  1. A plan is nice, but sometimes the situation dictates you adjust. And by moving Lee to third and trying to play Gray at short, it is time to adjust.
  2. So is the solution never bring anyone up from St. Paul again. Keep playing AAAA players and past their prime vets like Bell and Caratini. At some point you have to promote if the players are earning and there are a few that are earning a shot based on what is in front of them.
  3. Of course you would find a way to blame Lewis when Gray makes an 8th grade mistake.
  4. Culpepper with a single, triple, two RBI's and a stolen base. But hey we get Tristan Gray, that is why we buy tickets.
  5. Is Zoll even awake or anyone in the Twins offices. Culpepper needs to be pulled from the game now and put on a plane. I know there are question marks about some of the other players we would like to see up here, but what are you going to lose. Trying to fit Clemens into your lineup batting third, that has us 8 games below .500, Let's do something to show that we have a plan and are serious about trying to develop a winning team.
  6. I have tickets for tomorrow's game, boy am I excited.
  7. That was because he had plenty of time, thanks to Gray playing football. He needs to be pulled from the game and sat down. There needs to be accountability, He was just wandering out there, not really going anywhere.
  8. Send Gray down, he is not a major league player, that is a little league play he just made.
  9. I wasn't considering Mendez on the roster with my comment. You are correct there probably isn't room for both at this point. I would prefer Sabato first just to see if he has something to offer, this is probably the last chance for him with the Twins. But I wouldn't be if it was Mendez over him. Just get Bell off this roster.
  10. Yes you are right, Tommy wakes up one day and throws a dart at the dartboard and says yep that is the payroll for next year.
  11. Yes, Falvey was just a passive bystander thru the whole process. In no business does ownership dictate day to day needs, they are presented with options or they give parameters to operate in. I know you hate the Pohlads and I not a huge fan, but Falvey has decimated this organization and until we get a real baseball executive in here, nothing is going to change. That is where I hold the Pohlads, get somebody in here who knows how to run a baseball team.
  12. Who proposed the budget for approval, hint it was Falvey. Did he think he would have a $160m payroll for the next six years, if so that was the risk he was taking. Ownership approves the budget that Falvey asks for and says he needs to meet the objectives set by ownership. I am not sure how you know the payroll was cut for non baseball reasons. They lost $50m in tv revenue or somewhere in that neighborhood, that is baseball related. Even if it is not under his control, he needs to be aware of these situations so he can plan appropriately. He can't operate in a bubble as PBO, no business runs that way, I am not sure if you understand that. Yes he may not have had a reason to expect such a deep cut in payroll so quickly, again what was their highest payroll before that year. You have to understand historical trends and take into consideration how those will impact future events as well. He chose to take the risk that either payroll would be stable or rise because his baseball development staff has been an absolute failure. If I had been in his position I would have allocated those dollars more conservatively on multiple players because one player isn't going to win by themselves in baseball, just ask the Angels and Trout.
  13. Never said it was done without ownership approval. But he was the one advocating and put the plan together for the larger payroll. There were other options or be prepared because history would say the payroll has never been that high for this team, what made him think it was sustainable.
  14. I didn't say it was for baseball reasons, but the PBO can't be blind to how the team is doing financially. He needed to understand that the bottom line was not improving and was probably suffering from an ownership standpoint. We can debate all day about if that is true or not but will never know because the books won't be shared. Based on that he needs to be prepared to make the necessary adjustments, you don't wait until dad tells you can't spend money. A business doesn't give 50% raises to employees if there is not sufficient revenue support it. And likewise if revenues drop or expenses rise without a corresponding revenue increase, you have to be prepared to adjust your budget. If Falvey doesn't understand this part of the business then he had no business being in a leadership position. He has always tried to have that one big contract, first it was Donaldson, then Correa. Another option was to build the team around known resources based on history.
