  1. Good thing the games in April don't count as much as the games in May-September
  2. I really really want to believe you. I'm not sure that I do though
  3. Only a 49 wRC+ and .567 OPS in his last 525 PA but thank God he has so much positional flexibility (ie; he owns multiple gloves)
  4. Sure... but are they doing that? I'd take a chance on Matt Albers, also cut from the Nats... and hope he is worth something in July as a trade piece.
  5. *I'm not advocating for bringing Nathan here. But the Nationals bullpen is significantly better than the Twins. The Twins should be looking at any and all options to help out there.
  6. I would hate to find out what a player looks like who can't "hit a little" or "play adequate defense" if we're attaching both of those labels to Santana
  7. I understand what a weighted average is. You are missing the point. "virtually the entire lineup was young" is an incorrect statement. 4 of the top 7 most at bats were players 29 or older. Yes, Sano + Kepler got a good amount of at bats and brought down the weighted average. But "weighted average" does not in any way prove your statement that the whole lineup was young correct
  8. Right. But an average is brought down by players like Buxton and Sano who are only 22 or whatever. That doesn't tell you "the lineup was very young overall"... it really is just telling us the average is low because a couple of guys were very young. I'm just nitpicking the statement "virtually the entire lineup was very young last year". It wasn't. Sano, Kepler, Buxton were very young... but half the lineup was 29+
  9. How about Median age? The mean age does not prove your point that "virtually the entire offense was young". Like Mike said, lots of at bats went to older guys. 4 of the top 7 in At Bats were 29 or older (Dozier, Mauer, Nunez, Suzuki) The average simply says that yes, Buxton and Sano are very young
  10. 2016 would have been better giving a washed up Ryan Vogelsong innings? Gotta see what you have in Berrios at some point
  11. Right, for a rebuilding team I would prefer the younger guy
  12. You could replace Berrios with Hughes, Vogelsong or Santiago and the sentence would still be valid
  13. If he wasn't coming off a fairly major injury, I would probably agree with you. My real issue is going to be if its May that is moved to the pen to start the season. For now, if May wins the 5th spot in the rotation, I don't have a huge issue with giving Hughes April to see how he looks as a starter
  14. No - the Twins would owe him that money
  15. IIRC, if they claim him, yes they would take his contract. So he would go unclaimed. But, with his service time I believe he could refuse his assignment and become a free agent
  16. There are $42 million reasons you shouldn't be surprised at Hughes being in the rotation. If it were my decision he'd be the one going to the bullpen, but its not my money...
  17. Buxton has 427 career at bats, he's not a 3rd year player... It's very possible he'll have a very up and down season and still turn into a star in 2018. Pitching is half of the game, so yes, this season does "hinge on the Kinzlers and Hughes of the world"
  18. Yeah, I would hate for the Twins to derail the development of another young left hander by starting him off in a bullpen clean-up for a year or two... (For the record I am totally kidding, and not calling Mejia the next Santana)
  19. I'm not arguing anything. I was presenting a fact
  20. The Division last year was the 2nd worst out of 6. And as Mike said, Chicago has gone into full rebuild mode and KC has gotten worse.
  21. I'm really not sure I understand your argument. You seem to agree its likely they have a bottom 3 rotation, and bottom 3 bullpen in all of baseball... but called out my take that the pitching staff still stinks, and has very little upside. I mean I like back and forth, but I've gotta be honest I wasn't expecting anyone to think me saying the pitching staff stunk was some sort of hot take / way out there prediction. A 6 game improvement based on the pitching staff being somewhat better, still leaves you 9 win shorts of 74.5 fwiw My original point was; if I'm going to bet the over... I need more to go off of than, a historically bad pitching staff is not historically bad (even though it includes basically all of the same pieces). I like Trevor May, I like Jose Berrios... I dont think they are going to make this staff competent enough to win 75+ games
  22. Pretty simple I think; 1) I don't think the defense will be all that impressive, most notably the left side of the IF. 2) As for the starting pitchers themselves; I don't think Berrios will bomb out of baseball, He also accounted for only 58 of the hundreds of innings of crappy pitching last year, and is looking slated for AAA to start this season. I would wager heavily that Ervin Santana will not repeat his 2016. I'm big on Trevor May, and hope he is in the rotation - but lets be honest, he's far from a known or expected commodity at this point. I do think Gibson will bounce back to a degree. I don't think Santiago has much (any) upside. I am not sure how anyone could count on anything from Hughes. How is that not a bottom 3 rotation in all of baseball? 3) The bullpen stinks, and while there may be upside in the minors, we've been hearing that for a couple years now and have seen nothing. So color me skeptical. What upside is there to make anyone realistically believe that isn't a bottom 3-5 bullpen in all of baseball?
  23. Small Sample size alert. Pre All Star break (6 games) - .471 / .609 / 1.294 26.1% BB 13% K .455 BABIP Post All Star Break through Aug 1 (he sat the next night). .250/ .351 / .396 14% BB 31.6% K .367 BABIP Did he really rake all of July? Post All Star Break through end of season; .200 / .292 / .400 11.7% BB 35.1% K .267 BABIP That's not a guy I want to see getting 500+ Plate appearances this year
  24. I wouldn't bet that either way, but if I did it would be on the under. I see very little to no upside on the pitching staff being much better than last year.
  25. That's fair. It is safe to assume Vargas has the upper hand due to Park being removed from 40man. What I should have said is, I think there's a decent chance Vargas is not any good, so I hope Park is greatly improved coming off his wrist injury and 1st taste at the Majors.
