  1. Doesn't this seem like something that should have been taken care of in November or December?
  2. Word Police (powered by Google): "Despisement" is indeed a word, though an awkward one. "Hatred" and "loathing" seem simpler. The plural of "nemesis" is "nemeses."
  3. Others have described Arraez as simply "a ballplayer." I couldn't agree more. In addition to being a hitting machine, he does the little things well most of the time and makes the occasional unexpected play. It seems like he doesn't have the most talent on the field in terms of speed, throwing arm, strength, etc., but he uses what he has at maximum efficiency to be a very good major-league player. We need a few of those sprinkled in with the (often underachieving) uber-talents!
  4. Kind of. I remember that back when I was (incompetently) coaching my son's Junior Baseball team, all the (present) players on the roster hit in turn, even if there were 15. The most difficult game we ever played was against a team that had only 6-7 players. All of them were great hitters so we almost never got outs, and we couldn't put the ball in play against their pitcher so it didn't matter that they were short in the field. Ugggh! Depressing just to think about it!
  5. Does this mean that Garver's homers count for the Yankees?
  6. Every time I see the ball drop in front of a CF, I think "Buxton would have had that ... and then been out of the lineup for a month."
  7. Pitch enough innings to need a day off.
  8. Walk-off === lead that the bullpen cannot blow.
  9. Predicted final score: Oakland 8, Minnesota 6. I think both teams know what's coming, too.
  10. Expectations. Buxton still gets the same treatment. Rosario did when he was swinging at everything. These are players that have been expected to be stars for years. We have been told that they are capable of being outstanding hitters. When they fail, it's only natural for everyone to offer opinions about the reasons. Adrianza? Castro? Nobody really expects them to hit, so none of us is surprised when they fail. Kepler and Polanco get some flak when they go into a slump, but this year they have been fairly consistent.
  11. At himself for watching strike three?
  12. There are plenty of other reasons to hate the Yankees.
  13. I've disliked the Athletics since the 1970s. I moved to the Bay Area for graduate school at the time that Charlie Finley's A's were winning all their championships. I not only had to endure the misery of that awful stadium, but the Twins routinely lost to Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, and company, sending the few hundred A's fans into delirium and driving me to baseball depression.
  14. Not especially, but it's much better than the hippie beards.
  15. Looking at this Oakland team, it reminds me of a bunch of leftovers. Unfortunately for the Twins, sometimes leftovers can be really good, at least until they go bad. Some posters have argued that the Athletics look like a World Series team. I don't see it. I see it as a bunch of overachievers somehow playing ~.500 ball. It's rare (1987) that such teams go on to post-season success. As for the Twins, is it just bad luck that they can't score with the bases loaded or are they really a bunch of chokers? Time will tell, I guess.
  16. He might get another chance in the 10th or 11th.
  17. He's playing with his wife and son tonight, and much of the program is his son's compositions. We'll see how that turns out.
  18. Yup. I'm off to hear Edgar Meyer & family in about 15 minutes. If Rogers pitches the 9th, I might not miss out.
  19. That was my thought. And it might be against a RHP as well.
