  1. I've put away the hopes of playoffs. To quote Jim Mora - "Playoffs! Playoffs!?". Here is my goal. Finish above the White Sox. Above Detroit would be gravy. Please, please, please don't finish in last place. That's it. No more mention of wildcards or anything silly like that. I really don't see the bullpen being fixed anytime soon. There are other problems too with the rotation. The numbers are not good for 32+ year old pitchers and we've got plenty of them that are there or about to be there. Signing these guys to 4 year contracts is insane. So, I don't see much contribution coming up from Santana, Nolasco, Pelfrey (will we resign him?), or anyone else on the pitching staff that has hit the magic age when the skills take a sharp turn downward. As much as I like Sano, I really like watching Rosario play. He's got some fire. Bummed about Hicks injury. He is a physical specimen. The dude is big and can run really fast. I thought from the first time I saw him in spring training that he was the real deal and was really surprised how he struggled. Glad to see him finally realize his talent. Think about an outfield of Rosario, Buxton, and Hicks. All 3 with speed and great arms. Should be fun down the road.
  2. Perhaps that's where the term "Minnesota nice" comes from.
  3. The only time I remember stealing one from the Yankees was when Kubes hit a grand slam off Mo in the 9th.
  4. Dunno. Starting to wish we had done that to Bird....and Aroid.
  5. For some reason, I can't seem to dislike KC. Might go back to George Brett and Freddy Patek.
  6. Oh, I have enough to go around for them and Detroit.
  7. One of my favorite things about baseball is watching the Yankees get eliminated from the playoffs. Why? It's simple, because of the competitive advantage that a large market team has. They get revenue from the YES network...how much revenue? $375 million. Compare that to the Twins $29 million. Let's say that you were a NASCAR racing team and you had that competitive advantage. Think you wouldn't win? Pick a sport. Pick a business. Pick anything you want. Give me more than 10 times the resources at my disposal and tell me that I don't have an advantage. Yankee fans would argue that those are the rules of baseball. Yep, they are, but that doesn't make it right. That is why I love the day when the Yankees are eliminated from the playoffs every year....all is right in the world on that day.
  8. C'mon Plouffe! Gimme some hope.
  9. Wow! This ump has a difficult strike zone to decypher.
  10. Yep. Understand. But I think the mindset is still that Johan was a rule 5 guy and who knows what other treasures are buried there? I'd be curious to see how many rule 5 guys actually stick around for more than a cup of coffee. It seems like we keep rolling the dice in a losing game.
  11. I think one of the problems is that the Twins keep trying to catch lightning in a bottle...twice. Johan Santana, a 2 time Cy Young winner, was a rule 5 pickup. It seems like each year we try to recreate that success and, in order to do that, we need to use up a bullpen spot. The question is whether that bullpen spot is worth the chance of catching lightning in a bottle again. I think I got my answer last night.
  12. The real problem started with pitchers getting behind hitters. Graham, O'Rourke. Killing themselves by getting behind on every hitter. Graham is getting a lesson in humility here.
  13. Everyone assumes that he is heavily monitored....but he's not. He is subject to 9 random tests thru the year and 3 of those are blood tests. Keep in mind that Arod has never actually tested positive. He knows how to beat the system.
  14. Bringing in the closer in the 8th for Sano...that's pretty high praise for the rook.
  15. Note to Graham. First, don't chirp before you've even thrown a pitch. Second, first pitch slider says I'm scared.
  16. I'm no English teacher, but I'm busting the grammer police. Meaning of Affect and Effect In order to understand the correct situation in which to use the word affect or effect, the first thing one must do is have a clear understanding of what each word means. Affect is a verb. It means to produce a change in or influence something. Effect is a noun that can also be used as a verb. It means a change that occurred. When an "s" is added, "effects" means personal belongings.
  17. Funny listening to Bert and the media talk about why Santana hasn't looked sharp lately...dead arm, time off, no spring training.....no mention of the obvious - no PEDS.
  18. Not feeling the sweep here.
  19. The season is long. It wears on players. It's a grind. I can understand going to see family over a break...Vegas? Not so much. It will be there after the season is over. The Twins are just going to have to bear down and gut it out. At the beginning of the season, I said I just wanted them to be competitive. Competitive baseball is fun to watch. The blowouts make me want to turn it to one of those bachelor reality shows.. Lately, "reality TV" has been more entertaining than reality baseball. At some point, they have to get sick of losing, suck it up, and compete in every game. Right now, they show up expecting to lose.
  20. 44 runs in 4 games. They might want to address the pitching in the offseason...oh wait! They already did that! GAAAAAAAAH!
  21. Anybody know if a team has ever given up 40 runs across 4 games?
  22. Did you watch Buxton's first attempt at every level he has been at so far? He looked overmatched at each level. Give him some time in the show and he will adapt and excel.
  23. Couple of thoughts. 1. Meaningful games in August! If you would have told me that in March, I would have taken it. I said I wanted a team that was competitive. Up to this point, they have been. I've gotten my wish. 2. Tulo. He may look good now, but that contract would have been a disaster for the Twins for the future and the odds of him staying healthy are less than 20 percent. 3. The post AS skid has been against good teams who are playing well. This shows that we aren't quite there yet and we all knew that. So, rather than going all in this year, I'd like to see the Twins play it out, address the needs in the offseason, and continue to give the young guys valuable experience. If we make the playoffs, it's gravy on the icing on the cake.
  24. Happy to see the Royals gobbling up the market. We aren't looking to catch them anyway. Biggest issue is that we have to play them. More concerned with what Toronto (3 games back) is doing. Tulo...not concerned as pitching is their issue. Interesting that Detroit (4.5 games back) is not selling and wondering if that causes the White Sox to hesitate to sell as they are also (4.5 back). In my perfect world, Detroit unloads what they have left from their lousy farm system and then misses out on the playoffs, loses Price in the off season and continues the downward spiral. Let the White Sox spiral downward as well but continue to think that they are in the hunt.
