point in time. That leaves a lot of room for strategic "injuries" (and also for players to "gut it out" or fail to inform the club of their maladies in order to try to boost their stats).
  12. From the Chicago Sun-Times: How cool is it that other teams are starting to think they should emulate our Twins and putting them together with Boston and Houston?
  13. Did Kaat ever do a game with Vin Scully? I'd watch that just for the commentary!
  14. Injury did not look good. I just hope he is back for September.
  15. I wonder if it matters that Detroit has Hildenberger's former pitching coach (and manager). Would they have any insights on his gimmicky delivery that might not be generally available and would help their hitters?
  16. Must be "regression-to-the-mean" day (as well as Mother's Day). Slumping Gonzalez and the bottom three in the order went 9-for-14. The rest of the team---the guys who have all the gaudy stats so far---went 1-for-23.
  17. "That was followed by the fourth home run of the season, a grand slam that gave the Wings a 6-3 lead." Did I miss the part where you told us who hit it?
  18. From a Jay's blog ("BlueBirdBanter") in discussing the Twin's 7 runs in the first three innings: "Suffice to say that y=2^x-1 (where y is the other team’s runs and x is the innings) is not a winning formula, even if it it’s it doesn’t extend to the fourth inning." I guess math isn't banned on their site!
  19. You must be very young. Back when baseball was men against men instead of tactics against tactics, I wouldn't be surprised if some team went most of a season without a start shorter than 5 innings.