  15. It is not a frivolous reason to criticize him. Everyone in his position in baseball or any other needs to anticipate based on what is happening inside their organization and within the industry. It was a risk he advocated for and they had minimal success and the team was accumulating debt. He chose to make a big swing and ask for record payrolls from ownership, you better produce more than he did. He could have taken a more conservative approach like other teams that we should be patterning ourselves after but he didn't. I will grant that ownership meaning Joe P. could have taken a less drastic approach to cutting payroll but they didn't and Falvey needed to understand the environment he was operating in when he chose to swim in the deep end.
  16. They won 87 games and won a wild card series where the games were at home. Just because it was the first playoff win in 20 years doesn't make it a great year. And the debt accumulated was for the team, the President of Operations should know the financial situation and make decisions accordingly. Did he really think payroll would go to $160, 180 or even 200m. When they have never waded in those waters before. Was there going to be enough dollars to fill in the roster around Correa. Falvey was a failure as the President of Baseball Operations not GM as you stated.
  17. Or Falvey took a swing and missed. All this was post Covid, he had to know the team was accumulating debt and to think in that situation payroll was going to grow was naive. He didn't win enough to justify further debt. He could have passed on Correa the second time and built the roster with the known resources that he would have. He wanted to played with the big boys but didn't have the pocketbook behind him to back it up.
  18. Sabato could replace Bell if they are going to insist on a DH spot on the roster. Clemens moves around and starts 3 or 4 times which should be his role. There are AB's for Fedko, have Larnach DH a couple of days a week and Sabato the other days. Then Fedko plays in LF 2 days and can play RF two days for Martin. Plenty of AB's to go around if the manager wants it to happen.
  19. Have you been watching any games, he has been letting the outside pitches go more, yes still needs to continue to improve. But to say he is swinging at everything is just not accurate.
  20. First of all I don't want Tom P. making any decisions on the baseball side of things, that was Falvey's and now Zoll's job. His role is to approve or deny the plan and provide the resources. We don't know that Falvey was in full rebuild mode, if so why were Jeffers, Ryan and Lopez all still here. Falvey didn't leave until right before spring training. He signed Josh Bell on December 19th two days after the announcement about the changes in the front office. That signing shows a sign of trying to compete. And up until that point Falvey was making sure everyone he knew that he didn't know his budget for next year. So if you are rebuilding and don't know your budget why squander limited funds on a signing like Bell if you are in a rebuild. Falvey never bought into the rebuild because he knew he had cover being in a weak division, he could try and straddle the line and sign bargain basement free agents because it was all he needed to be competitive in the division. Where ownership screwed up was not getting their house in order early last fall so that there was clear direction being give to management for the offseason. Zoll needs to present a plan of how to make the Twins competitive and get buy in from ownership. The problem is I don't think Zoll is capable and that again is on Tommy P., he needs a competent baseball executive to provide the direction for this team.
  21. Of that $73m they spent $7m on Bell who is a DH only who is below average at the plate. And another $7m on a backup catcher who is making us wish Vazquez was back. The FO has never done a good job with limited resources but somehow other organizations, Cleveland and Milwaukee can build winning teams without large payrolls. Money isn't always the answer.
  22. Why wait another month, this roster is not working and is not winning games. There is absolutely no reason to wait. We have at least 4 utility players and one DH only player on this roster. The roster needs to be balanced out.
  23. Tom P shouldn't be the one we are hearing from. It should be Zoll, he should be setting the direction for this team and getting sign off from ownership. This is where Tommy messed up in my opinion. I don't want a hands on owner, hire competent people and let them do their job. What I want to hear from him is who Zoll's replacement is. Zoll's plan is no different than Falvey's, tread water with the retreads and pray you back into the playoffs so you can say you are successful. How often do we hear from the Wilf's during the season, seldom, they give overall business updates at strategic times and let the management run the team. The current generation of the Pohlads need to learn from them.
  24. Move on from all 3, raise the floor of the roster. Lee can be the backup SS, Clemens can play third or Lewis when Lee fills in at short.
