    mr. núñez entered late at second base and struck out swinging to end the game in sf. turned a nice double play ... he was a bright spot on a lackluster team. versatile, swift, a little power, ran the bases with abandon. a worthy all-star in my book (it really is a half-season award). anyway, hope he does well, hope the new lefty works out.

    i'm reminded of an iron-ranger college chum who vowed not to go to class until the temp climbed above zero. day after day he waited out an unusually frigid minnesota winter in his apartment -- empty beer cans piled high while cig butts and roaches collected in his giant-sized ashtray. then one day the cold snap subsided and the temp suddenly rose well above freezing. i ran into him outside and assumed he was finally headed back to class. "nah," he said. "this weather is way too nice for that."
