  1. Ortiz is continuing to tear the cover off the ball, now sporting a .798 OPS with 4 homers and 12 doubles. Still nothing good on the plate discipline front, but it is good to see him hitting with some authority again.
  2. Hicks-Buxton-Rosario and Hicks-Buxton-Arcia are the most likely candidates. Rosario, Plouffe, and Parmelee are the most likely trade baits in the next 12 months.
  3. Brock, the Plouffe point still stands though: they still brought him up as a SS and then a 2B!
  4. What's funny is that his showing in the AFL might have actually made him more attractive as a snatch up candidate for another team (still quite doubtful, unlike Polanco who was merely unlikely to be selected).
  5. I don't know about Rogers. Salcedo, on the other hand, could be a pretty dominant reliever. And it is amazing that this guy is still this young. Kepler is slowly coming around. I do kinda worry about stagnation for a full year once he hits AA.
  6. Sending Hicks down and watching no-future Sam Fuld play CF would be a mistake. This is pretty clear.
  7. I am ignorant about something here. What is this "two times a month" stuff about scouting? I mean it is the 21st century. Install cameras all over and pay people to analyze film. I do not trust the minor league system, to some extent, in evaluation and how they often play some of these players in ways that seem dismissive of what would be in the best interest of the Twins (for instance, not giving prospects the most plate appearances by stacking them in the lineup). Also, this Hicks defense is puzzling and the Plouffe-at-short thing is atrocious.
  8. Also, I do think that Eduardo Escobar is the best tradeable asset outside of Suzuki and maybe Fien and Duensing at the deadline. James Beresford looks like a legit candidate for the IF Util role in 2015.
  9. Anyway, the Twins must trade Suzuki at or near the deadline. Extending seems ridiculous. Fryer is a player with fewer possibilities than Herrmann. Matt Koch is the next guy deserving of a chance. He should move to AAA. Pinto-Herrmann-Rohlfing-Koch provides the Twins with possibilities, especially if Suzuki being traded means some kind of good prospect.
  10. Santana would be the odd guy out, rightfully, in a Mastro situation. That Bartlett thing is so, so, so atrocious in every way. But the Twins are 23-21 right now.
  11. Regarding Hughes: I know I made note of it earlier, but there might be something to the Christian-ness of Hughes and Gibson (and now, we know, Dozier) that also might contribute to something here. Not in a weird way, but in a community way for these players to feel more comfortable in their surroundings. I do not want to get into a crazy discussion here and this comment feels ironic to me, but I just mean that being in such a situation might be impactful.
  12. Absolutely. That deal actually made me retroactively not hate the Nolasco deal nearly as much because they ended up with a total dollar amount for those two that was pretty good. I still don't understand the 4th year for Nolasco, and even Jimenez might prove better, but the Hughes signing was important. Nolasco might be forced into the 4th spot because of some combo of Meyer, May, and Gibson (so maybe even the fifth!) and that will still be fine given the cheapness of those three.
  13. Given the somewhat peculiar nature of Hicks' progression (slow at each level, but always "getting it" a second time around), this whole conversation seems a bit odd. The Twins just did something wrong last year by starting him out of the gate and out of the gate as the leadoff hitter, when he had not touched AAA at all. He needed time in AAA last year. I do think that he might have about the same MLB stats this year whether or not he was in AAA last year (given his learning curve), but if he hadn't been up in the show last year, people would be way more forgiving of his 2014 output right now. That output is not terrible if you actually understand the entirety of his time in the minors. Right now, he just isn't hitting and slugging. That would be expected from the guy in his first year in the bigs given his history. It will come around. He is going to start driving the ball soon. I guarantee that. This will change the OPS without affecting, too much his OBP in the process. That said, two things: 1. The defense is sometimes weird to watch. We were basically assuming MLB-ready defense since he was in A ball. What? 2. Paging Parker: is there something different in his swing from last year to this year that might help explain the drop in slugging?
  14. Hicks-Buxton-Rosario and Hicks-Buxton-Arcia are both good options in the future and hopefully that future arrives at some point in 2015.
  15. Nunez is the kind of guy that would make sense back in the 14 position player days as merely a good bat to use to pinch hit and then replace with a defensive infielder. Right now, his ability to play LF is helping him. Santana getting better defensively at short is pretty vital for the future of this team. Of the minor league middle infielders vying for SS, he is the one who seems to be missing only some strictly fielding prowess but has the range and the arm. Beresford has the fielding prowess but is lacking some range and some arm. Polanco has the range but lacks some fielding prowess and some arm. I don't know enough about Aderlin Mejia's defense (and he an adoptee of mine!) to make a similar judgment.
  16. Vargas is on the 40-man, but I would be silly to bring him up just for an at bat per game for 6 games or whatever.
  17. Herrmann went and hit well for Rochester. I don't think the book should just be closed on him. And we know the situation . . . Pinto or Suzuki will be used to pinch hit for the pitcher.
  18. There is no rational justification for extending Kurt Suzuki. This hitting tear he is on will not last.
  19. Kubel and his .345 OPS vs. Felix . . .
  20. That's interesting. It would certainly challenge one's materialist worldview, though perhaps leaves one's atheism untouched?
  21. Dozier is your only realistic prediction here. The other three are going to have trouble getting to double digits because of various reasons.
  22. How would we ever know if this ridiculous public display is what caused Hicks to start performing better. This that walk-off single might have had just as much if not more influence.
  23. Indeed. Ownership that cared about baseball wouldn't tolerate continued jabberings from the front office like this. To think . . . this guy is going to be the real GM whenever TR actually resigns.
