This front office seems to be working for the long run. I applaud this, though it will be frustrating to those who are anxious for the Twins to win this year. I get the point about the Twins' "window" being open. But if the long-run strategy is successful there will be a succession of windows with one generation of young players transitioning to the next. That's the model they seem to be employing and, although I'm in the minority around here, I agree that it's the best one for the Twins' market position.

Front Page: Alex Avila and the Frame Game

If I never hear the phrase "pitch framing" again it will be too soon. Give me robo-umps now and leave the cheating behind.- 7 replies

Front Page: Minnesota’s Internal First Base Options
PDX Twin replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler is probably too valuable in RF (or CF) to move, but he played a lot of 1B in the minors and would surely be an excellent fielder there, though perhaps not right away. -

Front Page: Minnesota’s Top Regression Candidates
PDX Twin replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But the Twins' (and everyone else's) pitching should be expected to improve with the less lively ball. The Twins were more reliant on power than speed (which is less affected by the ball change), so they will regress more on offense. But I'd expect that Berrios, for example, will be much more effective when hitters can't launch super-balls into orbit without swinging hard. Perhaps Odorizzi, too, if the Twins retain him.- 26 replies

We talk about trading the "surplus" guys to other clubs, but how many other clubs have excess slots on their 40-man rosters to be able to protect them? I realize that the Twins have an above-average farm system, but overall isn't this a bit like having too many chairs and not enough spots at the table?

Front Page: Report: Twins Lose James Rowson to Marlins
PDX Twin replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With continuity among the playing staff, it might be a decent idea to switch hitting/pitching coaches every few years. The hitters have probably learned what Rowson can teach them and maybe a new voice would bring something useful to add to that. I wouldn't say the same about minor-league coaches, where new groups of players cycle through every year, or if the big-league squad was turning over a lot year to year, but this bunch of Twins hitters looks to be stable for the next 2-3 years at least. Let's see if we can hire someone who can build on what Rowson taught them.- 29 replies

I think this is exactly correct. There is currently a transition when some teams have and use better information than others. That won't last long. It's a lot like financial markets in which a new analytical strategy works until everyone else jumps in. Once we reach the new equilibrium, success will be based on getting the unmeasurables right. Examples: (1) finding the guys like Arraez who play way above their projections, (2) getting the clubhouse chemistry right so that each personality makes everyone else work harder and play better, and (3) getting the field chemistry right so that each player is asked to do what he does best (no Sano in RF). It seems like the Twins have had good success this season with the unmeasurables. We'll find out over the next few years if this is good luck or repeatable good judgment.

I have spent a lot of time in the last month thinking about what this Twins team would have been if Joe Mauer had signed for one more season and played at the same level that he did in 2018. I think that Joe would have helped the team massively in two ways: (1) He would have been a steady on-base man ahead of the homerun hitters and (2) he would have saved a dozen or more throwing errors in the infield (plus saving a dozen hits at first). Joe probably would have provided fewer HRs than Cron, though with the live ball he might well have hit 15-20). But this team had plenty of HRs elsewhere. What they lacked was better on-base skills and infield defense. Joe would have helped with both of those.

I'd part with Rosario in a trade if they could replace him with a high-OBP guy that has some speed. They have all the power that they need, even if the baseball comes back to earth next year and homeruns are down. What they need is one more guy like Arraez getting on base regularly so that the solo homers become 2-run homers. And having a guy who is a threat to run forces mistakes from the pitcher and defense. With Buxton out we had exactly zero of those down the stretch.

I didn't watch a minute of the series, partially due to travel and other conflicts. But I simply don't like post-season baseball and I'm not sure I would have watched anyway. It's like running a marathon and then having a series of 100-yard dashes among the top 10 finishers to decide the winner. And, really, the only question in my mind going in against the Yankees was what the scores would be in the three losses. Thanks to the Twins (and TD) for six months of pleasure and success---more than any of us would have expected in March. They finished 3rd in a league of 15. They have a young core that should get better in the next few seasons. They have enough salary space to add key pieces. They have one of the best minor-league systems in baseball that has produced key players like Garver, Arraez, and Polanco from modest investments in signing bonuses and draft positions. Don't let a week of disappointment ruin a summer of fun! There's a lot to which to look forward! I'm anxious to find out if Graterol can be our ace in the next couple of years. I'm anxious to see what Arraez does with a full season. I'm anxious to see if Sano can finally convince me to root for him again. I'm anxious to see what Buxton can do if he can stay healthy for a full season. Go Twins!

Turner always seemed to be the elite defender at a crucially important position. But a career OPS of .426 is just not something that can be in your lineup even if you can play all nine positions perfectly at the same time. Garver always had the bat and the arm, but was criticized for his defensive mechanics. Good on the Twins: mechanics are learn-able and Garver is a good student. These are the kinds of good decisions (and good player development) that make champions. No team (except maybe the Astros) gets enough top 5 draft picks to build a team that way. You have to find the players who have the basic skills and character to develop into stars. Go Twins!

This seems about right to me. Tough on Gibson, who has been with the club through all the losing and played a significant role at times this season, but it's hard to see what we get from him in present form.

This really looks like a team staggering into the post-season ... just like the 1987 team that lost, like, its entire last week of games.

This sounds like a reasonable and creative tactic. I'm not confident that ANY of the Twins' pitchers can do the job against New York or Houston, but this seems to me to give us a higher probability of success than any other scenario.

I guess that Berrios and Rogers have to be taken off the post-season roster now after that performance.
